Today I am helping others learn to how to use balm makeup AND giving my opinion of Jones Road Beauty by Bobbi Brown. You need a night cream in your p.m. routine no matter what skin type you have. These are the best nighttime moisturizers for every skin concern and goal.
If you wear foundation and concealer, it's so important to make sure you have the right shades to ensure you're not overpowering or distracting from your natural beauty. When you have the right colors at your side, you can easily create a flawless base. You’ll want to match your skin’s tone as well as undertone when searching for the products that will cover or correct your complexion, namely foundation and concealer. While skin color refers to the amount of melanin in the skin, your skin undertone is the underlying color that is present beneath the skin's surface. (When you hear skin color or skin shade, think skin tone.) Sun exposure or aging can affect skin color, but your skin undertone stays the same. What Is Undertone? Basically, undertones are the shade within your skin color. They can be warm, neutral, or cool. Two people with the same skin tone can have different undertones; they can both have a light skin shade, but one may have cool undertones while the other has warm undertones. Same idea for skin tones: fair skin can have warm undertones, while dark skin can have cool undertones. Choosing the wrong undertone can make your makeup look off, but going with the correct undertone makes all the difference. Cool undertones tend to burn and have a pink, red, or blue tint, while warm undertones have a yellow, peach, or golden tint (this is the type of skin that can tan). Neutral undertones are a mix of cool and warm hues and often change between the two. Knowing what type of undertones you have will help you determine your color palette for both makeup products and clothes. What Determines Skin Undertone? The more melanin you have, the darker your skin shade will be. There are other types of melanin called pheomelanin and eumelanin, and their levels determine your undertone. While your skin shade can change with exposure to sunlight and age, your undertones will remain the same. Pheomelanin produces reddish and yellowish tints that give undertones their warmth. On the other side, eumelanin is bluish and gives undertones a coolness. Neutral undertones have the same amount of pheomelanin and eumelanin. How Do I Find My Skin’s Undertones? When you match your undertones, your foundation is going to blend more seamlessly into the skin and look its most natural. The best way to find out if a color is right for your skin is to test it on the side of our face, not with a swatch on your arm or hand. If the color disappears, perfect. But if you don’t have a product in front of you, there are other ways to find your undertone so you’ll have your selection process down to a science. Look at Your Veins One of the easiest ways to determine your skin’s undertone is to flip your wrist over and look at your veins. If your veins appear blue or purple, you likely have cool undertones. If your veins appear green, you likely have warm undertones. You may not be able to immediately determine the color of your veins—it can be hard to tell if they are blue or green; in that case, you likely have neutral undertones. Skin Reactivity to the Sun Another way to determine your skin undertone is to consider how your skin handles the sun. Do you burn easily? Would you call your complexion pink or rosy? Then you likely have cool undertones. If you tend to tan (and not burn) and have a golden complexion, you likely have warm undertones. As for neutral undertones, if that describes you, then you probably don’t burn easily and your skin has a mix of pink and golden hues. No matter your undertone, remember to wear sunscreen anytime you are out in the sun. (We doubt we need to convince you, but here’s the lowdown on all things sunscreen and sun damage.) Look at Your Jewelry Is there a certain metal that you gravitate toward when you wear jewelry? An easy jewelry test can provide clues about your skin undertone. You likely have cool undertones if you feel you look best in silver jewelry. Same idea for gold jewelry, but in that instance, you probably have warm undertones. And if you like mixing and matching silver and gold because both metals look good on you, you likely have neutral undertones. Consider Your Natural Hair Color If you color your hair, dig out the baby pictures. Your natural hair color can give you clues about your skin undertone. You likely have cooler