I'm not sure about you, but I always find November to be a strange transition month, when the days are so short and the nights are so long. It can be easy to feel a bit lost or unbalanced or heavy. I've found for me the best way to combat that feeling is to spend a bit more energy being the light I need. Going outside for a walk, drinking a bit more water than usual, reaching out and talking with people in my life. Just as Dumbledore says "Happiness can be found even in the darkest times, if one only remembers to turn on the light"

For the last Teleidoscope Theme: Happily Ever After. I wanted an image that reflected the first shot I took for this project and then when I started to think about how the first and last images were of books, I thought it was neat to think of my whole Teleidoscope set as being a whole different world inside the book. I went to the same field and enjoyed the same view and crisp air as I did almost one year ago today. The teleidoscope has been an amazing journey, at the beginning we had quite a few video chats which were a fun way to get to know people from across the globe. I got to "meet" and make art alongside some amazing artists and I'm lucky to be able to call them friends. It's been an inspiring year that I'm sad to see end..... Which is why, I think I'm going to start up a Teleidoscope Year 2! Maybe I'll wait until Jan.1st so that people playing along can do a whole 52 weeks of 2012. Today's interview is with an amazing talent, I'm so glad I had the opportunity not only to explore his arts but also to get to know more of his personality :) ! He's the amazing Joel Robison aka( boy_wonder), Joel lives in Cranbrook,British Columbia, in Canada. It's a small town in the Rocky Mountains. He stumbled across Flickr and saw different people doing different projects and thought it was fun to try it out! You can't come across any of Joel's arts and not go in a mental journey through time and space to a magical place where Joel drinks coffee with Kirmet the frog, or walk through a field with giant tea cups and a lot more!! I think boy_ wonder is the best screen name for Joel because this boy can create wonders!! Along with this amazing talent Joel happens to be one of the sweetest, nicest internet personalities ever :) ! Let's get to know Joel a bit more through this interview! When was the first time you started taking photos? Aside from a short course I took in high school, the first time I really became involved in the process of taking photos would be around 2008, I discovered Flickr and was intrigued by the amazing art that was being created. What kind of camera do you use? and what kind of camera do you wish you had? I have an older Canon Xti, it's still a beautiful camera and it's served me well for the last couple of years. I would love to have a Canon Mark ii, I would love to be able to shoot video! Your images happen to have a kind of dreamy, fairytale feel to them! What do you so to stay inspired? I stay inspired by allowing my mind to wander and explore. I like to think of a specific topic, idea or theme and then let my mind wash over it a few times to see what kind of images come to front. Who was your biggest supporter when it comes to photography and life in general? I'm lucky to have a lot of support in my life, both from online communities as well as in my "real" life. My partner Scott is a huge supporter of my work and supports me in everything that I do. My parents have also always encouraged me to do whatever it is that makes me the happiest and they are endlessly supportive of my photography and crazy adventures :) What type of photography do you find challenging? I think landscape photography is tricky because I'm so used to having a concept behind a photo that I can't seem to find the focal point of a landscape to shoot it. I've tried and I like what I took but it doesn't feel like me so I don't shoot them often. Do you go for photoshoots by yourself or do you like company? I tend to do my photoshoots alone; I like the time alone to process my ideas and to take the time to get what I want. When I shoot with someone else I find myself a bit distracted and I feel a bit rushed and I usually end up forgetting something or not getting everything that I wanted. Name 3 things that are photography related that you can't live without. My tripod My remote control My photo journal, where I write down my ideas. Name photographers that you admire. The list is constantly growing but a few photographers that I admire include: Rodney Smith, Annie Leibovitz, Brooke Shaden, David Talley, and so many others. What photoshop tool you think people use too much? Hmm....I'm not a huge fan of selective colour, like when a photo is in black and white except for one colour...it just seems strange to me! If you could give one advice to an aspiring photographer, what would it be? Learn everything that your camera does and how you can change the settings depending on the photos that you want to take and the environment that you're in. Take pictures of everything and try new things to develop your style. Can you recommend a website that teaches photoshop other than your awsome blog :)? Well, I learned a lot from deviantart as well as psdtuts and Phlearn What is your favourite photo you have ever taken? I think this is my favourite Do you prefer outdoor photography or indoor? I love outdoor photography because I love lots of space in my work, I love showcasing the beauty of nature and I love that there are endless locations to shoot in! What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid? I would always answer that question with "an animator at Disney". Clearly that didn't happen :) Anything new coming up? I have a HUGE project about to start with a big company, I can't say too much until