#stampinup I've got the most wonderful hairdresser. She gets my color just right and she always gives me a good blow-out so that my hair is straight for a week. And she's so fun! We just chat and chat while she's taking care of me. Well, after my last appointment, I got home and realized I'd forgotten to tip her. Ugh. I couldn't believe it! Then I thought of one of the cute sentiments in the "Pun Intended" host set would make a cute card that I could send her to apologize for my forgetfulness and enclose a check for the tip I'd forgotten. For this card, I cut a sheet of Real Red card stock lengthwise. I added a Basic Black panel. Then I cut a Basic Black and Very Vanilla piece of Playful Palette Designer Series Paper just a bit smaller than the Basic Black panel and added it to the card. Finally, I cut a piece of Very Vanilla Card Stock so that it would layer nicely on the card. I stamped the light in Real Red and the "Sorry, I'm Not Too Bright" sentiment in Basic Black Archival Ink. So cute! I especially like that the filiment in the light spells out "love" because I really do love my hairdresser!!

#stampinup #faithfulinkspirations Have you seen the Gorgeous Posies Project Kit on page 8 of the Annual Catalog? If not, you should take a look at it right now! You can click on the catalog link over there on the right side of my blog. In the meantime, take a gander at this gorgeousness! The "Gorgeous Posies" stamp set is really lovely as well--you can, of course, use it to make the cards in this kit, but you can also make your own cards. Today's card is an "out of the [kit] box" card and it's super pretty! I started with a 3-3/4" by 5" Whisper White Card Stock panel. I stamped the posy from the "Gorgeous Posies" set onto the panel in Heather Highland Ink--some images are full strength, some are the second generation (stamped without reinking the stamp). I stamped the centers of the flowers in Night of Navy--again some are full strength and some are second generation. I adhered this panel to a 4" by 5-1/4" Night of Navy Card Stock mat and then onto a Purple Posy Card Stock card base. Next, I stamped a sentiment from the same set in Night of Navy Ink onto Whisper White Card Stock and cut it out with one of the Stitched So Sweetly Dies. I adhered this to the card with Stampin' Dimensionals. To finish the card, I tied a bow of 1/4" Whisper White Crinkled Seam Binding Ribbon and adhered it to the card with a Mini Glue Dot. I punched a flower with the Small Bloom Punch from Purple Posy Card Stock and adhered it to the card with a Stampin' Dimensional and then I plopped a Basic Rhinestone into the center. If you'd like to gather some friends to put together the "Gorgeous Posies" Project Kit--over Zoom--just let me know. I'll pull all the details, including price, together and we can make it a date! Grungy Goodness Welcome to the Scraps of Darkness Blog!!! I'm Kathy Mosher and am sharing another fun layout (lo) using the  March Kit "Boys Will Be Boys" I am featuring my son Patrick in this lo, isn't he a handsome young man?? I wanted to create a masculine, Clean and Simple (CAS), layout with the focus on texture and not embellishments and since I made the layout for him, and that's what he likes!!! The "Chesterville" papers from Blue Fern Studios (BFS) that come in the Main Kit are just the ticket for this type of layout. I used 2 sheets for the background and added some leftover pieces from from Kaisercraft's "Junkyard" collection in a previous kit. This rust color is Pat's favorite. I used black modeling paste and a stencil from Dylusions to create a cool textured arrangement around the photo. Using black on a background can be a little scary, it doesn't come off very well if you don't like it. I did some paint splatters in black and Prima's "Gilded" Bloom spray. I got a new honeycomb die from Memory Box that I thought would work really well to add more texture. I used the Bo Bunny paper in the Coordinating Paper Add On. It gives just enough color. Love that die, and think I will probably be using it more on future layouts. Pat is a Mechanical Engineer, so the chipboard gears and cogs are the perfect embellishment. I have been to trying different ways to create a rusted effect, so I used the Rust Paste from Prima. Wow!! So cool!!! I used it on all the chipboard, which came in previous kits, as well as my stash. All of the sentiments, but the title, are diecuts from previous kits that I have been saving for the perfect layout. That's the beauty of subscribing to our kits, you always have lots of leftovers to use on future projects. You should see my stash of goodies! Finally, I used chipboard for my title. I embossed it with white powder to add a finishing touch. Even though there are no flowers or many layers, I like this layout focused on texture. To me, it symbolizes all the variations of life! This is my son, Patrick at the top of the mountain. He is a member of the National Ski Patrol on Mt. Alyeska, so he is out saving people when they crash and burn. In this photo he is in the "ski shack", which I understand is about ready to fall down the mountain it is so rickety. Once again I wanted the layout to be about texture, not embellishments. I started by using the Blue Fern Studios "Chesterfield" papers for the background. I stenciled, stamped, and splattered lots around the page. The best part about being