Celebrated annually worldwide on 22nd April, Earth Day focuses on the protection of the environment. Whether this is formally included in your school’s curriculum or not, it is certainly something about which all children should be taught. Here are five excellent ways to incorporate Earth Day into your ESL classroom, supporting the learning of English while encouraging your students to consider their impact on the world around them. Poster Making Making posters is a fantastic way to combine creativity with the use of the English language that they have acquired. Using our Earth Day vocabulary mats for the key words and phrases necessary, you could set your students the task of creating a poster to encourage others to do simple things to make a massive difference to the environment. In addition to the poster creation, you could expect the students to present and explain them to the rest of the class to challenge further. grab your free copy here Boom Cards We talk about Boom Cards a lot here at a Teachable Year, and that’s because they are so engaging for your students. Our FREE I Can Help the Earth pack contains cards that are not only easy to use (almost no preparation needed!), but they are also highly rated by many ESL classes. These cards work on tablets (including iPads), laptops and desktop computers. They are also self-marking, and you can track your students’ progress easily. These cards present students with a statement linked to an ecological issue. They need to consider it and then decide whether it helps the environment or not. Recycling Getting creative doesn’t always need to have any sort of writing incorporated into it for it to be a meaningful learning activity. Singing is one way of using talents to practise the spoken English language. We adore this recycling song called We Recycle (to the tune of Frère Jacques), which would be perfect for Earth Day. We recycle We recycle Yes, we do Yes, we do Caring for our planet Caring for our planet You should too You should too! In conjunction with this song, bring in some old packaging from home (or ask your students to), and use these to sort into things that can be recycled and things that can’t. Additionally, you could sort the recyclable items further into categories, such as glass, paper and metal. Vocabulary Activities and WorksheetsWhile we love activities where students can be up and about, moving around while they are learning, sometimes you need a quieter lesson for students to consolidate the vocabulary they have learnt. Our extensive vocabulary pack will be perfect for that scenario. With 25 worksheets that require absolutely no preparation except printing, you can be confident that we have something for everyone’s needs here. From labelling activities to sentence writing, your students will be able to show off their ESL learning linked to Earth Day easily. Flashcards Our FREE flashcards pack is the ideal accompaniment for your Earth Day lesson planning. Entitled Go Green, this pack comprises both colour and black and white versions of 36 flashcards. While they could be used to build up children’s vocabulary, they could also be used in a more structured way. Provide your class with a sentence starter, such as To help the environment, I could... Additionally, they could also provide advice to others using a similar structure. Considering the importance and significance of our actions on the world around us is a key thing to learn early in life. Discussions could be had around which would have the biggest positive impact. In conclusion, teaching about Earth Day in the ESL classroom is a great opportunity for students to learn about their environment and how to take care of it. By utilizing hands-on activities such as creating Earth Day art projects or playing interactive ESL games, students can gain knowledge about environmental topics and also have fun at the same time. Through meaningful discussion and engaging activities, students will be able to learn more about our beautiful planet and why it is so important to care for it. grab your free copy here

Nursing is one of the noblest and important professions out there. It is believed that nursing has been around since 300 A.D. These selfless people have been taking care of us like we were their own ever since. I think we can agree nurses do not get enough credit for what they do every day. We can thank Florence Nightingale for advocating in the 1850s for sanitary living conditions for patients, drastically lowering fatalities associated with infections. In 1860, she opened a nursing school that paved the way for education that has since morphed into modern-day nursing. Ever dreaded going to work because it’s a full moon? Have you had to clean up bodily fluids without any thanks? Did you ever drink so much coffee during your night shift that you felt like you could power lift a hospital bed? Have you ever had a nurse who finally made you feel heard? They always seem to treat you with the perfect mixture of kindness and a little bit of tough love. If any of this rings true for you then this set is for you. Search for our Nurse Colored Pencil Set for the perfect gift bundle!