undertones if you naturally have icy blonde, black, or ashy brown hair. Those who were born with red, auburn, golden blonde, or brown hair probably have warmer undertones. While these hair colors do not strictly define your undertones, they can help you pinpoint if you are cool or warm. White Tee Test Put on a plain, white t-shirt, one that you wear frequently, and stand in front of a mirror in a well-lit room. (You can also grab a piece of blank, white printer paper.) Does your skin look more pinkish or yellowish? Your undertone is probably cool if your skin is more pinkish or rosy, and if your skin appears more yellowish or golden, your undertone may be warm. Consider yourself a neutral undertone if you cannot identify any yellow or pink in comparison to the white shirt or sheet of paper. Makeup for Your Undertone Once you have determined your undertone, you can easily choose the correct makeup and skincare to enhance your features. Having the wrong undertone could cause your complexion to look off—as in, it may look orange or even gray. Foundation If you are unsure of your best foundation shade, take our easy quiz to find the What The Foundation hue—we have 12 colors of WTF—that’ll suit you. Concealer Like foundation, concealer is another product you want to select for your skin shade and undertones. Available in over 25 shades, our Face Pencil easily covers dark spots and corrects discoloration. If you need help picking your concealer shade, we have another quiz to steer you toward the right shade or shades; we recommend keeping a couple on hand. (And this article will also be useful.) Blush Once you’ve selected the right foundation and concealer to suit your undertone, choosing the right blush is just as important for adding color and dimension to your face. Our Best Blush will add a soft, natural flush of color to your complexion. Look for shades with pink or red hues for cool skin tones, like Rosy or Berry. Colors like Sandy or Peachy—with peach or coral hues—are great for warm skin. Lipstick At Jones Road Beauty, we’ve always thought of lip color as a personal style preference, not as something that has to coordinate with your skin tone or undertone. If you want to find your “nude,” choose the shade that most closely matches your natural lip color, but for everything else, we always encourage experimentation, whether you’re opting for The Lip Tint, Cool Gloss, or Lip and Cheek Stick. The Bottom Line Finding your shade and undertones are important factors when choosing your makeup. You also have your skin type, texture, and preferences to consider. But now that you’ve read our helpful tips, our quizzes can help you get started in figuring out the best colors for coverage.
I love the way Molly looks without any makeup — she has impeccable skin and I adore the freckles on her nose. I wanted to keep this look super minimal, it’s something you can do in just five minutes using Jones Road products. Skin I started by applying Jones Road Eye Cream and Miracle Cream to plump up and hydrate her skin. She has some natural darkness under the eyes, so I used a lighter Face Pencil to eliminate that shadow. I added more eye cream and then set it with a little bit of loose powder — the extra eye cream really helped everything blend in. I didn’t want to use a lot of foundation because I love the way her skin looks, so I used a Face Pencil just to even out her tone and cover redness around the nose, mouth, and chin. There’s often redness or darkness at the outer corner of the eyes, so I also applied it there. I like to have 2-3 shades on hand to blend and adjust across diferent areas and seasons. Then I applied Miracle Balm in Bronze all over the face and on the neck. This helps make sure that the face and neck match, which is really important. Bronzer helps to warm up the skin on the neck. I finished with Miracle Balm in Dusty Rose on the cheeks. Eyes & Brows Molly has really expressive eyebrows, which I also love about her. I filled them in using a brow pencil, giving them an arch and making sure they matched each other. The saying is that your eyebrows are “sisters, not twins,” but you still want them to have the same shape. On her lids, I applied a light shadow all over to get rid of any discoloration. Then I used the Miracle Balm in Dusty Rose that is on her cheeks and applied it to the lids — I love a glossy lid, especially in photos. I skipped the liner and added two coats of The Mascara in black. Lips I kept her lips super simple with Cool Gloss in Original. No pencil, no lipstick. A really natural look.

