Op dit vulkanisch eiland moeten de bewoners uit het goede hout gesneden zijn om dag in dag uit de kracht van de natuur te trotseren. ‘Winter is Coming’ was een geijkte uitspraak uit de topserie Game of Thrones. Die is hier echt wel van toepassing. Laten we in deze blog wat meer te weten komen over dit mysterieuze, maar aantrekkelijke land.

IJsland – een verhaal over vuur en ijs, haat en liefde Zoals jullie wellicht op mijn social media kanalen hebben gezien, was ik onlangs voor de tiende keer op mijn geliefde IJsland. Ik stond namelijk te popelen om mijn vriend voor het eerst kennis te laten maken met deze bijzondere bestemming en besloot daarom opnieuw een vakantie te combineren met een werkreis. Want immers als je in de reisbranche werkzaam bent, komt het nog maar zelden voor dat je écht compleet op vakantie bent. Ik zie namelijk altijd overal wel een verhaal in of een fotomoment dat even vastgelegd moet worden. Wellicht lijkt dit vermoeiend, maar ik ben al sinds mijn negentiende werkzaam in deze branche en dus niet anders gewend. Tien keer IJsland! Afgelopen week was ik dus voor de tiende keer op IJsland. Een bijzondere bestemming die ik voor het eerst bezocht in 2006 toen ik op doorreis was van New York naar Amsterdam en ik was meteen onder de indruk van dit bijzondere land. Van de ruige natuur, de vriendelijke mensen, het knusse maar moderne Reykjavík en de bijzondere landschappen. Dat er op IJsland veel veranderd is de laatste jaren was me al duidelijk door de grote aantallen mensen die ineens ook naar IJsland willen, maar wat ik deze keer aantrof op IJsland sneed me keihard door mijn ziel. Het woord overtoerisme is zonder twijfel van toepassing op IJsland, of althans grote delen ervan. En dat deed pijn. Heel veel pijn. Niet omdat ik IJsland niet aan anderen gun, maar wel omdat ik met eigen ogen getuige ben geweest van de schofterige manier waarop mensen met de IJslandse natuur omgaan. Lees en huiver. Verantwoord reizen op IJsland Laat ik voorop stellen dat ik het als persoon steeds belangrijker vind om me bewust te zijn van duurzaam(er) reizen. Ik ben wat vliegen betreft bepaald geen heilige, maar probeer wel zo min mogelijk te vliegen. Ook houd ik me ten allen tijden netjes aan de regels van het land waar ik ben, draag ik bij aan de lokale economie door zo veel mogelijk kleinschalig te doen en promoot ik vaak zonder tegenprestatie een bepaalde bestemming. Uiteraard was ik me ervan bewust dat er behoorlijk wat mensen de regels aan hun laars (of in dit geval: de snowboots) lappen en gewoon doen waar ze zin in hebben. Dat veel mensen geen idee hebben hoe ze respectvol met de natuur om moeten gaan. Dat mensen vaak het gevaar van moeder natuur niet inzien. Maar als je het dan met eigen ogen ziet, doet dat pijn. Heel veel pijn zelfs. Wat een toerist zoal doet op IJsland Onderstaand een aantal pijnlijke voorbeelden van gebeurtenissen die ik de afgelopen week op IJsland heb meegemaakt. En nee, geen van deze dingen is verzonnen. Echt niet. – Tijdens mijn hike in Reykjadalur was er slecht weer voorspeld in de middag. Hoewel het ‘s ochtends zonnig was, staat er overal uitgebreid aangegeven om ten allen tijden de weersvoorspellingen in de gaten te houden. Toen wij eenmaal met onze kont in de hete stroom lagen te badderen, begon het te sneeuwen. Tijd om ons weer aan te kleden en naar beneden af te dalen, een wandeling van een goede drie kwartier. Net voor we bij de auto waren, kwam er een stel omhoog gelopen. In een wollen trui, gympies en een spijkerbroek. Terwijl het inmiddels met bakken uit de hemel kwam. Gympies, een spijkerbroek en een wollen trui. Geen wandelschoenen, geen regenkleding, helemaal niks van dat alles. Terwijl het boven op de berg vroor … Ik heb