I wanted to make a giraffe toy for my baby. I have a lot of batting to use up. So I did a quick google search for a giraffe template. I really didn't like any I saw so I drew one myself. It was a lot harder than I thought! haha. This one was after I've given up after 3-4 failed ones. Whatever. It wasn't going to be perfect anyway.... I also have lots of fat quarter pieces laying around. I love these because they're perfect for smaller projects like this! SUPPLIES: Fabric Batting Ribbons Scissors Sewing Machine and thread DIRECTIONS: I folded the fat quarter pieces into 4 layers (to make 2 giraffes) from each fat quarter. Lay the template on and trace or pin to fabric. My craft room is a MAJOR mess so I couldn't find my fabric pen. So... I just pinned it and cut around it slightly bigger for seam allowance. With the right side of the fabric together, pin ribbons in between the two pieces. The below photos are just to show you what it looks like inside because you'd want to pin them all together. When you pin them all together, it'll look like this: Sew around leaving space (about an inch) to flip inside out. I used a pencil to push all the corners out. So I left the bottom portion open to stuff it with batting. After stuffing it, the opening was hand sewn shut (I hate doing this part) and it looked horrible. Oh well. When I worked on the second giraffe, I left the front open and did a much better job (still bad though)!

This sweet baby quilt is Shelly’s and the pattern is by Annie Brady Designs and can be found to purchase here. The pattern is called Big Bear and the fabric collection is Big Sky by Moda. Shelly asked for my free hand wood grain quilting and it really suited it so well! I used off white So Fine thread and Quilters Dream Blend batting. Today I received my Blog Book in the mail from Blog2Print. This is something I have done every year since I started my blog back, in 2009, so I have a hard copy of my blog since the beginning of my longarm career.

So you may remember my monsters a few posts ago? I’ve finished! I thoroughly enjoyed the making of it but I must admit, I had some angst in the setting of my blocks. I had a picture in my head, and it just looked awful. I had planned to cut a whole swag of 3” squares and sash them around the blocks. But when it came down to it, it looked just toooooo bright. I’d tried a few sashings, and the further I went on with it the more wrong it became. I must admit it doesn’t look so bad online, but the real life version was wayyyyyy too bright. So I unpicked it all and sulked for a while. Then I went over to the next town (150 kilometres away) where I could buy fabrics and I brought one fat quarter of each bright fabric plain I could find. And then I sashed each block with a different colour. And hey presto, it actually worked! I have fallen totally in love with this quilt, and though my brother has asked for it for his son, I may not part with it. It’s one of the few I’ve actually finished! I think I probably will give it to my delicious six month old nephew for Christmas this year though, so I will have it for a few months. It’s a bit difficult to see here, because I’ve artfully cropped out the exact part of the quilt I wanted to show you, but can you see the binding? I couldn’t find a colour that matched how I wanted it to, so I sewed 3” strips together and made a matchy matchy one. And it was a buggar of a thing to do (*scuse my language) but I think it was totally worth it. So there you go, my dears. A lovely new quilt. I am quietly thrilled to bits with it. Hope your quilting days are going well. Suzie