I have always loved the natural pink that cheeks turn after exercising. It’s healthy, fresh, and super pretty. If you ask me, everyone looks good with a little pink on the cheeks, which is why I’m so excited to introduce Flushed, the newest shade of Miracle Balm. Unlike our other shades which can be used all over the skin for dewiness and color correction, Flushed is really about adding color to your complexion. I like to think of it as moisturizer meets a pop of color. Flushed is a warm pink with flecks of gold that instantly brightens, adds luminosity, and gives you that “just pinched” shade of pink. It’s truly a one and done product, adding both color and hydration (thanks to ingredients like jojoba and argan oil) in one go. How to Wear It The thing I really love about this product is that it truly works on all skin tones, from light to dark. I love applying Flushed to the apple of the cheek, but you can also use it on eyelids and lips. (My rules for wearing pink makeup will help you balance where on the face to use it!) Remember: you have to be strategic in where you apply it, or you run the risk of having your skin look too pink. If you have really fair skin, Flushed might not work for you as an all-over color in the same way that Miracle Balm in Dusty Rose or Tawny would. If your Face Pencil shade is low, wear Flushed on lips and cheeks and avoid applying to the forehead and neck. Always start with a small amount and build from there. If you have darker skin (Face Pencil Shade 15 or above), you have a little more flexibility in how you wear Flushed. Try it on eyes, lips, and cheeks or apply it as an all over tint like you might with other shades of Miracle Balm. Product Pairings The other thing I really love about this product is how well it pairs with the other staples in your routine. You can wear Flushed alone, on top of other shades of Miracle Balm (try it with Tawny, Bronze, Sunkissed, or Dusty Rose) or layered over a powder blush or a Lip and Cheek Stick for extra luminosity. I really love how Flushed looks layered on top of Miracle Balm in Sunkissed. It’s already become my go-to product for color and hydration.

Miracle Balm is the Jones Road product I’m most proud of creating—it will seriously change your beauty routine. It’s the hero product in my photoshoot kit and in my personal makeup bag. What I really love about it is how much it instantly transforms skin. It helps to even out foundation, adds dewiness, creates definition, and can give color to cheeks, and lips. The one question I get asked most often about Miracle Balm is: What shade is right for me? There’s no easy answer, because these shades really do work across all skin tones. And since you can wear them everywhere, it’s fun to mix and match different shades. I use all six colors, depending on my mood and the effect I want — and they all look good. Here’s a little guide to help you find the shade (or shades) that are right for you: The Shades Au Naturel Au Naturel is a clear balm. It works on all skin tones and can be used anywhere you want that dewy glow — it really brings your skin to life. Dusty Rose Dusty Rose is a sheer, rosy pink. It’s beautiful on porcelain skin and on women with a little bit of a pink undertone. Try it on the lips or on the cheeks as sheer blush. Also works on warmer skin tones as a blushy pink on the cheeks and lips. Bronze Bronze is golden and adds warmth to the skin. It also helps counteract redness and works super well on freckles and light to deep skin tones. Tawny Tawny, a brownish red, is my go to — especially when I want to look super healthy. It works great on medium to dark skin tones. I really love it on deeper black skin as a highlighter and glow enhancer. Sunkissed Sunkissed, a deep brownish with subtle gold shimmer, will help give skin that summer glow while adding definition. It’s great on medium to deep skin tones. Magic Hour Magic Hour is a diffused highlight with silver shimmer. Super versatile, I love using this shade on lips and cheeks. It’s sheer enough for all skin tones. Disco Inspired by 1970s glamour, this illuminating shade is perfect for anywhere you want shimmer. It's a warm bronze flecked with silver and gold — try it on cheekbones and lips. Going on a beach vacation? We love it on arms and legs, too. Flushed Flushed is a warm pink with flecks of gold that instantly brightens, adds luminosity, and gives you a pop of pink on cheeks and lips. Golden Hour This is my solution to any bad beauty day. Golden Hour is a peachy-golden tint infused with gold sparkle, working to give skin warmth and dimension. It perfectly captures that warm, golden sunset light that makes everyone look good. How to Wear It Miracle Balm does it all. Here are a few ways to use it in your daily routine: On Face & Cheeks I love using Miracle Balm to add natural definition and a subtle wash of color to the face and cheeks. It blends seamlessly onto skin, and you can apply it with your fingertips, palms, a brush or a sponge. Miracle Balm can be layered on top of foundation for an instant refresh or can be worn alone for a dewy glow. Just don’t forget to break the seal! Lips Miracle Balm is made with jojoba seed oil and argan oil, so it is super moisturizing and great on the lips. Bonus: you don’t need a mirror to reapply. Taming Flyaways Yep, Miracle Balm can even help with this.
