There is so much to learn from this parable! Today's lesson is a parable that Jesus told the people. A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. Scripture: Luke 15:11-32 There was a man that had 2 sons. The younger son told his father that he wanted his part of the inheritance and the father divided what he had and gave part to the son. A couple days later, the younger son packed up his belongings and traveled to a country far away. And he wasted what he had with extravagant living. He partied, spent time with women and wasted his money. After he had spent all the money that his father had given him, a severe famine came to the land. This means there was a food shortage, and now he doesn’t have money or food to take care of himself. He went to work for someone in that country and he was sent into the fields to feed the pigs. He was so hungry, he would have gladly eaten the pig's food, but no one gave him any food. He thought to himself…My father has servants, and they have bread to spare, and here I am hungry! He decided he would go home to his father and tell him: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.” I’m not even worthy to be called your son! Make me one of your servants. He made the journey back to his father. When he was far away, his father saw him and had sympathy for him. His father ran and kissed him! He told his father that he has sinned and “I’m not worthy to be called your son.” BUT the father told his servants to bring out the best robe and put it on him…put a ring on his hand…and sandals on his feet. He told them to bring the fatted calf and let us eat and be happy! My son was dead and now he is alive! He was lost and now he is found! The older son was in the field and as he came to the house, heard the music and asked a servant what was going on. He told him that his brother has returned home. He is safe and sound and your father is having a celebration. Well, he was angry, and he wouldn’t go in the house. His father came out to see him and pleaded with him. He told his father that he has stayed home and helped him, and his father hasn’t ever had a celebration for him and his friends! But as soon as my brother comes back, who has wasted all his money, now you serve a great meal for him. His father told him that yes, he was always there for him, and everything that he had, would be his. But it is right to be happy, because his brother was dead, and is now alive. He was lost and now he is found. In this parable, Jesus is telling us that when we are sinners and are doing things with our money and friends that God doesn’t like it's like we have left Him, like the son that left home. We are lost, but when you decide to change your life, you go back to the Father, who is God in heaven. You ask for forgiveness of what you did wrong. God is always happy when we come back to Him! Jesus loves us, and He will welcome us just like the son was welcomed back home by his father. I covered Ken up with brown fabric, painted 'dirt' on him, and then cut the fabric edges to look ragged. I almost always have something on the table for the students to pick up when they come into the class. It can be the project for the lesson, or a take home item that I can work into the lesson. Today, there are pigs and money bags. The dirty white pigs were at Dollar Tree last year, I haven't seen them again... I have been looking! The pink pigs are banks and I found them at Target Dollar Spot. The money bags are really cheap on eBay, the coins are at Party City. Updated links: I have pigs for a handout for the prodigal son. This continues our series learning about Jesus. This is week 11 in the fourth quarter of a year of Preschool Bible Study that I assist with on Wednesday evening. This lesson is about the Prodigal Son and is so fun for the kids! Jesus told stories to help the people understand more about Him and heaven. We are going to learn about a story He told called a parable. This lesson is found in Luke 15:11-32. Jesus began the parable about a man that had 2 sons. The youngest son said he wanted his part of his father’s money now. The father divided what he had and gave part to the son. A couple days later, the younger son packed his things and traveled to a country far away. The son wasted the money his father had given him! He didn’t think about the future. He just spent all the money having fun. But then a very bad famine came to the land. This means there wasn’t enough food, and he doesn’t have money or food to take care of himself. The only work he could find was feeding the pigs in a field. He was so hungry! He would have eaten the pig’s food! But, but no one gave him any food. He thought to himself 'My father has servants, and they have extra bread. Why should I stay here and be hungry?' He decided to leave the country and go back home to his father. When he was far away, his father saw him and felt sorry for him. His father ran and kissed him! He told his father “I was wrong”. His father was so happy to have him back home, he told his servants to bring out the best robe and put it on his son. Put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. He told them to let us eat and be happy! My son was lost and now he is found! God is so happy when people worship Him and are faithful to Him. (Depending on time and listening abilities of your students, the preschool lesson can stop here.) Let’s talk about how the older brother acted when he learned about his brother returning home. The older son was in the field. As he came to the house, heard music and he asked a servant what was going on. The servant told him that his younger brother had returned home, and your father is having a celebration. Well, he was angry. And he wouldn’t go in the house. His father came out to see him and beg him to celebrate. He told his father that “I have stayed home and helped you. You haven’t had a celebration for me and my friends! But as soon as my brother comes back, who has wasted all his money, you serve a big meal for him. His father told him, “Yes, you stayed here with me. But it is right to be happy, because your brother was lost and now, he is found. “ In this parable, Jesus is telling us that God is sad when we are not faithful to Him. He is so happy when obey Him. Jesus loves us! How did the older brother act when he heard about his brother being home? How did he feel about the celebration for his brother? God doesn’t like it when we are jealous. The older brother acted mean to his brother, and he wasn’t nice to his father either. I found one verse for this song here and have permission to adapt and share it here