Do you want to create a preschool portfolio for the students in your classroom? Portfolios are a great way to demonstrate student progress over time. Here are some of my best tips to help you set up and organize preschool portfolios in your classroom.
This is a super lesson to try with your young artists - it takes just a bit of prep and the results are so fun! You'll need craft foam, model magic, glue, scissors, pipe cleaners and small pieces of tagboard or railroad board. The inspiration for this lesson comes from the blog, Plastiquem. Before class, I used Elmer's glue to attach a small chunk of model magic to a piece of 5x5" square of railroad board. Due to time constraints, I pre-cut a bunch of shapes from craft foam (students can totally handle this step, but we were short on time) and put a pile of pipe cleaners (fuzzy wires) in the middle of each table. I showed the kids how to gently press the foam shapes onto the fuzzy wires. I made sure to explain that this step takes some practice and is a challenge - a gentle press works just fine and the wire will push through the foam when it's ready - I haven't found the right terminology for it yet, but all the kids eventually got the technique. It's wonderful for practicing those fine motor skills, patience and persistence! I left things pretty open-ended as far as how many foam pieces to add, etc. and the kids just ran with the concept and had fun building their sculptures!!

Kindergarten artists created these special self-portraits to give their moms for Mother’s Day. The artists learned that a self-portrait is a drawing or painting of themselves. I love the innocence of Kindergarten drawings, and knew their moms would love their drawings too. I struggled with directing the students too much so all the portraits looked the same, but directing them enough so they would have success with their portraits. I decided to take the students through an exercise of exploring their faces and bodies so they did not miss any parts. We pulled our shoulders up to see what we would look like if we didn’t have a neck and they thought that would look pretty silly! We also discovered that our eyes are in the middle of our heads, not our noses. After exploring their bodies, students eagerly began drawing their portraits while adding their own unique touches. After the portraits were finished and the tissue paper backgrounds were added, their classroom teachers helped them write notes and Mother’s Day wishes to their moms around the border. . Hey everyone, and welcome to my first video post! I know, I know, it's 2019 and I need to get with the times. I just have a hang-up about hearing my own voice on video, but I'm learning to power through those feelings and "do it scared". I wrote a post a while back about using my escape rooms with early childhood, but I've since realized that I could explain it even better with a video. Sound like something you would like to try with your class? Find all of my escape rooms here! I have them for so many different skills, holidays, and seasons, and I'm adding more all the time. They really are a fun way for kids to learn or review content. Here's what some teachers have had to say after using some of my escape rooms: "The kids wanted to play again!" --Carolyn P. "My students were so engaged and had so much fun doing this! --Miss Rieger "So fun! The students looked forward to the activity each day!!!" --Jennifer T. "Amazing! My students were so excited for each clue." --Rachel E. Still have questions about how this could work in your classroom? Drop me a comment or send me an email!
