A French bust in bronze with original gold patina is derived from a masterpiece by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The original Bust of Louise Brongniart (1772-1845) was made of terracotta in 1777 and exhibited in the Louvre in Paris. Houdon's busts of Louise and her brother Alexandre, children of architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart, became very popular in the 19th and 20th centuries and were profusely reproduced in bronze, biscuit and marble. The bust stands on a yellow Siena marble base. Signed "D'apres Houdon" on the back. Foundry mark Les Neveux de Jules Lehman, Paris.