since the author is unknown. Let me know if you are the author. The kids loved this! It is easy for them to learn. Click here to download it. This is a one-page print, fold and use booklet. Super easy and perfect for review. Add a cup of the piggy food and let the kids pretend to feed their pig. You can find piggy banks here also. I had these from VBS (It would be real easy to make some from poster board) and I leaned them up on a wall and put green felt on the floor. Today we talked about the Parable of the Lost Sheep. We watched these videos: Bible Story: Parable of Lost Sheep Parable of the Lost Sheep (computer animated clip) Lego Parable of the Lost Sheep I hid sheep around the room so they could practice being a shepherd looking for their lost sheep. They did that many times taking turns who lost the sheep and who found them again. You can find this and other ideas here. I read this story from The Friend Magazine called "You Found Me, Bishop!" It is a story about President Monson as a bishop gathering a lost sheep. We discussed ways we can be a friend at church and at school to everyone and also ways we could make people feel welcome and wanted at church. We made some edible sheep. We used pretzels for the legs and marshmallows for the body, head, tail, and ears. We attached them by using pretzels, you could also use toothpicks. Here's a close up of my youngest's sheep. They had fun making and eating these little guys. We made this cute sheep craft as well. This week's parable is the Good Samaritan. There is a foldable for the review project. The kids will love it! It is fun and easy, but you can discuss so many different neighbor things and make it work for several Bible lessons. For today's visual, I set up an area with a cave, grass, rocks, path, etc. I added the animal and Good Samaritan. I added brown paint for dirt and red paint for blood for my traveling man. We are learning about Jesus and His ministry. The last couple of weeks we have talked about parables. A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning that Jesus taught. The lesson is found in Luke 10:25-37. A lawyer came to Jesus with a question. He wanted to test Jesus and asked Him “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 10:25) Jesus asked him what is written in the law? How do you read it? The lawyer answered with: {Luke 10:27} “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and your neighbor as yourself. Jesus told the lawyer he was right. And the lawyer wanted to know who is our neighbor? Jesus answers with another parable, the parable of the good Samaritan. (Luke 10:30.) A man went from Jerusalem to Jericho. It was a dangerous road and thieves loved it because there were a lot of hiding places, like caves, for them. The road was full of curves. The area was called Adummim (a-dum'-im) or the pass of blood. It was scary. It was treacherous. The people could understand what Jesus was telling them. Some robbers attacked the traveling man. They took his clothes, hurt him and left. He was barely alive! A priest walked by. During the time of Jesus, a priest took care of the temple sacrifices. You’d think a priest would stop to help, but when he saw the man lying there, the priest went to the other side of the road and passed by him. Next, a Levite came by. A Levite’s job was to help take care of the temple. When the Levite looked at the injured man, he passed by on the other side too. [there were 12,000 priests back then] But then, a Samaritan man was walking by, and he saw the injured man. Jesus is telling this parable to a Jewish lawyer, and Jews and Samaritans did not like each other…at all. So, to expect the Samaritan to help the man would be extra hard, but the Samaritan had compassion for the hurt man. The Samaritan treated his wounds. He used wine to disinfect the cuts and oil to help ease the pain. The Samaritan put the injured man on his own animal, possibly a donkey (Jesus isn't specific in His parable) and took him to an inn. The Samaritan took care of him there. The next day when the Samaritan was leaving, he took two denarii (de-nar'-ee) (The Roman coins they used) and gave them to the innkeeper. The Samaritan man told the innkeeper to take care of the man and said: "When I come again, I will repay you the rest." Jesus asked the lawyer who he thought was the neighbor, and the lawyer said the one who showed mercy. Remember, the lawyer didn’t like Samaritans and couldn’t even say the word, Samaritan! But Jesus told him to “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:37 According to Jesus we are love our neighbors, but strangers also. Jesus also wants us to be nice and help others when we can. Since the man in the parable was a Samaritan, and he was a good man because he helped the hurt traveler, we call this parable the 'Good Samaritan parable'. This is an updated worksheet from an older cut and glue worksheet. I wanted something to add kids’ stickers to and less ink to print. You can purchase any children (or any people) stickers to use. I used these. Or, you can have the students write assorted ideas about treating others like God expects us to as you discuss “Who is our neighbor?” on the open edges of the paper. Or, add heart stickers with things like love others, love God, obey parents, etc. Click here to download the worksheet in color and black & white. I created this foldable for today's less as a conversation starter. I say that a lot, don't I? But I like a fun, quick, easy way to review and let the kids think about how to apply the Bible lesson to their life. This needs cut out (on the solid lines, and folded (on the dotted lines). Directions: Cut around the outside on the solid line. Follow the solid line cutting on the left side of the 'consideration' section. Follow the solid line cutting the inside of the shape out. Where it says 'consideration' (under that it says page 1), fold that backward on the dotted line. You or the students will glue 'How can we help our neighbor' title to the back side of the 'consideration' page to create the front cover. Continue folding accordion style on the dotted lines as seen in the bottom right photo until all parts are folded. On the back of the last page, you or the student will glue the 'Sharing is Caring' circle. They love fun stuff like this! It will fold up and fit in their hands, but when it is spread out, it is a heart! There is a picture and the next section has lines for what they can do to be a neighbor. This can be used for a lot of lessons! It is also available in color or black & white! Click here to print it Click here to print the worksheet.
