Color, collage, and much more - art lessons galore... help yourself and explore!
Barry and I have been doing a fair bit of tidying up and sorting out around the place - a bit like a Spring clean I suppose. In doing so, we came across our range of peace flags from this year and last and thought to ourselves; why don't we just hang them altogether? We chose out the back near the peace bell deck, where we already fly Jennifer's flags from last year. In the end we strung the recycled baby-wipes flags, Barry's metal flags, my peace crane fabric flags and Barry's last year's rainbow umbrella flags. I think they look great and make me smile whenever I see them! Looking out from the house... Looking back at the house... Closer up from down below… From the side with the peace bell… Closer up from the side with the peace bell and the breeze! We also have my handmade paper with origami peace crane flags still flying out the front of our house as a welcome. I am so happy they have made it thru since 21 September…a month a half outside is not bad for paper I think! Just wanted to share some of the ongoing joy of the peace flags around…go well.

This is my fifth year starting out doing a lesson based on the International Day of Peace (Sept. 21) and tying it in with beginning of the year basics. I always teach about what symbols mean, what the word "peace" means, and how the peace sign came to be. I was actually published in Teach Boldly where I wrote a portion of a chapter about my first experience teaching this unit. This year after showing a slide show on the peace sign, other peace symbols such as the dove and olive branch- and introducing works of Pablo Picasso and Rene Magritte-- I went back to basics with my new fifth graders. We reviewed color mixing with model magic. Then each student made their own peace sign, also including texture if they chose to do so. Each student was responsible for creating an accompanying tag with their name and a sentence about how they define peace of what it means to them using thin marker and colored pencil. I hung them in the window, they looked awesome! We are currently working on another related lesson that focuses on composition and overlapping. ---------------- Past lessons I have done include these below: Primary colors mixed with a new take on Pinwheels for Peace. Rainbow colors of marker lines turned into paint- and then collaged onto the peace sign. Hands put together to form a large peace sign. One grade I had draw examples of peaceful and respectful behaviors to set examples for the other students.
Hi everyone! It's Elyse from Proud to be Primary and I'm happy to be sharing with you an important lesson all students should learn and be reminded of often. All about peace! Tomorrow is Remembrance Day in Canada (where I live), as well as Veteran's Day in the US, so I wanted to share some of my classroom peace activities on the blog today. Head over to my blog today to read all about Remembrance Day in Canada and see the poppy art activities we completed. In November, I like to focus on peace and teaching my students what it is. I love Todd Parr books and 'The Peace Book' is a great simple story that clearly illustrates to children what peace is. This is often a hard topic to explain, but this book lends itself nicely to many topics for discussions that children understand and can relate to. After the book, we brainstorm everything that peace is to them on a chart. This year, my kiddos had so many great ideas, we filled to full sheets of chart paper with ideas! (I also encourage my kiddos to use descriptive language in their sentences) Some of my favourite examples were... Peace is caring for all the animals and creatures of the Earth! Peace is playing at the beach in the warm sun. Peace is having a place to live and food to eat. Peace is donating and giving to others in need. WOWZERS was I impressed with their BIG ideas!! Next, I asked them to write a poem of peace with the sentence starter 'Peace is...' They were each encouraged to express what peace meant to them in sentences. I was very pleased that each poem was so unique and really expressed their personalities. Here are our poems on our Wow Work board...very deserving of the WOW! They did an amazing job! If you would like a copy of the 'Peace Is' templates head over to my store to download. Another activity I have done with my class in previous years, is to take our peace ideas and write poems in the shape of a dove. I have them attach pieces of tissue paper in rainbow order to the bottom of the doves and I hang them around the room. How do you teach about peace in your classroom? Thank you for stopping by and reading my post!
