Did you know that you can print on your index cards? I don’t know about you but I don’t have the neatest handwriting and I tend to have more to write then I can manually fit onto one index card. If you have this problem too then this just might be your answer. I […]
Two weeks ago, I started an exploration of lesser-know filing systems with the Noguchi system. This method, devised by Japanese economist Noguchi Yukio, utilizes manilla envelopes and the frequency wi
I am going to post a few more pictures of my language arts interactive notebook that I took a couple of weeks ago. I have been posting a few with each blog, but am going to post several more of them on this entry. It has been what seems like a long week, so I am going to KISS this post! That is an acronym I teach my students: Keep It Short and Simple. We KISS a lot of stuff when appropriate! This is a double bubble map we used while reading The Cay by Theodore Taylor. This is a summarization strategy I found online call "the incredible shrinking notes" where students start out writing a summary of a reading selection on the large index card. Students are then given the medium sized card and have to take the information from the large card and condense it onto the medium sized card. Finally, students are given the small card and must then take the information from the medium sized card and condense it down either further onto the small card. This is a great way for students to get to the main point/idea of a selection. This is a brief biography of Theodore Taylor we glued in our notebooks when we were reading The Cay, one of his awesome books that can be integrated into either the study of South America or Central America or World War II. It also has great examples of dialect. This is a foldable on poetry terms. Notes on figurative language with some color coding to make the notes user friendly. Poetry notes also color coded to make them easier to use and more helpful. More poetry notes...notice an example is created with each type of poem so students have a reference point to refer to when needed. Once I teach poetry, it is fair game to require students to respond to any type of reading in poetry form. I teach poetry between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year, which gives students an opportunity to use their poetry skills for the whole second semester. Another page of poetry notes. Our last page of poetry notes. Note the "I Am" poem rules taped into student notebooks and then our class example written underneath. We used "Winter Morning Poem" and a sheet of generic poetry analysis questions to aid in comprehension. The questions are taped into the notebook so when students open them, they can see both poem and questions/answers together. This is just another poem where we were marking the rhyme scheme, lines, and stanzas.

I’m now going deeper into this planning and editing of my novel than I ever anticipated. In this week’s video I share how I’ve broken the novel up into chapters and, following on from the last video where I drew up a grid to identify gaps in the plot, I am now starting to make additions on the index

As summer approaches, I always find myself thinking about specific students and wondering how they will do at home all summer long. One simple activity I like to do with them before the end of the year is build a coping toolbox that they can use at home during the summer.

Last year I took a wonderful book binding class at the International Printing Museum in Torrance. It was taught by Book Artist Lucia Frias Villarreal . She has a Masters degree in bookmaking, so I feel I learned from the best! She taught us Coptic binding which was developed in Egypt as early as the second century AD. Essentially it is a stitching method where you attach your pages "signatures" to your covers. I have collected several drink coasters from Chili's and thought they would make some great starter covers for my mini books. I had all of these wonderful Vintage images I collected to use for my Summer inspired projects, but didn't end up using all of them. So I printed out my favorites and started stitching away. Traditionally you would use a special waxed string. I ended up using bakers twine which I waxed myself using a tea light! I really loved how they came out. I used some vintage book pages from damaged books for my signatures. {coptic edges} {i love this vintage Barbie image} {inside the signatures you can see the bakers twine} {the pages are from old books, a toy collectors catalog and a family satire from the 70's} I am thinkin of offering this for a class at the Vintage. They are so fun to make, and a bit challenging! -Denise

I recently rediscovered the charm of little paper flexagons, known in the cardmaking world as never-ending or infinity cards. I find it fascinating to unfold each page, revealing the card maker’s vision beneath, until I magically end up back where I started. Infinity cards also make an ideal mixed-media substrate. I use them to make…

The fact is that numerological numbers, determined by assigning a number to each letter of an individual’s name as well as the day of birth as they appears on the birth certificate, are unique to each and every person. In simple terms, numerological numbers are calculated by taking the sum of these numbers and combining them in a variety of ways. Generally, they are then interpreted and presented in a numerology report. However, with knowledge and understanding you can do this yourself. A comprehensive numerology report may initially appear somewhat intimidating as it may likely contain information derived from a