We don’t think we’re overstating the miraculous potential of our beloved balm. This is our hero product, the basis of our “your skin but better” approach, and it fits into anyone’s routine, whether no-makeup makeup is what they’re after or something a bit more. It’s a super-hydrating pick-me-up, good for adding color or glow, depending on which of the 12 shades you opt for and your own skin tone. It’s perfect for a lit-from-within vitality or a warmed-up complexion—even both. It’s so multifunctional that you can use it on your lips and neck too. Miracle Balm’s formulation is special, unlike anything else out there, and when it comes to its emollient texture, less is more. (Less than less, even. Start with very little.) While it requires no particular expertise to apply and enjoy, anyone who decides to incorporate this masterful product into their makeup look could benefit from a little guidance before (literally) digging in. Let’s go over the ins and outs of all things Miracle Balm. We’ll share some tips on how to choose the best color, how to apply it, and what to do if you use too much. How to Choose a Color Consider what you want to use Miracle Balm for. Do you want to add pigment, highlight, an all-over glow? Here are the shade breakdowns to get you started. Pinched Cheeks: a medium rosy pink with subtle multidimensional shimmer for fair to dark skin tones Cocoa Bronze: a deep plummy bronze for medium to deep skin tones Au Naturel: a clear balm with subtle opal pearl for all skin tones Happy Hour: a cool, sheer pink with silver shimmer for light to medium tan skin tones Dusty Rose: a cool, rosy pink sheer tint for fair to medium skin tones Flushed: a cool pink with a subtle sheen and sheer to buildable coverage for all skin tones Miami Beach: a warm peachy coral with subtle gold shimmer and sheer to buildable coverage for all skin tones Golden Hour: a warm, sheer gold with multidimensional shimmer for all skin tones Magic Hour: a cool, sheer bronze with silver shimmer for light to medium-dark skin Bronze: a warm brown sheer to buildable tint for all skin tones Tawny: a reddish/brown sheer to buildable tint for medium to dark skin tones Sunkissed: a deep reddish bronze tint that is sheer to buildable for light to dark skin tones Even more simply, for those who don’t want shimmer or color, especially if you want to skip foundation: Au Naturel In lieu of blush: Miami Beach, Flushed, or Pinched Cheeks For highlighting: Happy Hour (the coolest option, pinky and silvery), Magic Hour (this is a still-cool option that’s sheer enough for all skin tones, a little bronzey), or Golden Hour (a more gold take) For all-over tint: Sunkissed, Dusty Rose, or Cocoa Bronze If your skin has redness, Bronze is perfect. (Skip if you have yellow undertones; you may find this makes you look orange.) Conversely, Tawny can neutralize yellow undertones and is best avoided for pink or red undertones. Still at a loss? We’ve created a custom quiz to point you in the right direction. If you’re able to visit us in store and test it out in person, it’s best to actually try it on your face—not swatch it out on your hand or arm like you would ordinarily when testing out a makeup color. When you diffuse the intensity on a larger area, like your cheekbones, you’ll get the most accurate picture of its color and highlight. Otherwise, your chosen Miracle Balm may look more dramatic and impactful if you’re applying it to a concentrated area, like your hand or arm, and you’ll be tempted to apply more product to match what you originally intended. How to Apply It When you first open a fresh package, break the seal to activate the color. Use your fingertips and gently dip into the balm, gently digging down to excavate a small amount. (You can see Bobbi demo it here, too.) From there, transfer it to both sets of fingers and lightly rub together to warm, and lightly start dabbing on. Begin at your cheeks, even if you plan on applying all over. Don’t smear or drag. If you like, a brush, like The Everything Brush, can also help seamlessly blend in as well. (See a how-to here.) Your fingers will be perfect for applying to your eyelids or lips, no brush necessary. Quick note: For subsequent applications, either right after to build up to your desired intensity or the next day (or even after), you don’t need to break the seal again, in an untouched part of the balm. You can keep dipping into the portion you’ve already used, and once you need to get more product, move along and break into another part of the intact balm. How Much Miracle Balm Should I Use? You don’t need much Miracle Balm to enjoy its impact, no more than a pea-sized amount for your whole face. When you’re first getting the hang of it, go for an even smaller amount; you can always add more but it’s more of a process to remove the excess. Consider