My little ones and I have been having a blast together! We are loving and learning like crazy. I always start the first few weeks with a TON of bonding activities to help students get to know each other and form loving relationships. The classroom climate is THE most important thing to focus on (in my opinion) to have a successful year together! Teaching my kiddos to have empathy and treat one another with kindness and respect is first thing! When I saw this perfect idea on Cara's wonderful blog "The First Grade Parade", I knew I had to make it my own and do it with my tiny tots. We began by reading the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. I explained that we were going to read a story that shows how very important it is to treat one another with love and kindness. I held up a large heart cut-out and explained that each of us has a heart and our heart's hold all of the good feelings and love that we have. We were pretending that the heart was Chrysanthemum's heart. As we read the story, the kid's passed it around and every time someone said something hurtful to Chrysanthemum, we crumbled her heart a little more. This showed how our hearts are feeling when we get our feelings hurt. At the end of the story, the other characters say much nicer things to Chrysanthemum. The littles tried to smoother her heart back out now that she was getting some love back, but the damage was done and they quickly noticed that her heart did not look perfect. They realized that it is quite hard to fix a wrinkled heart, no matter how hard they tried! The moral of the activity was that the words they say to each other can leave hearts feeling sad long after we say them. We worked to heal her heart by bandaging it up! We glued the cute poem in the center as a reminder to choose our words carefully. I also made little bracelets for them to wear! I used strips of black construction paper as the bands :) We hung up the heart in our room as a reminder! You can download the heart poem and bracelets for FREE by clicking below! Hope you are having a relaxing weekend :) XO

One of the final things we study in 4th grade math is Geometry. By this point in the year, students brains are tired, folks. It’s about that time when we begin prepping students for the lovely end of the year tests, and we are all just.. well… TIRED. But hey.. the show must go on, […]

As an Activity Coordinator, I definitely know how it is to work under a budget and as a former teacher, I know how it is to work with practically no budget too! So I’ve compiled a short list (I’m sure I’ll add to as I think of them) of some free resources that any Activity Coordinator or Director can use. 1.http://www.supercoloring.com Website for drawing tutorials and printer friendly coloring sheets. The drawing tutorials in particular have been well received in my activities. 2.http://www.youtube.com Why is YouTube great? You can find literally almost any kind of videos. There are simulated travel videos, my group loves these, you can travel to so many places right from your seat! You can look up funny cat video compilations or Bob Hope jokes compilations. The caveat is there are not a lot of full length movies or tv shows on the platform, rather pieces of those movies or shows, because of copyright laws. However, you can find tons of videos of compilations of Audrey Hepburn or Frank Sinatra or whoever their favorite person is. There are also so many senior work out and exercise videos. 3. Local Library The local library is your friend! Most libraries offer movies to rent for free. I use them all the time, and it is great! It has cut down our entertainment budget by a lot. There are also lots of other resources like books on tape, listening centers, and some even have Mobile Book Buses that can come to your facility! 4. http://www.pinterest.com If you don’t already have a Pinterest account, you are truly missing out! It is free to set up and very easy to manage. It is basically an online idea board for you to “pin” ideas you like. It works as a search engine so it’s really easy to use. If you are planning a Kentucky Derby Party, just simply type that in the search bar and you will be almost overwhelmed with all the ideas available to you. I have several boards on my Love Laugh and Bingo Pinterest page that I use every month when planning my events so feel free to check them out for some ideas! 5. Readers Digest Magazine or their website http://www.rd.com I use the website for trivia material and just good stories to read over a coffee social or other themed event. Readers Digest also has a ton of family friendly jokes and funny short stories that my residents just love. They also have lots of health articles that I like to share at our monthly “Better Your Brain” talks. This is definitely a website you can get lost in, but it’s a winner through and through. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve needed to stall time because a speaker was late and used these jokes to lighten up the crowd. You will find countless uses for this website, no doubt. Hope you enjoy these free resources and I hope it makes your planning a little easier! If you have any free resources that you use, please share and comment them down below!! I’d love to hear them!
This is an incredibly easy lasagna recipe that I have been making for my family for nearly 30 years! I found it originally in the "Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook," but since then I've made my own simple variations.
These last couple months have been such a joy! I've been assisting a friend get a Sunday School program started for our growing church plant and we've decided to read through "The Jesus Storybook Bible" by Sally Lloyd-Jones through Zonder. Since we are still a small group, the age range is fairly wide: from three to ten. Finding projects to go along with the story has been a little trial and error, and a little bit of making projects up as I go! That's why I wanted to share this free printable I made up with you. I found the basic idea from "Hands On Bible Teacher", but was unable to locate any similar printable, so I sketched one out quickly and thought there may be someone else out there who could use the template The basic idea is that you color it in, then cut along the top and bottom of each level. Then, fold the stone layers forward and the rest backward to make the building stand out. I think this would work well for a pop-up book, too, if you'd be so inclined! Click on image below to open full sized. To finish off the time after story, prayer, and this pop-up page, I brought in all our foam blocks and the kids broke off into teams. The team to build the tallest tower in a set amount of time won! It seemed a good time was had by all and my son was even able to re-teach me what he had learned that morning, so we're going to call it a win! =) I hope someone else out there can put these ideas to use again, somewhere! And I would love to hear how it works for you!
