He worked with different architects in Holland and in the USA, where he spent two years at Frank Lloyd Wright’s atelier. He carried out important projects in Switzerland and Germany, such as the Budge-Heim house in Frankfurt and the Neubühl Siedlung in Zürich, constructed with the collaboration of Mart Stam and Ferdinand Kramer. After lecturing at Harvard University, he became professor at the Polytechnic High School of Zürich. In 1931 Moser, along with Siegfried Giedon and Rudolf Graber, founded the Wohnbedarf AG Zurich–the collection for which he designed numerous models. less

Karl Moser (10. August 1860 – 28. Februar 1936) ist eine der grossen Figuren, die die moderne Architektur am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts begründet und bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein fortentwickelt haben. Als Professor an der ETH Zürich war er der einflussreiche Mentor einer jungen, nach neuen Wegen suchenden Architektengeneration. Wie Peter Behrens in Deutschland oder Hendrik Petrus Berlage in den Niederlanden wurde Moser in der Schweiz bereits zu Lebzeiten als 'Vater der Moderne' verehrt; die Fachwelt feierte die von 1924 bis 1927 errichtete, über die Grenzen Europas hinaus beachtete Antoniuskirche in Basel als Inkunabel der Sichtbeton-Architektur. Zusammen mit seinem Partner Robert Curjel und Hermann Billing gehörte Karl Moser um 1900 zu den Exponenten der progressiven 'Jung-Karlsruher Schule'. Die 1888 gegründete prosperierende Bürogemeinschaft Curjel & Moser endete 1915 mit Mosers Berufung nach Zürich. Von Beginn seiner Karriere an pflegte Moser den internationalen Austausch. Er war stets einer der Ersten, der die aktuellen Strömungen früh zur Kenntnis nahm und in der eigenen Architektur produktiv verarbeitete. 1928 ehrte die nachfolgende Generation ihren Lehrer und Mitstreiter, indem sie ihn zum Präsidenten der Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne CIAM, dem wichtigsten Netzwerk des modernen Bauens, wählte. Das immense Œuvre Mosers umfasst nahezu 600 Bauten und Projekte sowie sämtliche Gattungen vom Wohnhaus bis zum Siedlungs- und Städtebau. Seine Gebäude prägen nicht nur das Stadtbild von Zürich, wo er unter anderem das Kunsthaus, die Universität und die Kirche Fluntern errichtete, und Karlsruhe – hier konnten Curjel & Moser neben der Christuskirche, der Lutherkirche und zahlreichen Geschäftshäusern an der Kaiserstrasse rund 70 Villen und Wohnhäuser in den Stadterweiterungsgebieten realisieren. Auch in anderen Städten entstanden prominente Gebäude wie die Kantonsschule und das Gewerbemuseum in Aarau, der Badische Bahnhof und die Pauluskirche in Basel, die Garnisonskirche in Wik bei Kiel oder die Nikolaikirche in Frankfurt am Main. Karl Moser zeigte gegenüber Neuerungen in Technik, Konstruktion und Material, aber ebenso in Form und Stil zeitlebens eine undogmatische Aufgeschlossenheit. Dementsprechend spiegeln sich in seinem Gesamtwerk fast fünfzig Jahre Architekturgeschichte. Zum 150. Geburtstag des Architekten präsentiert das Institut gta der ETH Zürich eine zweibändige Monografie. Sie enthält einen Katalog mit 111 ausgewählten Projekten, ein komplettes Werkverzeichnis sowie Aufsätze zu verschiedenen Aspekten seines Schaffens. Die Publikation ist das Resultat eines mehrjährigen ETH-Forschungsprojekts, an dem renommierte Wissenschaftler unterschiedlicher Disziplinen und Architekten beteiligt waren. Mit ihr liegt nun das grundlegende Standardwerk vor, ein Desiderat über Jahrzehnte.
