On one of the best mornings as far as weather goes we've seen all summer.. even though it just started. Sorry for so many shots of the capitol here lately but I've had to go back a few times to make sure our client has the exact shot they need. Strobist: One Vivitar 285 below the bell and one to the right. The sun doing the rest.

The Mississippi State Capitol is located in Jackson and has been the home of Mississippi's state legislature since 1903. It is the third capitol building in Jackson. It was created by Theodore Link, an architect from St. Louis, Missouri. The building cost $1,095,681, which was paid by the Illinois Central Railroad in the form of back taxes they owed to the state. The building, which is in the Beaux-Arts architectural style, was designed to house all branches of the Mississippi state government. In 1979, it had a complete renovation, which cost $19 million. The renovation attempted to maintain the original design whenever practical. It was completed in 1983. The Hall of Governors is located on the first floor. Portraits of Mississippi's governors since the creation of the Mississippi Territory in 1798 are on display. The State Library and the Supreme Court chamber, now both committee meeting rooms, are located on the second floor. The Legislature is housed on the third floor, along with the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House's offices. Public viewing balconies for both chambers are located on the fourth floor.

Jackson, Mississippi is one of the South's underrated destinations, full of fascinating museums and old-school restaurants.
Built by Jackson car dealer and industrialist R. E. "Dumas" Milner, Jackson's iconic Sun-n-Sand Motor Hotel was originally to be called the Midtown Motor Inn. Milner changed the name and the theme to coincide with his Sun-n-Sand in Biloxi and opened the hotel in 1960. Closed in 2002, the Sun-n-Sand may soon be fading away into the sunset for a state office building. It would be great if it could be turned into something like the Ace Hotel in Portland, but time is running out for this tiki-themed downtown institution. Its Polynesian Room was once a popular hangout for the state legislators, many of whom lived in the hotel. The land is too near the state capitol building to escape the probable fate of replacement with a shiny new office building for the same lawmakers who once haunted its halls. Note: This is a new version of a photograph I published long ago. TB