a Scraps of Darkness kit club member is that you accumulate lots of leftovers that can be used for other kits. That's what I did for this layout. With the exception of the chipboard, all the sentiments, papers, tags, etc., are from older kits. It's so much fun to use up your scraps. The corrugated colored cardboard that is running across the middle I purchased at least 8 years ago. I fussy cut the zig-zag paper to emulate mountains. I used my favorite new die from Memory Box along the top to add texture. I used Lindy's Ink to paint the triangle chipboard (from my stash). I wanted them to look like mountains. I used little wooden triangles to break up the color and texture. The chipboard title on the photo came from my stash. And, to add frosting to the cake, I added cheesecloth around the top and bottom of the photo to look like clouds and snow. I thought you would like to see a photo showing all the layers from the side. Tip of the Day: If you cut your cheesecloth on the bias (sideways, not straight across the grain) it will fray more and give you a wonderful stringy look. Thanks for stopping by today! Hope to see you real soon! Kathy
I made this dress for Maressa to wear to her Christmas preschool performance and party today. I used to make cute things for the girls to wear for every single holiday occasion. I've gotten lazy. And honestly, Kalla is almost 8.5 and kinda past the cutsie holiday wear (however I did promise an applique tree shirt for her party this Friday) and Maressa gets all the tons of hand-me-downs from holiday past. This year I made Maressa a new dress to match her personality. Nothing fancy. Just used a plain white tee from her closet and let her pick some fabrics from my old stash. Sorry there is not a full tutorial on this particular dress. For those who want to know how to make your own twirly 3-tier dress of your own, I can guide you through the process. First start here for a regular t-dress tutorial. To make it with twirly tiers, instead of one big skirt piece you'll need to cut 3 pieces. This can be all the same fabric or different ones. You'll want to make the 3 pieces to add up to the length of dress you want. For example, Maressa generally wears a 5/6 size store dress (I like them plenty long). I made her 3 pieces with the length of 7" 8" and 7". You'll need to account for .5" on each edge for attaching to the other fabrics, bottom hem and to the shirt. For this dress, I did the top tier the width of the fabric...selvage to selvage. For the next tier I did the width 1.5 times that width and the bottom 1.5 times the width of the middle tier. So if for example your fabric is 40" wide you will need the following strips to make a 5/6 size dress: 7" x 40" 8" x 60" 7" x 90" For the middle and bottom strips you will need to sew together pieces to make the widths. **Adjust lengths to fit different sizes.** To know how long it should be total, I use a dress out of her closet that fits like I want to get my total finished length. Tips: Start from bottom up. Sew your bottom tier strips together, serge/overlock edges, then hem the very bottom. Gather the bottom tier and sew to middle tier. Gather middle tier and sew to top tier. Now gather and sew skirt to t-shirt. Serge or overlock edges as you go. Topstitch tiers once finished for nice look and dress to lay nicely. Now hand to your very happy little girl for much twirling pleasure!

THE LOST SHIP It is just a coincidence that this is the last block. We have made so many half-square triangle blocks! In fact I thought maybe we should have called this the half-square triangle challenge. I wanted to alternate types of blocks so you didn't get weary of the same type of square so I kept saving this block. The Lost Ship reminds me of the Bear Paw Quilt Block. You may have each large triangle a different print, all the same print, or use two prints like I have done. As I laid out the quilt blocks, I realized that I had not used much of the main print from my Avalon collection. You may wish to lay out your blocks and decide which fabrics or colors you need most. I think this would also make a fun patchwork block - each half-square triangle a different print! Cutting Instructions: Cut 10 white/background squares measuring 2 7/8" square Cut 10 print (green) squares measuring 2 7/8" square Cut 2 white background squares measuring 4 7/8" square Cut 2 print (red) squares measuring 4 7/8" square OR 4 large triangles with the the two right angle sides each measuring 4 7/8" Draw a diagonal line on each of the large white/background 4 7/8" square. Match each white/background square to one of the large 4 7/8" print squares with right sides together. Stitch a 1/4" seam away from each pencil line. Stitch down each side. Click on the picture for a better view to see the sewn seam. Cut along the pencil line. Press seams towards the darkest print. OR if you are making each large half-square triangle a different print, then sew each triangle to a white/background triangle using a 1/4" seam along the longest edge, forming a half-square triangle. Press seams towards the print. Large half-square triangles will measure 4 1/2" square. Trim off any excess and the dog ears. Remember to use the 45 degree diagonal lines on your ruler to make sure your squares are 4 1/2" square. The seams should be centered to the ends of the corners. This will give you a