This book takes a close look at the essential elements consistently found in the structure, melodies and lyrics of all hit songs. The book highlights and analyzes the most common errors that are made when these key components are built into a song, so that new writers can try to avoid such mistakes in their own songs. Most writers have, at some stage, had to endure the hurt and disappointment of having songs rejected by music publishers or record companies, and ended up asking themselves: “Could I have done more to make my songs better?”. This book aims to help writers recognise any weaknesses in their songs, so that they can re-work them, make them stronger, and hopefully achieve the breakthrough that they’re striving for. The music industry has been going through major changes in recent years. It is now a ‘singles market’ again. As a result, there are now even greater opportunities for new writers capable of crafting potential hit songs with memorable melodies and lyrics. But competition is intense. So it’s more important than ever for writers to make sure their songs stand out from the pack by avoiding the traps and pitfalls that many inexperienced songwriters fall into. Written in an easy, non-technical style, the book identifies many frequent causes of songwriting problems - from common mistakes in basic song structure, to having the wrong mental attitude and an unsatisfactory songwriting environment. From getting the blend of core ingredients wrong, to flawed choices when it comes to titles, melodies, lyrics, hooks, choruses, intros, bridges, pre-choruses - and even the song demo itself. The book’s author, Brian Oliver - an experienced music publisher, songwriter and music consultant - warns that aspiring writers’ chances of success could be hampered if they fail to spend enough time polishing their songs and eradicating weaknesses in their songwriting. This book will help new writers to develop their own unique writing style while avoiding fundamental errors at each key stage in the song development process. It includes important tips on fixing and strengthening songs, along with a detailed checklist of 101 common mistakes that writers can measure their own songs against - no matter how ‘finished’ they think their songs are.

This file contains 12 mini Prefix Puzzles. The puzzles all have 3 pieces; one with a prefix printed on it, one with a base word, and a third with the meaning of the base word with the prefix added to it. The aim of the activity is for your students to work out which base words go with which prefix, to then ultimately discover what the prefixes 'un', 'dis', 're', 'im', 'in' and 'pre' mean. Also included is a Prefix 'Block' Puzzle. For this activity, students need to piece together the 16 'block' puzzle bits to match the prefixes with the base words that are on each of the blocks. The words on this puzzle contain a wide range of prefixes including 'extra', 'inter', 'tri' and 'anti'. In addition, there is a Suffix 'Block' Puzzle which works in the same way, however, students have to connect the base words with the suffixes on the block pieces. There are 2 copies of the puzzles in this file. One is in black and white and could be printed onto color paper. The other is a color version. To take a closer look at these puzzles, be sure to download the preview. Please note: this resource is also available in my Prefix and Suffix Mega Bundle. Please remember to rate this product and follow me, so I can keep you up to date with all my latest listings! Happy teaching, From The Novel Classroom
We recently had ice cream day for “i” day of our ABC countdown to summer. Instead of buying ice cream, I decided we would make our own. I knew it would be a great memory-making activity for my students, and *bonus!* we could tie-in a how-to writing to go with it. A couple tips: If you decide to try this (you really should!) don’t get too hung up on the kind of salt you use. I’ve make ice cream in bag plenty of times using plain table salt–but ideally, the
Rounding and estimation are often difficult concepts for students to grasp. My math curriculum allots one lesson to the two concepts - you can imagine this is not time for most students! Instead of teaching rounding within the estimation lesson, I separated the two concepts. We began by creating 100s lines and laminating them. Then using the worksheets included in this freebie my students were able to mater rounding before estimation, while also practicing estimation before solving estimation word problems. I recommend using 100s lines if possible when teaching this concept. You can see my class doing rounding in action by clicking here. Included in this freebie: 2 rounding worksheets 2 estimation worksheets 2 word problem worksheets Exit slip for rounding Exit slip for estimation Using these worksheets and the 100s line my students were able to become very confident in their ability to round and estimate. Nearly all of my students can now round in their head and no longer rely on the 100s line. I hope this method and these worksheets help your students or struggling student. Please let me know how these work for you by leaving feedback, I very much appreciate it! Cheers, Laura

