Book nooks are, arguably, the best nooks. Lindsay Cisewski of Style and Dwell, her husband, and her 4-year-old would agree. “We wanted a space to organize all of our books, and have an out-of-the way and cozy space to read them,” Lindsay writes. The target? An unused basement closet. “Due to its location and layout, it really wasn’t functional, and it definitely wasn’t pretty!” Lindsay says.
With so many of my BIG KIDS struggling with fluency, I worked to make it a part of my daily work with students, a Tier 1 intervention that the majority of the class could benefit from. Reading fluency incorporates three main components: speed, accuracy, and prosody, which directly impact comprehension. While I have shared a great deal about incorporating 6-Minute Solutions, here are a few other ways I worked to make fluency fun for my 6th graders.

I'm sorry to say that this is my last mouse book by Ellen Stoll Walsh for now. However, I saw she has newer book, Balancing Act. In Mouse Shapes, the mice play with 2D shapes while hiding from a cat. In the end, the mice build big mice to scare the cat away. We sing with Mr. Harry's Kindergarten. This lesson came from Illuminations. Have students illustrate the poem. Then we add it to our Songs and Poems book. We do lots with pattern blocks. Here's a graphing activity. We use dice to play Roll A Mouse. You can precut the pieces or have the students draw the parts as they play. Don't forget to check out the Mouse Shapes game on Teachers Pay Teachers. ENJOY!

I have updated this link with a freebie! Click here to get there. "No, David" is one of our favorite books to begin the year or use anytime we need a little review of what our classroom expectations are. One corner of our classroom is devoted to David and our school rules. We read the book several times then the students chose one rule they thought was especially important to them and they typed their rule during Computer Lab time. Then each student created a picture of David and they turned out AMAZING! We had so much fun with David this year that we decided to use iMovie to create a short video of David following the rules and showed the video to the entire school. How FUN! If you would like to view the video you can see it on my classroom webpage. The poster shown above was printed at Staples. I used PhotoShop to edit the title to fit our lesson and class.
