The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland for centuries. It is featured in many Scottish symbols and even on UK currency. According to one of the best-known thistle legend, in the mid 13th century, Viking forces landed on the coast of Scotland. During the night raid, one of their soldiers’ bare feet came down on a Scottish thistle. His shout warned the Scots who defeated the enemy at the Battle of Largs, thus saving Scotland from Norsemen’s invasion. The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is the Scottish order of knighthood. Its modern period dates from King James VII of Scotland (James II of England), who revived it in 1687. As with many orders of chivalry, its origins lie much further back in time. The Order’s primary emblem is the thistle, the national flower of Scotland. The motto is “Nemo me impune lacessit” (Latin for “No one provokes me with impunity”). The same motto appears on the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom for the use in Scotland and on some pound coins. This prickly purple flower itself, the legends associated with it, along with a large number of thistle drawings, ornaments, and jewelry inspired me to create this shawl. I offer you a triangular Fair Isle shawl. It is knitted with a steek, in the round from bottom tip up. When your shawl has reached the desired length, the steek should be reinforced and cut open; folded and tucked down facing will cover the cut edges. There is a section of short rows, where you will have to work your Fair Isle pattern flat, knitting it on the right side of the work and purling on the wrong side. In knitting, a steek itself is a group of extra 6-12 sts that are for future cutting. The first and the last stitches of the steek (the edges of the steek) are always worked with the same color (I prefer to use a background color) as it makes it easier to pick up stitches for the finishing along these lines. The stitches in between the edges are worked in a ‘chequerboard’ pattern that allows them to stick better to each other. Recommended yarn: Pure sheep wool 100g/350-400 m (fingering/sock weight). You will need yarn of two different colors - main color (MC) for the background, and contrast color (CC) for the pattern - approximately 350-400 g of each color. I recommend to choose two solid colors; as, in my opinion, variegated yarn would not work well for this design. However, you may try and find your own way. For the embroidered flowers in the center element of the shawl, I used leftover bits of Knoll Soft Donegal tweed - it took less than 10 g. You may use mouline embroidery thread, or any other yarn or thread of suitable weight and color. Optionally, you may incorporate beads in your knitting. You want to be absolutely certain that your yarn wouldn’t bleed! Check the color fastness of the yarn with a swatch. Needles and Notions: Knitting needles 2.5 - 3.5 mm (double-pointed and circular); spare needles/cables; stitch markers; scissors; 1.75 mm crochet hook; tapestry needle; beads (optional). Difficulty level - high. Skills required: Knit and purl in Fair Isle (stranded colorwork) technique, both flat and in the round; short rows knitting; pick up stitches along edges; picot edge knitting; embroidery on knitting. For those who are new to steeking: you may be frightened by the idea of cutting a knitted fabric. But when everything has been done right, you will be excited with the result! (The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle) — рыцарский орден, связанный с Шотландией. Девиз ордена Nemo me impune lacessit (с лат.