I sign the contract but I'm very excited about the opportunity. Why do you think people are so into self portraits? And how do you feel about people that think it's just narcissistic? I think that self-portraiture is one of the best ways to express yourself through art. It's such a beautiful way to show your feelings, emotions, thoughts, fears or ideas. I've had comments about it being narcissistic but I think that it's not about looking at yourself, it's about using yourself as a tool to express yourself. Using yourself as a model is a perfect opportunity to learn photography and how to shoot in different settings, to try new things and to keep growing. Have you ever consider creating a series? I've tried in the past to create small series of images, I tend to start them and then forget about them! What is beauty to you? Beauty to me is anything or anyone being completely natural. Just being alive and embracing life. tell me something might shock me about you? Haha...um, I don't drive. what scares you the most? I think what truly scares me is not having enough time in my life to do all the things that I want to do. If you could create the perfect camera what features would it have? Ooooh.....wireless connection to my computer, voice controls, a coffee maker! Is fame important to you? Not at all, feeling happy with the work that I create is the more important. Is there a photo you regret posting online? I don't think that I regret posting any photos but there are certainly photos that I look at and feel that they don't best represent my ideas or abilities. I think that with a 365 project and the time constraints of a project like that there are going to be days where you rush a bit and there are a few photos that I feel I could have done something better with. In your early years as a photographer, what were the mistakes you made a lot? I think over-editing, adding too much to an image instead of leaving it alone. What was your favorite game, toy as a kid? I had a lot of Lego, but I think my favourite thing to do as a kid was draw. What was the best location you've ever shot in? Hmm.....I think that one of my favourite places that I've taken photos in but haven't done conceptual photos in would be the Lake Louise area in Banff National Park. It's a beautiful park in the Rocky Mountains and it's just filled with glaciers and lakes and so much beauty. Name people you enjoy working with Well, I generally work alone :) Name other photographers you wish to work with. I would love to work with Brooke Shaden, Brad Wagner, David Talley, and so many other artists! Have you ever had an idea for a shoot and you never made it? oh yes, I have a journal that I am constantly writing ideas down. If I end up doing the idea I draw over it with yellow highlighter, but there are a lot of ideas that I have yet to do. Do you like using accessories in your shoots (wigs, costumes, hats)? If you do, can you tell us where do you get them from? Sometimes I use props. It's been a while since my last interview, but boy am I making up for that with this next interview! Joel (Boy Wonder) has literally today finished his 3rd 365, his images are so impeccably crafted and his imagination seems just endless. This will change your life! Day threehundredandsixtyfive 1. Fill me in on your background, where are you from and how did you get in to photography? Well, my name is Joel Robison and I live in Cranbrook, British Columbia, in Canada. It's a small town in the Rocky Mountains. I first started to get into photography about 4 years ago, I had stumbled across Flickr and saw a few people doing different projects and I thought it was a fun hobby to try out. I've been active on Flickr ever since! 2. What made you decide to start a 365? I started my first one about 3 years ago and I had started just because I saw some other people doing it and I thought it looked like fun. I didn't finish that first try, but I ended up trying it again a few months later and stuck with it. I decided to do my 2nd and 3rd 365 projects because I think it's an excellent way to grow as an artist and to stretch yourself creatively. 3. What is your process when taking your 365 from getting ideas to editing? I have a notebook that bring with me all the time that I use to brainstorm different ideas, when I think of a concept or a theme I write it out and then branch out possible photos I could do with it. Then I go out and shoot! I'm almost always alone when I work, I find it's easier to stay focussed and to get the shots that I need when I'm by myself. Depending on the shot I'm working on, it takes anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours of shooting to get all the images I need. I try to edit the photos right away because I feel that it really helps to work on an image in the same mindset. Most of my images are edited in between an hour to two hours. 4. What are your tools of the trade? Well, I use a Canon Xti which is an older model but it does the trick! I mainly use a 50mm 1.8 lens. I also have a lightweight tripod and a wireless remote. I use Photoshop to edit my images. 