the least amount you could use. Given the consistency and texture of the balm finish, it can build quickly and feel sticky if overdone. That’s why we recommend going slow and starting light. (It’s a powerhouse product but it is meant to lend minimal coverage. The finish will likely feel heavy and greasy if you pile too much on.) Formulated with jojoba seed oil, Miracle Balm is ultra-moisturizing, but if you have dry skin don’t substitute it for a moisturizer. Use sparingly if you have oily skin. Can I Use Miracle Balm on Its Own? Yes! Absolutely. It’s not color-correcting per se but it will make you fresh-faced in an instant. One tip though: Avoid the t-zone. Adding any product there—complexion correctors aside—can bring an unwanted glow; you rarely want to highlight the t-zone as it may make you look oily rather than lit-from-within. If you do want to pair with correction products, here’s a breakdown. For light to medium coverage, apply your Face Pencil(s) first and then Miracle Balm. For medium to full coverage, apply What The Foundation, your Face Pencil(s), and lastly, Miracle Balm. If you’re after more cheek color, apply Lip and Cheek Stick or The Best Blush first before Miracle Balm. (This will ensure you’re adding color without making things greasy.) But for all-over color, go with What The Foundation or your preferred bronzer (gel or powder) before Miracle Balm. What to Do If You Use Too Much Miracle Balm Balms, by nature, can add unwanted weight or texture if too much is applied. So, if your skin is feeling greasy or almost sticky after you’ve put on Miracle Balm, then you’ve likely added too much. Next time, apply even less. If you are using a minimal amount but still find it to be a bit much or tacky to the touch, consider skipping your moisturizer and perhaps even your complexion-correcting products. But say you want to course-correct now, consider mattifying it to take down some of the texture and glow. Simply top with a light dusting of Tinted Face Powder in Untinted. Lastly, Experimentation Encouraged Miracle Balm is truly a magical product but it may take a little bit of trial and error to figure out what exactly works for you and your skin. If you’re noticing an undesirable texture after the first few uses, don’t get discouraged. Simple adjustments to the amount of moisturizer and foundation you’re using may be all it takes to make Miracle Balm work for you. So keep at it until you learn your ideal application amount and methods. We know you’ll be glad you did.
Getting older likely means your skin has changed—and so the products and routines you’ve relied on for years need to be updated as well. If you’re over 50, almost there, or simply wanting to make changes to accommodate your changing skin, it’s about striking a balance: you need to add more moisture but don’t want to layer on products that are too heavy as they may settle into fine lines. Fortunately, you won’t need to make sweeping modifications, just simple, easy-to-execute changes that will make a beautiful impact. Ultimately, in the words of Bobbi herself, we believe that “it’s not about looking younger, it’s about looking better.” Assess what’s working (and what’s not) This isn’t news but mature skin is drier than it once was, perhaps even thinner. Blemishes may no longer be a consistent concern, but you probably notice that the texture of your skin has changed, or you have more signs of discoloration. This is a good time to take an inventory of your current products and routines, even lifestyle, and see what suits your current needs. If you’re been using the same stand-by products for the past couple of decades, then it’s probably time to make some changes. Your skin has changed, so should your products. Your focus when updating your habits and trying out new products will be about adding moisture back, but before we get to skincare and coverage, are you getting enough sleep? Drinking enough water? How’s your caffeine and alcohol intake? Skimping on quality slumber and adequate hydration not only affects your energy levels but neglecting these two pillars of health almost immediately shows up in your complexion—in dull-looking skin, under-eye bags, and more. Those are easy changes to make, and they make a world of difference. Focus on skincare As skin matures and thins, you’re probably noticing more fine lines, wrinkles, as well as faded scars, broken capillaries, or under-eye circles. We’ll get to coverage in a moment but first things first, skincare. If you haven’t been consistent with cleansing and moisturizing, now’s the time. A regular routine that nourishes and plumps your complexion will help with signs of fine lines and evening out your skin tone. Cleanse regularly, even if you haven’t put on any products or your skin is drier than it once was. A gentle cleanser is the