This activity will provide plenty of social skills practice in conversations with a focus on responding and follow ups. It will teach your students that there are different ways to respond in conversations and give them plenty of follow up practice, all whilst playing a fun game! One issue during conversation practice that can often arise is that students will only think to ask questions in response. This will help your students to work on more meaningful and interesting conversation responses, rather than an "interview-like" structure that they can fall into when practicing this skill. No one wants to be interviewed! Also, our friends want to learn about our thoughts and what we have to say! It's not all about asking our friend questions keep the conversation flowing. This pack includes: 48x different conversation starter cones 48x generic follow up scoops divided into 6 types: - "Offer help or give advice" - "Share your own opinion" - "Say something nice/give a compliment" - "Share a similar feeling or experience" - "Ask a question" - "Show you are thinking about their feelings" (showing empathy) - Educator guide WHO IS THIS FOR? The following activity; ABC…"Energize Me” is a “high energy, fun and organized” classroom activity that gives your students a chance to move their bodies in a number of ways, while learning to recognize the Upper and Lower Case letters of the Alphabet. ABC…Energize Me does not require any equipment and can be used as a “Brain Break” or as a functional, letter recognition lesson. It can also be utilized in the gym or outside by a classroom or PE teacher if students need to move their bodies in a larger space. Do you struggle with handwriting?! If you are like me, then finding time alone may make you have anxiety... but, what's worse is the decline in handwriting! Did you know that handwriting is a motor memory skill? It's like walking, but if we aren't having kids practice it on a regular basis, they tend to forget how to form letters or form them incorrectly. This pack will help! Not to mention that if we want to have better writers, we need to have better HAND writers first! Handwriting FLUENCY is to writing as math fact fluency is to math! (or sight word fluency is to reading!) This packet includes MEDIUM handwriting lines. It is perfect for First Grade and possibly beginning of Second Grade for review. If you need smaller or larger lines, keep reading. What it includes: All uppercase and lowercase alphabet letters and one blank page for you to write letters that may not meet your specific handwriting program formation. Each page has an example for kids to "See it." Then they will "Trace it" on dotted examples. Next they will "Copy it" from looking at the letter above the line. Then they will cover up the top part of the page where they can't see the letters at all, or "Hide it" and will write the letter. Last, they will CLOSE THEIR eyes and write it! This is the fun part for my students. My students LOVE doing these worksheets and after initial instructions, they take very little time to complete and have a huge impact! *Disclaimer* The font used is not specific to any certain handwriting program. Many look similar, but in my opinion and experience, it's not writing the letter to the right program that is important. It's knowing how to form letters-and get that fine motor and motor memory under control. But, I do include a blank page that you could write those letters that are very specific to certain programs. ;) If you need different sized lines, check these out! **Yep, 120+ hand drawn vector arrows for you to use in all of your projects, commercial or personal.** (See Image #2 for all the arrows included) I'll be honest, I created this pack for myself to use on my own projects. Especially landing pages which require that call to action to be more than noticeable. I decided that others designers could use something similar. It's not that you can't create these yourself, but it saves a heck of a lot of time to just spend 5 bucks, get the arrows you need and be on your way. If you use them in just one project, they've more than paid for themselves. **So go ahead, grab 'em and start using them right now!** *Included:* - 120+ Hand Drawn Vector Arrows - EPS - AI - Hi-Res JPG & PNG (for Preview, I suppose you could slice them up for some odd reason) --- *The lines in the artwork are not in the deliverables, they are only for those that try to vectorize the arrows without purchasing :)*

This activity is connected to the CCGPS ELACCKL2a. Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I. This packet contains five pages. Each page has a simple story on it containing five sentences. The sentences are not written correctly. The first letter in each sentence is not capital and the ending punctuation is missing. Have your students rewrite each sentence correctly. Begin each sentence with a capital letter and add the correct ending punctuation. The sentences used contain frequently used sight words, decodable words that students should be able to read, and a few other common nouns that students see often. If you truly like making a traditional book, this project could become the front cover! Imagine putting pages of photos or other pages behind it! THERE IS VERY LITTLE PREP FOR THE TEACHER! This project is mostly printable and ready to go. Your students will do most of the work. It is for 2nd grade and up due to the cutting around flowers and the amount of writing. This would be a great project for a Hawaiian Day on your last week of school!!! You get: -boy and girl outlines -shirt template -flower templates with 6 printed prompts (Best Memory, Friends, Favorite Thing to Do in Class, My Proudest Moment, About My Teacher, and I Got Better at This...) The flowers will open so that your students have double the flower size to write on each prompt. -4 leaves for headband for boys and small flower for girls -BONUS- 6 shells in 2 different patterns with the same prompts as the flowers (You can mix and match them with the flowers or USE THEM INSTEAD OF FLOWERS FOR THE BOYS. They are not as large as the flowers, so writing space is smaller. (They may not have the same effect as what you see in the example.) -Detailed prep and craft directions YOU PROVIDE: crayons ( a must!), glue sticks, 12x9 colored construction paper THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED AS OF 5-6-15 to fix an 'E' that got dropped down a line.