more perfect point when you stitch the squares together. Set these four squares aside. LAST TIME! Draw a diagonal line on each of the 2 7/8" white/background squares. Match each white/background square to a print square and sew 1/4" seam away from each pencil line. Just like before! To save time chain stitch these together. Sew along each side. Clip threads separating each square. With ruler and rotary cutter, cut along each drawn pencil line. Press seams towards the print. Trim off dog ears and any excess. Each half-square triangle should be 2 1/2" square. You should have 20. Sew one corner of the block together first. Line up the half-square triangles in this pattern. Sew the two sides together keeping the printed triangles in the same direction. Then sew the three bottom half-square triangles together. Press the seams toward the darkest print. Stitch the half-square triangle strip of two to the side of the large half-square triangle. Press the seam towards the large half-square triangle. Then attach the bottom strip. Wait to press this last seam. Make 3 more blocks like this. Each block should measure 6 1/2" square. Arrange each of the four blocks into the Lost Ship pattern. Sew the two top blocks together, after pressing the bottom row seams in opposite directions. Repeat with the bottom two blocks. Press each of those seams in opposite directions. Then stitch the two strips together pressing the final seam towards the base of the block. Large block should measure 12 1/2" square. True up your block. And last but not least...... THE LOST SHIP QUILT BLOCK Now for the fun Congratulations again to Jeanenne Winner of a $10 gift certificate to Sisters & Quilters! ( Winner picked using the Random Number generator - this week winner number 3) Ansje's Garden Patch Block. Nice block! Can I say those little teapots are so fun in the corner squares. Leisha's Garden Patch Block. Leisha - I liked how you handled the stripe in the tulip portion of the block. So pretty! Jeanenne sent in two blocks this week. First is the Garden Patch with some fun chevrons and stripes. Next is Jeanenne's Pin Wheels. I love the little chevron print in the pinwheels. How fun is this! A great mix white the large floral. Michelle just joined us last week and has sent us several blocks. First is her Garden Patch. Notice how she used prints for the center squares which gives the Garden Patch a new look. Love this! Scroll down through Michelle's next blocks. You will love them. Michelle is using fabrics from Lakehouse Drygoods. Michelle's Basket of Flowers Michelle's Bears Paw Michelle's Yankee Puzzle And here is her All Hallow's Block What a beautiful Blueberry Pie Block! Love the fussy cut rose in the center. Another fun rose in the center. Beautiful Key Lime Pie Block! Thank you Michelle for sending in your pictures. Can't wait to see these all put together. Next week....sashings, corner blocks and borders for the On Point quilt. You can use the same sashing for vertical rows! Leisha is making a quilt with the blocks in vertical rows. She needs 20 blocks total - 4 x 5. She is making some additional blocks that I thought you might like to see. Can you see all the half-square triangles. I am beginning to believe that the half-square triangle can be made into a million patterns. Oh and must apologize. I had a cutting error last week - I omitted 2 squares. I have corrected the post so that anyone new will have the correct cutting instructions. Always let me know if you see an error! Happy Sewing !
#stampinup #faithfulinkspirations I've been sharing the projects I made for the Stampin' Up OnStage display boards and today's card is the last of them. I really loved being a display stamper--it's fun to get new products before the catalog is released and before anyone else even sees them! But it's also a little scary because you're never really sure if your projects are "good enough." Well, I followed my own advice when someone has lost their stampin' mojo--just pick up an ink pad and any set and play around and see what happens. Some of my "see what happens" attempts didn't translate into cards, but I learned something from trying and I ended up with some pretty great projects, if I do say so myself (and I do). Today's card is the last of four I made with the "Hand Delivered" host set. This one is perfect for a wedding or wedding shower. It was easy to align the stamps to make the image because the stamps are photopolymer. Using a Stamparatus would make it even easier! I stamped the image in Memento Tuxedo Black onto a 3-3/4" by 5" Thick Whisper White Card Stock mat. I colored it with a variety of Stampin' Blends: Light Pool Party, Light Rich Razzleberry, Light Old Olive, Light Daffodil Delight, Light Petal Pink, and Ivory. I adhered this to a 3-7/8" by 5-1/8" Basic Black Card Stock mat and then onto a Rich Razzleberry Card Stock card base. I stamped a sentiment from the set in Rich Razzleberry Ink onto a Whisper White scrap. I punched this out with the Classic Label Punch and snipped off the ends with my Paper Snips. I adhered the sentiment to the card with Mini Stampin' Dimensionals. Here's the set of four cards I made for the display board. I was pleased with how they turned out (after a few "see what happens" attempts that ended up in the recycling bag). I really enjoyed being a display stamper and I'd love to do it again--any time!