answer, preferably one that’s oil-based, like The Cleansing Stick, which will ensure you’re not stripping extra moisture. If you’ve historically been leery of products with oil because of skin sensitivities, this won’t overwhelm or weigh down your skin, and it nourishes your complexion with vitamin-rich, plant-based oils. And even though we’re mentioning this last, it is the most crucial part: sunscreen. Do not forget sunscreen. Sun damage will create more problems than it’s worth, and can contribute to uneven skin tone and a rough texture. Here are some recommendations, from the lightest option to our most heavy-hitting moisturizers. Oil-Free Moisturizer All skin types can benefit from our lightweight Oil-Free Moisturizer, but if your historically oily skin is still oily, then start here—especially if you deal with heat and humidity regularly. Light Moisture Cream Light Moisture Cream is fast-absorbing, bouncy, and a pleasure to wear. Dry skin types will get the most out of this in hot, humid climates, and those with oily skin can use this as an overnight cream. It’s light enough to be used as a primer, too, and substantial enough for normal, balanced skin types. Miracle Cream Miracle Cream is the ultimate in rich hydration, a long drink of water for the driest skin types among us. Pro tip: During the winter, layering on Miracle Cream at night acts as a powerful mask. Eye Cream The under-eye area tends to show signs of dryness earlier than the rest of your complexion, so it’s important to nourish and protect this delicate area. And this goes for all skin types; you’ll be glad you added Eye Cream to your routine. Gently pat on a light layer with your ring finger (you can always build) to get the most benefits. Enhance, don’t mask It can be tempting to blindly apply more coverage but more isn’t necessarily the answer. The right products that target your primary concerns are. Too much product will probably settle and draw attention to fine lines or wrinkles so it’s key to be judicious with the amount of coverage you’re applying. You still want to see your skin. It’s a fine line between sufficiently covering up signs of aging but not overdoing it. You’re not trying to look younger, just better. Enhance what you’ve got; don’t mask it. We’ll go through some key products to add to your arsenal. Foundation Let’s talk about foundation first as we recommend applying that before concealer. For light to medium coverage, What The Foundation will be your new favorite. It’s part tinted moisture balm, part traditional foundation that evens out skin tone and adds back in a healthy dollop of hydration. Perfect if you’re dealing with dry skin. We’ve made it easy to find your most flattering shade; just answer a few questions here. If you’re looking for super light coverage, we recommend our Tinted Face Powder. It’s finely milled so you won’t need to worry about it settling into any fine lines. And even very dry skin types can wear it comfortably without fretting about a cakey appearance. Not sure which option is best for you? Here. Miracle Balm is perfect for women over 50. On its own, it provides bare coverage and adds back in moisture, luminosity, and color, freshening up your complexion. Bobbi calls it “genius in a pot”—we agree. Find your best shade with this quick quiz. Concealer You may find after applying your foundation of choice that you don’t need extra coverage. But if you haven’t totally addressed your visible skin concerns, then we suggest our Face Pencil. On hydrated skin, it doesn’t drag or catch, and leaves an undetectable finish. Actually, we suggest two colors of The Face Pencil: one that disappears on your cheek and one that disappears into your forehead (the lighter shade will be best for underneath your eye; darker color should be used for redness or around your nose). It’s helpful to understand both your skin tone and your skin undertone before you select your hues. But, of course, we also have a quiz to help you find your optimal shades. Add back in warmth You’re sufficiently moisturized, and you’ve evened out your skin tone. Next, we’re going to boost your natural glow. Don’t be afraid of color or shimmer—those aren’t just reserved for younger women. The key is to use a little product, and look for moisturizing options that won’t settle into fine lines. (We have plenty of recommendations on that front.) Bronzer and Blush Bronzer will add sun-kissed radiance to your complexion, a back-from-vacation warmth all year round. It’s an utterly natural look, one that everyone—no matter their skin type, concerns, or age—can embrace. Our Gel Bronzer can also be used on its own, even mixed with your moisturizer if you’re skipping coverage products, or atop What The Foundation. Simply apply it with a brush or with your fingertips. Prefer a powder? Enter The Bronzer. Use it on parts