Karl Richter zeigt am Beispiel der Alterslyrik Goethes, auf wie vielen Wegen seine naturwissenschaftliche Arbeit die Poesie und Poetologie seiner Gedichte mit geprägt hat. Die naturwissenschaftlichen Arbeiten Goethes werden oft als das ganz Andere, womöglich Entbehrliche betrachtet, gerade auch von Freunden seiner Dichtung. Gegen solche Verkürzungen der Rezeption stellt Karl Richter am Beispiel der Alterslyrik Goethes dar, was Poesie und Poetologie dem produktiven Dialog von Dichtung und Naturforschung im Schaffen Goethes verdanken. Naturphänomene, die den Forscher beschäftigen, bilden auch einen zentralen Bereich lyrischer Symbolik. Naturwissenschaftliche Denkbilder - Metamorphose, Polarität und Steigerung, wiederholte Spiegelungen - verwandeln sich in Prinzipien poetischer Strukturierung. Zeitgeschichte wird aus dem weiten Zusammenhang einer alles Leben umschliessenden Naturgeschichte gedeutet. Kunst und Naturbeobachtung wirken in Formen einer lyrischen Katharsis zusammen. Erst seit der Mitte des vorigen Jahrhunderts wird zunehmend erkannt, wie neuartig, ja modern die Alterslyrik Goethes ist. Am Beispiel des »West-östlichen Divan« und Gedichten der Spätzeit Goethes zeigt Karl Richter, wie viel zu ihrer Poesie beigetragen hat, dass Goethe nicht nur Dichter war.

Casi todos los años por estas fechas escucho alguna versión del Oratorio de Navidad. Esta vez ha tocado la segunda de las interpretaciones de Karl Richter, la registrada frente a sus habituales conjuntos bávaros, Coro y Orquesta Bach de Múnich, en la Herkules-Saal muniquesa en febrero, marzo y junio de 1965 para el sello Archiv. La conocía solo muy parcialmente, y lo cierto es que no me terminaba de gustar, quizá por estar en exceso acostumbrado a las maravillosas grabaciones –en audio y vídeo– de John Eliot Gardiner. Ahora le he encontrado grandes valores: hay aquí musicalidad a raudales, mucha comunicatividad y una atención plena a los diferentes valores expresivos de la obra, desde el júbilo no poco profano del increíble coro inicial que J. S. Bach se tomó prestado a sí mismo de su cantata Resonad, Timbales BWV 214 –gran parte de la obra sigue la fórmula de la parodia– hasta la poesía íntima y sensual de no pocos de los números, además de espiritualidad en absoluto naif y mucha intensidad en los corales, que buscan la fuerza y la convicción mucho antes que la mera belleza sonora. Y hay, sobre todo, una clara apuesta por los valores melódicos de la partitura, lo que tiene mucho que ver con el uso del legato y, en general, de la articulación adoptada. Pero aquí está, precisamente, lo que para mí es el problema de la interpretación, no tanto el volumen de las fuerzas congregadas o el uso de instrumentos tradicionales –ya sabe el lector que no soy en absoluto taliban en este sentido– como la excesiva suavidad del fraseo, la falta de incisividad y de un ritmo más marcado. En cualquier caso, cualquier melómano exento de prejuicios –quedan excluidos los papanatas de la cuerda de tripa– disfrutará sobremanera de la dirección de Herr Richter. Como los amantes de las voces se lo pasarán en grande con Gundula Janowitz –un tanto agria en el sobreagudo–, Christa Ludwig, Fritz Wunderlich y Franz Crass, nada menos. Por no hablar del cameo de la trompeta de Maurice André, aunque a mi entender esta cobra excesivo protagonismo en la toma sonora. Esta última ha sido remasterizada en fechas recientes en HD: esta es la versión que he escuchado y la que a ustedes les recomienzo.