5. Why do you think people are drawn to starting and following 365's? I think they are drawn to it because it's a challenge and it's a chance to try new things. I also think it's a great visual diary of a year of your life so it's a chance to document your life and share it with others. I think that people like following them because it gives you a great opportunity to get to know an artist and learn about their lives and see them grow day to day. 6. What is your least favourate 365 shot you've taken so far and why? I would say this one: I was in a bad mood that day and I got caught in a thunderstorm which ended up making me stranded in this little brick hut for a few hours. I didn't feel like taking anything else that day so I was stuck with this shot and I didn't really like it. 7. What is your favourate 365 shot you've taken so far and why? Wow, it's hard to pick a favourite but if I had to, I would say this one: because it came out exactly the way I had in my head and that never happens. I was feeling really stressed at that time with a job that I didn't like and feeling like I didn't know where my life was going and this really felt like it fit how I felt about life, that I was just a silhouette and nothing real. 8. What is your favourite 365 shot taken by another photographer? Wow, an even HARDER question! I would have to say this one by David Talley: He is so clever and his use of space and light is just beautiful. I love how this image is just simply done yet speaks so much. 9. What are some of your favourate things :)? Well, I love bicycles, coffee, gnomes, peace signs, and cameras :) 10. What is your best tip to taking a striking photo? Use manual settings! If you learn everything that your camera can do, it's the first step to being able to take a shot in any situation. 11. Your 365 seem to incorporate your surroundings and the elements, is this a big part of your style? I think so. I live a beautiful area of the world and I want to incorporate as much of it as i can, partly because it inspires me and partly because I want to share it with the rest of the world. 12. Who's 365 has been the most inspiring to you? I would have to say Brooke Shaden's 365 project. I was able to see it from just about the beginning to end and her growth and development as an artist was beautiful to see. 13. What are some of your favourite films, books and musicians? I really enjoy Canadian music like Sarah Slean, Sarah Harmer, and Feist but I also enjoy Coldplay :) I like a variety of movies, mostly ones with lots of whimsy or surrealism like Alice In Wonderland. 14. What has been your biggest achievement so far with your photography and 365? I would say for me the biggest achievement has been the growth that I've been able to make from the start of my project until now, I'm proud of the skills I've learned and i'm happy that people enjoy what I do. 15. Do you think it’s hard to be original within the 365 project? How do you keep your ideas original and fresh? I think that it can be hard not to do cliche things in a 365 project but each person can interpret ideas in their own way which makes it original. I think that as long as you are staying true to your own vision, it's original! 16. Which 365 shot was the most difficult to capture? Easily this one: Not because the image itself was difficult to do, but the mosquitoes were so thick that there was literally a black cloud following me, with about 100 of them biting me at once. I could only manage to take about 10 photos before having minor freak out and at one point I think I swore quite loudly! 17. Do you often change a lot of the original photo in Photoshop? It really depends on the image itself, sometimes I just play with the tones and contrast a bit but other times I create a lot of additions like lighting, props, and textures. 18. Do you think you have an original style that is you own? Um, I don't think I do, but other people have told me that I do. I think that I use a lot of the same techniques like multiple objects close to the edge to create DOF, but I don't know if that's original style or not :) 19. What is your favourate time of year to take photos? Hmmm......I would say spring time because the weather is usually nice and the sun is out long enough to give me lots of time to shoot. Each season brings with it, it's own set of advantages and disadvantages and the fun part is trying to incorporate them all! 20. If you could photograph any person alive or dead who would it be and why? Wow...tough question. I think if I could photography anyone it would be my grandparents. I only have one living grandmother now and I would love to have been as involved in photography when my other grandparents were alive to capture them in my own way. 21. Give us the skinny, what's the next big project you've got coming up? haha! Well, I have a blog that I'll be posting tutorials and different stuff (joelrobisonphoto.wordpress.com ) I'm also hoping to being a 52 weeks project in January called The Teleidoscope. 22. Which actor would play you in the film of your life? Um....if I got to choose I would say maybe Ryan Gosling :) 23. What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid I would always answer with: A Disney Animator This was definately one of the hardest interviews to construct simply because I wanted to pick so many images to feature!!! Although Joel has finished his 3rd 365 Day Project (seriously this guy is magic!) he says he will still be posting regularly, plus...I only managed to show you a small sample of the amazing journey (or rather one of the amazing journey's) Joel has been on. Today was a nice glimpse of spring, the weather felt so warm and even the wind stopped just long enough for it to feel like winter was finally over. I came up with this idea while on a run this morning. The idea for me has dual meanings, one to signify my hope for spring to start and winter to be over, and one to signify letting out my own thoughts and worries and letting them fly away, the last few weeks I've been feeling just really frustrated and stressed and I decided today that I wasn't going to let those feelings bog me down anymore, here's hoping tomorrow continues to be as green as today ;)
This in an image that means a lot to me, as it's a huge hint to what my next chapter in life is about to be. I'm happy to say that in about 4 more days this photo will make much more sense as I'll finally be able to share with you all what adventure awaits me!