werkelijk waar medelijden met de IJslandse Search & Rescue die jaarlijks dit soort idioten moet redden, op vrijwillige basis! – We maakten een Volcano & Lava tour op uitnodiging van BaseCamp Iceland. Onze gids vertelde dat de lavagrot die we zouden bezoeken haast niet te vinden is en dat het totaal onverstandig is om hier zelf op pad te gaan. En dat het eigenlijk verboden is om je zonder een gids in de grot te bevinden. Wij dachten ‘welke idioot gaat er nu zonder gids een lavagrot in?’ maar je raadt het vast … niet veel na ons kwam een groep Indiërs de grot binnen. Met slechts een iPhone in hun hand en geen idee waar ze mee bezig waren. Onze gids heeft ze vriendelijk doch dringend verzocht de grot te verlaten. Later leerden we hoe makkelijk je in een dergelijke grot kunt verdwalen en hoe donker het is als je geen verlichting meer hebt. – Tijdens ons bezoek aan het ijsbergenmeer van Fjallsárlón (aanrader trouwens) was er een familie van het afgezette pad afgeweken. Een pad staat niet voor niks gemarkeerd, maar zij dachten dus dat de touwen die ter afzettingen dienden niet voor hun van toepassing waren. De oudste van het gezelschap was op een stuk sneeuw gaan lopen en hier doorheen gezakt. Minimaal tot kniehoogte, wellicht dieper. Omdat het enorme compacte sneeuw was kon hij zichzelf niet bevrijden en moest iemand anders over het ijs naar hem toe tijgeren om hem eruit te graven. Moeder en dochter stonden erbij en een derde stond alles te filmen met een GoPro en een selfiestick. Uiteindelijk kroop de betreffende man terug naar het pad, een schoen armer. De loser … Met open mond van verbazing Mocht je je verbazen over het bovenstaande, dan ben je niet de enige. Ik heb namelijk echt met open mond van verbazing staan kijken naar bovenstaande situaties. En dan is dit nog niet eens alles wat ik heb meegemaakt. Zo meende iemand dat het okee was om zijn/haar plastic koffiebeker bij de geiser neer te gooien, heb ik mensen bijna in een hete stroom zien stappen en op een ijsberg in het ijsbergenmeer zien klimmen. Plus meer, maar dat bewaar ik voor een volgende keer. Weet je, het was niet eens het aantal toeristen dat me zo’n pijn deed. Maar wel het geduw en getrek bij sommige viewpoints, de enorme lading aan selfiesticks, de mensen die alleen meer door de lens kijken en de manier waarop waarschuwingsborden en afzettingen genegeerd worden. Echt mensen, denk na! IJsland is geen bestemming waar het altijd wel goed komt. IJsland en zijn natuur kennen geen genade en nergens ter wereld heb ik dichter oog in oog gestaan met de dood dan hier. Toch ben ik blij dat ik weer op IJsland was. Dat ik mijn vriendin Birna voor het eerst sinds een jaar weer zag, dat ik heerlijk heb kunnen badderen in warme bronnen, mooie hikes heb gemaakt, ontzettend veel ijs heb gezien, een hamburger heb kunnen eten bij de Hamborgara Fabrikkan en dat ik het gevoel dat ik ‘het noordelijke gevoel’ noem weer heb mogen ervaren. Net nadat ik uit een overbevolkte Secret Lagoon (‘We kept it unique for you’ … my ass!) stapte was ik even in de war en wilde ik het liefst niks meer over IJsland schrijven. Dit gevoel veranderde langzaam in het gevoel dat het mijn taak is om mensen te waarschuwen voor IJsland. Dat het druk (maar nog steeds heel mooi) is, dat het tamelijk duur is, dat het bij vlagen heel gevaarlijk is en dat het vooral geen pretpark is. Dat we met zijn allen méér respect moeten opbrengen voor de natuur want anders gaat dit prachtige land kapot. En daar zit natuurlijk niemand op te wachten. Binnenkort volgen er dus meer blogs over mijn geliefde IJsland. Het land dat inmiddels 13 jaar geleden mijn hart stal en waar ik ook een volgende keer weer met heel veel plezier en liefde naartoe wil gaan. Tot dan!
