A sad event. For those who live in Newcastle, no explanation needed. For those who don't: the Hunter St mall and city centre of Newcastle has been struggling for years to compete with large, modern, indoor shopping centres that are situated away from the city. Retailers have been struggling for a long time now, and the closure of the only major department store in the city centre is predicted to pretty much doom the already struggling smaller businesses. The Hunter St David Jones was established in 1957. A beautiful old department store that installed Newcastle's very first (and very narrow!) escalators. Loads of memories for me were made in this store: from getting stuck in a high chair in the restaurant as a toddler, to shopping with my Mum as fourteen year old buying my very first skin care regime from the Clinique counter, to skipping school and browsing through the store with friends as a teenager, to stocking up on everything baby as a new mum-to-be. Good bye David Jones.