These are quilts 3 & 4 from the Sugarland Fall Festival. Meet Seashore Rails, the simplest rail fence pattern. This is the pattern I pick when I do not want to think, when I do not have the patience to measure once, leave alone twice, when I do not want to cut fabric. Seashore Rails This is the holy grail (and the savior) for all those (me included) who like the concept of handmade but may not always have the nine yards of patience. Take two strips of color, one strip of white. Stitch them along the length, with the white in the middle. Cut into squares. Voila, you have your blocks!!! Black Border, Green Binding Arrange your blocks - one horizontal and one vertical, add a border to make it all come together and you have a quilt top!!! When Eleanor Burns said - Quilt in a Day, I am sure this is what she meant. I chose this mushroom fabric for the backing. Do you like Mushrooms? I had to choose easy and quick patterns since I really cranked out 14 of these in four weeks (My craziness is now well-established). Therefore, choosing bright happy fabrics was really the key!!! Matching binding to both the front and the back was an essential ingredient in making the quilt appealing. I think the green binding in the front works only because it stands out against the black border, whereas it appears a bit blah next to the teal/aqua blocks. Quilted and Bound As far as the back, well that green really adds to the mushroom fabric, even if I say so myself (blush). Green Binding - Multicolored Shrooms!!! Can you see the quilting? Me neither. The blocks finish at 6", the quilt without borders is about 36" square and with 2.5" strips border added, it finishes at about 40" square. I quilted using a decorative stitch (looks like the letter C), making the appearance of clouds, as one line looked like Cs and the next being a mirror image. Ooh, like a day at the Beach!!! And one more picture... Labelled!!! Once Seashore Rails was done, I had a few blocks leftover...leading to the next quilt - Jewel Box. Seashore Rails was definitely boyish. Therefore, I chose to add some non-blues (greens/purples) to make Jewel Box, so that it was a more gender-neutral quilt. Remember, while I am making these, I wanted an even split between boy and girl quilts, so that the quilts could appeal to all. Can you see the rail fence blocks in between the green and purple box blocks? I chose a bright purple border for Jewel Box, to highlight the purple and take the attention away from the teal/aqua blocks. However, the exact same green binding works against the purple too. Happy coincidence, indeed. Ok, are you ready for this? This is big and scary!!! Backing - Funny and Colorful!!! And see, the green binding works beautifully with the backing too. The quilting gods were smiling upon me! Quilted the same way as Seashore Rails. Jewel Box also finished at about 40" square. Finally, I can see some quilting in this picture. Scary & Adorable Did you think that I forgot the label? No, I am too vain for that. Labelled! OK, just one more picture. Can you see the cloud effect quilting in the picture below? Looks like this monster is peeping from behind the wall to yell - BOO!!! BOOtiful!!! I will be linking up with Let's Bee Social, Needle & Thread Thursday, Whoop Whoop Fridays, Link a Finish Friday, Thank Goodness Its Finished Friday, Finish it up Friday and Monday Making. I hope these simple patterns and bright fabrics bring some measure of joy and inspiration to your day. Your bright comments definitely bring joy to mine!!!

I finally sewed with my machine!!! Not that what I did was particularly exciting but it's something...right? While at Quilt Festival back in November I picked up a set of 9 degree circle wedge rulers from Doheny Publications. I finally made some time on Saturday to try one of them out. I chose the Mini #1 Ruler to start out along with the leftover scraps from my Spiderweb quilt. Here's the ruler. And here is the results. I'm pretty please with it. It is approximately 18 1/2" in diameter. When I find time I'll applique it to a background and it'll become a small wallhanging or maybe a baby quilt for an NICU our guild regularly donates to. Now for the less exciting. I spent Sunday making half square triangles. They are for Miss Rosie's Heartland quilt. The log cabins are done and just waiting for the half square triangles...all 600 of them. I know! After making my Ocean Waves quilt, 600 half square triangles should be a breeze...right? Yes. But I can still whine about it while I do it. I'm half square triangled out. So what have you been up to?
Základ tvoří bílá a doplňuje ji růžová a tyrkysová.

So I’ve been trying to finish all the UFO’s in the cupboard (there is no hope – there are just too many) and finishing my monsters is high on the list. You may remember the original monster quilt (see it here if you want to refresh). When I stitched it, I just blindly appliqued lots of very cute monsters just because I liked them. I gave no thought to actual maths, or how they would work in a quilt. Consequently, I had lots of blocks left over that wouldn’t fit in the original – the maths just wouldn’t go. So, to use the all up, I made another monster quilt. Tadah! Half of these were already stitched, I also needed to make a few more. Happily, there are millions of little monsters all over the internet, or in colouring in books. The tricky part was not actually finding the designs, it was deciding when to stop. But stop I did, and I made this quilt over the last few months. + I do think that last one is my favourite. So all in all, I think my two monster quilts have worked rather well. I’m not sure anyone needs two monster quilts in their stash, so I’ll most likely give one away. But for a little while, I will keep them here at home. The only downside is that I STILL have all these blocks leftover that didn’t fit. I’ve decided that I will not make another monster quilt (I’m almost totally sick of the monsters….). I think I will use some of these guys on the back of the quilt, and I’m going to make some library bags or something as gifts. And then me and the monsters – we will be done! Suzie
