The exhibition of over-size colossal bronzes by Polish artist Igor Mitoraj closes 1 Many 2017 after a 12-month run. The traveling exhibition arrived in Pompeii from a widely hyped stints in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and the Trajan's Forum in Rome. In all, 28 bronze sculptures were placed in strategic areas of Pompeii, including the Temple of Isis, the Forum, the Stabian Baths and the portico of the amphitheater. Mitoraj chose the location of each sculpture in Pompeii before his death three years ago. The elegant sculptures, inspired iconology based on Classical myths and legends, exquisitely complemented the ancient ruins of ancient Pompeii. A perfect marriage between modern and ancient culture.

Igor Mitoraj ( Oederan, actual Alemania, 26 de marzo de 1944 ). Escultor polaco. Estudió en la Escuela de Arte y la Academia de Bellas Artes de Cracovia con Tadeusz Kantor. Tras algunas exposiciones colectivas, en 1967 celebró su primera exposición individual, en la Galería Krzysztofory. Al año siguiente partió hacia París, para continuar sus estudios en la Escuela Nacional de Arte. Fascinado por el arte y la cultura latinoamericana, pasó un año en México, lo que le hizo cambiar la pintura por la escultura. Volvió a París en 1974 y dos años más tarde realiza otra exposición individual importante (Galería La Hune), dedicada ya a la escultura. En 1979 viaja a Carrara (Italia), y se pasa al mármol como medio principal, sin dejar de trabajar en terracota y bronce. En 1983 instala su estudio en Pietrasanta En 1986 participa con una sala personal de la Bienal de Venecia. Realiza otras muestras individuales en Milán (Compagnia del Disegno, 1987) y Nueva York (Academy of Art, 1989). En 2001 es nombrado ciudadano honorario de Pietrasanta y recibe el Premio Vittorio de Sica a su trayectoria artística. Su estilo parte de la tradición clásica pero introduce un toque postmoderno al truncar deliberadamente las extremidades, lo que en las obras clásicas es el resultado de las vicisitudes que han sufrido a lo largo del tiempo.
El escultor alemán de origen polaco Igor Mitoraj murió el pasado 6 de octubre en París. Lo conocemos por sus esculturas de los héroes caidos; con ellas pretendía denunciar el abandono del arte clásico. El año próximo se le dedicará una amplia muestra. Conocido en todo el mundo por sus gigantescas esculturas en bronce y mármol, Mitoraj denunciaba la desidia y el abandono padecido por las obras maestras de la antigüedad, a través de bustos masculinos tumbados, cabezas fracturadas y miembros partidos. Mitoraj toma como fuente de inspiración el arte clásico y renacentista, aunque se permite alguna que otra pequeña licencia de carácter onírico, simbólico o, a juicio de algunos, surreal. Su modelo es casi siempre el hombre, su cuerpo, su torso, su cara, sus piernas..., pero en los títulos alude a veces a seres mitológicos como Eros o Ícaro. "Eros es el de hoy, no es una alusión directa al mito, sino a su expresión hoy en día", comentaba ayer el artista. "El arte antiguo tiene un alma propia y es siempre un modelo para nosotros, como lo fue la sociedad griega antigua con su culto a la proporción o a la democracia. Ahora parece que hemos olvidado esta fuente originaria de nuestra civilización", añadió Mitoraj, quien insistió en que sus modelos y de lo que quiere hablar es el hombre contemporáneo, de hoy. "No me interesa la moda, hago un arte muy difícil, que es figurativo, y supongo que sobre el mismo hay opiniones para todos los gustos. En cualquier caso, estoy en lo opuesto del arte posmoderno", comentó decidido el artista, que se mostró encantado de que la gente tocara sus esculturas e incluso de que los niños se introdujeran literalmente en ellas. Pese a que la crítica no siempre le apoyó, el gran público le adoraba. Quizás fuera porque sus héroes caídos, a menudo, representados solo por miembros mutilados o enormes rostros de ojos vendados y cuencas vacías, conseguían transmitir el malestar del hombre contemporáneo y su precariedad y fragilidad. Además de simbolizar la pasión nostálgica por la edad dorada de la escultura clásica, el carácter arcaizante del trabajo de Mitoraj implica un desafío a la modernidad. Lo que es evidente es que la obra de este escultor no se ajusta a los cánones de las corrientes principales del arte contemporáneo, ni a modas más o menos pasajeras representadas de nuestro arte de hoy. Su obra goza de una existencia al margen de este mundo y aporta la continuidad histórica de la que nuestra cultura contemporánea tan ávidamente intenta deshacerse. A Mitoraj le importan el rostro y el cuerpo humano no sólo y no tanto como elemento estético y plástico-tectónico, sino como expresión de las modificaciones a las que el paso del tiempo ha sometido a uno y al otro, así como a la de nuestro juicio y nuestra conciencia de la belleza y significación de su papel en nuestras vidas y nuestras conciencias. Mitoraj ha recuperado El mito perdido de nuestro pasado cultural y nos lo ha presentado y representado de una forma extraordinariamente personal y sublime. Entre centenares de muestras aún se recuerdan las de los jardines de las Tuileries en París, los Mercados de Trajano en Roma y un proyecto de 2011 para Agrigento en Sicilia, donde instaló 17 esculturas en bronce, a lado de los restos arqueológicos de la Grecia antigua del Valle de los Templos. Sus personajes mitológicos, herederos del arte clásico, están diseminados por medio mundo.