of your face where the sun would hit your skin, or depending on your coloring, some hues are beautiful as a blush. Feel free to forgo bronzer and go straight ahead to blush. If you’re unsure where to start, a pinky color is flattering on just about everyone. Dust on a bit of The Best Blush for a straightforward warmth with beautiful payoff, or for extra luminosity and moisture, there are a few options as well. As we’ve said, Miracle Balm works wonders for your complexion. It’s easy to use, completely versatile, and skin-perfecting. Our Lip and Cheek Stick offers a multipurpose pop of color. It glides on effortlessly, and nicely builds your color of choice. Shimmer Face Oil is instant illumination—never overpowering, never juvenile-looking. It’s a classic addition to a simple makeup look and perks up even the most tired-looking skin. Lip color You may have noticed that your natural lip color may have begun to fade, so even if lipstick has never really been your thing, consider adding in a neutral or a color that’s not bold—just to start. But also, don’t be scared of a vibrant red or pink. Bright colors are for all ages. Look for a creamy formula that’s buildable and moisturizing. (The more matte the product, the drier it tends to be—which means it’s more likely to reveal fine lines.) These aren’t meant to be hard and fast rules, just guidelines to help you figure out what makes you feel most comfortable and confident. Let the experimentation begin. The Lip Pencil lines lips for precision and polish, or you can use it for all-over color. It’s matte but moisturizing, so it doesn’t drag or catch, and there’s no issue with the product settling in. The colors are all nude-inspired—meaning we took our cues from the colors of your lips. This is the place to start to bring back your natural color. Our modern take on a traditional lipstick, The Lip Tint offers the most color payoff out of our options. It glides on easily, no mirror required (it’s that low-maintenance), and its moisturizing formula means you won’t be worried about the color settling into fine lines. Stay sheer with one coat, apply up to three—give or take—for the most pigment. Similar to The Lip Tint with its nourishing properties, our Lip and Cheek Stick offers a more subtle color payoff with less shine—a perfect, lightweight option for everyday or for amateurs who are skeptical about lip color. The beauty of Cool Gloss is in its name: it’s glossy and sheer, goes on smooth, feels good, and is never sticky or tacky. This is for those who want to embrace a more high-shine moment. For extra color payoff, layer on top of lipstick. Fill and define Your brows deserve some attention, and when they’re full (even if you’re faking it), this gives your face another focal point. Trimming and tweezing stray hairs are essential to a tidy, defined brow. As we age, hair thins, so you may not have as much to work with as you once did but this step should still be part of your routine. From there, apply The Brow Pencil in soft, quick strokes upward to fill in bare patches, and extend brows. We recommend topping with a swipe of The Brow Gel in the same color to finalize filling in any sparse areas. Best eye makeup for mature women Signs of aging tend to show up in the delicate under-eye area first, and you may be worried about makeup settling into creases or laugh lines. You may be tempted to avoid applying makeup in the eye area altogether, but that’s not the answer. Giving your eyes dimension and color keeps you looking alert and lively. It just takes some small modifications to avoid that dreaded cakiness or signs of settling. Moisturized, nourished skin will withstand evidence of exhaustion and act as a smooth canvas for your coverage and embellishment. That’s the first thing—which we’ve already discussed, but it bears repeating because that is the most crucial component to natural-looking eye makeup for mature women. No matter if your eyes are hooded or deep set, choose a neutral color. Bobbi recommends looking for a cool tone. Her go-tos for mature eyes are, for something shimmery, Just a Sec in Cool Brown or Cool Taupe, or for matte look, The Best Eyeshadow in Ash as they flatter all eye colors. Up the sparkle with a swipe of Sparkle Wash—on its own or atop a corresponding hue. Lastly, no look is ever complete without a coat or two of mascara. Ours is inky, conditioning, and volumizing. No one, no matter their age, wants clumps so before you bring the wand to your eyes, simply wipe it against the opening of the barrel to make sure you’re removing extra product. The Bottom Line Aging is cause for celebration, and facing mature skin—and the changes it brings—is something we will all have to do at one point or another. With a few simple adjustments, you can present your best face to the world, without trepidation or fear.
