Inukshuks are an important national symbol of Canada, holding many meanings closely related to Inuit life. Whether it was used as a guide for hunting, mark where food was kept, or warn those from danger, the Inukshuk was a universal symbol, acting as an embodiment of a human.

2.5" Frosted Glass Inukshuk Inukshuk pronounced (in-ook-shook), is a stone monument erected in the image of humans. One of their purposes was to serve as direction markers in the harsh and desolate Arctic. They were a tool of survival and a symbol of unselfish acts of the Inuit people. The Inukshuk symbolizes co-operation, balance and unselfishness; the idea that teaching and group effort is greater than individual effort. Each stone is a separate entity, yet each supports, and is supported by the one above and the one below it. No one piece is any more or any less important than the other. Its strength lies in its unity. Its significance comes from its meaning as a whole. The Inukshuk reminds us of our interdependent responsibilities to invest our efforts today, to direct a better way for all of us tomorrow. Each Sculpture comes with a Symbolism Card Explaining the significance of the Inukshuk.
The Inukshuk symbolism is far reaching - they were a beacon to those looking for the right direction and a safe passage.
Inuksuk 13 in.(33cm), Concrete Inukshuk, Inuit Art, Stone Sculpture, Stone Marker, Inunnguaq Marker, Artic Navigation, AvtechstoneGallery An inuksuk or inukshuk is a type of manmade stone landmark or cairn built for use by the Inuit, Iñupiat, Kalaallit, Yupik, and other peoples of the Arctic region of North America. These structures are found in northern Canada, Greenland, and Alaska. Traditionally, they were used by the Inuit in the north as directional markers. An Inukshuk in the shape of a person signifies safety, hope and friendship. These stone sculptures were also important for navigation, as a point of reference, as a marker for hunting grounds, or to denote a food cache. While stone figures resembling human forms are often referred to as inuksuk, such figures are actually known as inunnguaq. Inuksuk (also spelled inukshuk, plural inuksuit). Meaning “in the likeness of a human” in the Inuit language, these mysterious stone figures are found throughout the circumpolar world (and often on hiking trails in the Canadian Rocky Mountains) and are the oldest, and most important, objects placed by humans upon the vast Arctic landscape.

The typical design of an inukshuk is made up of a foundation of two stones for the legs, a few longer, flatter stones for the body and arms, and one o

Happy Father's Day!! I hope all the dad's out there are having a great one! :D Today I am sharing a present that my kids made for their dad... When researching Inukshuks for our new Proudly Canadian set I discovered that people can make their own mini Inukshuks. I thought the kids would have fun building some. :) We bought rocks at Michael's (note - after they were done we found that our Dollar Tree sells the same bags, oh well! LOL) and started planning our Inukshuks. The hardest part is figuring out what glue will hold them. The rocks are polished smooth so you can't use hot glue... we wound up using a combo of Super Glue and E6000. The E6000 alone didn't work because to was too flexible and the rocks wiggled. The Super glue also bonds faster. Warning - they are VERY FRAGILE! My little guy broke them apart twice. I think that I'm going to do a little more research and see if I can find a better glue for rocks and re-glue these Inukshuks too. Here are the individual figures and a close up of the card I made... To make the card I typed up the Inuit definition and a few more philosophical meanings on Photoshop and then used a stamp from Proudly Canadian. I might poke around and see if I can find a better adhesive for rock - if I find anything I will update you all. :) My husband loved his little Inukshuks! I hope that you enjoyed seeing them too. Have a great Sunday! {{{ HUGS }}}

When I was 6 years old, Vancouver hosted Expo 86. A great deal of monumental structures were built that year which includes Canada Place, Science World, and the Skytrain system. However, one lesser-recognized addition was the inukshuk statue which currently stands at the southern end of English Bay Beach. The inukshuk was a gift from the Inuit of Canada's arctic territories to Vancouver. The inukshuk at English Bay People always come up with different interpretations for what inukshuks are. When I was in grade 4 studying the Inuit, I was taught two things about inukshuks: that they were traditionally built as place markers on the vast and barren tundra, and that they were somehow used to herd caribou. Despite their traditional uses, these human-like stone statues are widely recognized as symbols of Canada's Inuit culture. In 2003 when Vancouver won the bid to host the 2010 winter Olympics, a contest was held to design the official logo. The winner's design was a colourful interpretation of an inukshuk, inspired by the one at English Bay. The winning entry initially caused a huge controversy because people thought that the inukshuk design looked too amateurish. Others complained that it had absolutely nothing to do with Vancouver's identity, but instead, its link to the Arctic continued to persist the cold and snowy Canadian stereotype. I think there was a 90% disapproval rating for the inukshuk design, but it was chosen anyway and was first shown at the 2006 Torino Olympics during the closing ceremonies. Despite the initial public disapproval, I think Canadians have warmed up it (no pun intended). I know I have! This past summer when I visited Whistler, I took the gondola up to the top of the mountain. As we neared the top, I noticed that a new inukshuk had been built, obviously a replica of the logo. Although inukshuks aren't from this part of Canada, that inukshuk at the peak of Whistler seemed appropriately monumental, greeting visitors in anticipation of the upcoming 2010 Olympics. All I know is that one day in the not-too-distant future, I'll be watching that very inukshuk and the mountainous panorama behind it on TV. The inukshuk on top of Whistler

Build stone men. It's a fun relaxing activity for you and the kids. It doesn't cost anything and doesn't take much time. These stone men are known as Inuksuk in Canada.
There is a lot of Ted Harrison love at the school these days. Both Grades 2 and 3 are completing art projects based on his work. Ted Harrison is a well known Canadian artist famous for his use of line and color in his landscape paintings around his beloved Yukon home. This is an easy art project based on his work. MATERIALS REQUIRED: - watercolor paper or heavy weight sketch paper - watercolor, tempera, or acrylic paints - black paper - glue - scissors - reference photos (there are lots of images of Ted Harrison's work online) - oil pastels or wax crayons I like to tape off my paper and then draw in your line design. You want to discuss the way Ted Harrison uses a strong line to show shape or contour of the landscape, how the line is just as important as the color. With younger kids you may want to use pastels or wax crayons and draw those heavy lines. I'm using crayon here and they resist the paint allowing you to keep those heavy lines, oil pastels work even better. Start painting. It's good to start with the lightest colors first and then work your way to the darkest. Although the crayon or pastel resists the paint you still want the kids to stay within the lines if the can so you have those separate areas of deep color. With older kids you can get them to conserve that white line. When painting with watercolors you'll want to leave some space between the colors any way so they don't mix together before drying. Another option is to try the stained glass method. I've mixed a couple of squirts of acrylic paint into a bottle of white school glue. I then use this to mark my heavy lines, lie flat and let dry. (about 12 hrs.) Once the glue is dry paint in your strong color. They glue helps to corral the paint in each area for easier painting. Now you can add an Inukshuk if you wish. Cut out individual stones out of black paper. Then glue down on top of your painting. Place a sheet of wax paper on top and rest a heavy book on top of that to help it dry flat. The paintings also look great just on their own. Here is some work by Grade 2. They used their twistables for this and it turned out terrific but I think they are ready to try the painting option. Great work grade 2!
