I have really gotten dorky these days! I think being 37 weeks pregnant has made me a bit obsessive; so I have been safely taking out these obsessive tendencies on sewing projects. I have made outfits for Baby Boyd, embroidered his burp cloths (yes, I know that it's stupid to embroider things that the kid is going to barf all over but, hey, I get bored on Sundays), and to top it all off I decided that it would be a brilliant idea to make a hospital delivery gown so that I can look super preppy and way too excited on d-day. I had never even heard of this idea until Tyler and I went to Austin and saw a woman selling some super cute/super expensive ones at a street fair. I had found my next challenge. When we got home I did a little googling and came across this pattern. Sorry for the not so flattering photo! I'm 9 months preggo, remember?! I used the pattern but took everyone's advice and made the following alterations: added 6 inches to the length cut 2 "right sides" for the back instead of a left and right to make sure I had plenty of fabric to cover my rotund buttocks used snap tape instead of buttons on the shoulder used bias tape on all seams instead of hemming skipped the pocket directions and added my own pocket below the hip It ties at the top, inside left, outside right, and bottom (not tied in this pic and probably not necessary). Snaps at the shoulder for feedings..just like the normal hospital gowns. Here is the breakdown of materials: 2.75 yards fabric 3 packages of double fold bias tape 1 package of snap tape 2 rolls of ribbon (one thicker for around my waist and one thinner for ties) The project took me about 2 days start to finish and is by no means perfect but it was fun to make. So thank you "uuber preppy, over the top, and far too brightly colored" hospital gown for taking my mind off of my impending life change for a few hours! It's all about the small things in life!
Pattern - Girls La Bella Donna Top & Tunic 2T - 16 Skill Level - Beginner Fabric - l'oiseau fabrics Skills - working with panels, snap tape A friend whose granddaughter is undergoing cancer treatment asked me to make a special gown for the little girl to wear – something that would help lift her spirits. I had exactly the right knit panel from l’oiseau fabrics on hand – flowers, cherubs, fawns – all things that Nana and granddaughter found special. Nana said that it must be easy to put on and take off. It must be accessible for IV. It must be loose enough for comfort, but not fall off her shoulders. After some consultation with fellow sewist, Eleri Kieran, we decided that La Bella Donna was the perfect pattern. I cut two fronts from the pattern (so that the gown could be worn with the open side wherever it was needed) and serged one shoulder and side seam. Snap tape would secure the other shoulder and side seam. I didn’t bother with the sleeve band as the idea was to keep the gown as simple as possible. To prepare the open side for the tape, I folded back the sleeve and bottom hems and stitched them in place with my sewing machine. I applied the snap tape with the holes first. I lined it up with the edge of the fabric and stitched it in place using a zipper foot stitching both sides of the tape. I pinned the matching tape in place and stitched it just on the edge, then folded it under and stitched it down. This hides the tape away. A little tidying away of stray threads and trimming of raw edges and it was done. This encourages me to think that whatever the obstacles, comfortable and beautiful clothing can be made for any situation. And perhaps Nana’s sweet panel choice will provide a tiny bit more help for a little girl to beat back cancer. Here is my pattern for a hospital gown. Click here to download pattern Please use this pattern for private use only, not for retail. This pattern is copyrighted by me, Read Creations. Make sure you have page scaling set to none ! Instructions on how to make the gown (all seams are 1/4") Cut out all pattern pieces and tape together part A and B along the blue line, same for part C with D. Cut 1 piece on fold of part A/B (the front) and 2 pieces of part C/D (the back). Then follow the sewing instructions below. 1. Sew shoulders together 2. Double hem both sleeves 3. Double hem back centers 4. Cut 20" of 1/4"double folded bias tape 5. Find center in front gown piece (A) and center of bias tape, mark each with a needle 6. Fit bias tape on neck opening matching the two needles (your bias tape should be centered on neck and about 5" should extend on either side for tying the gown) 7. Sew bias tape on 8. Sew both sides together 9. Double hem bottom You are done !!! Now the wrist band 1. Print the doll's name and birth date in font size 6 or 7 (I used 6) 2. We have an extra special free pattern to share with you today! It is a feel-good sew that is so needed! This idea came to me months ago when we were having our virtual fair contest to donate items to a children's hospital.When all of the entries came in the mail, I had an extra large box full of donation items from one of our testers, Jeannie Olson. Inside the box she had included several hospital gowns, g-tube pads, and handmade blankets to donate for children at the hospital. I was so touched! I later learned that Jeannie uses her own pattern for the hospital gowns, and now she has graciously agreed to share this pattern on our blog for everyone who can benefit from it! In a moment I will share the link to download Jeannie's pattern for free. It has all the instructions and pattern pieces included in a PDF pattern. But before that, I want to share with you one of Jeannie's main motivations for the love behind her work. This is Jeannie's little boy Paxten and you might recognize him from our website! He's a handsome little guy modeling his polo that Jeannie made for him. What you don't know from the picture though, is that Paxten has some health struggles and spends quite a bit of time in the hospital. He is so brave! For each of Paxten's long visits at the hospital, his mom tries to make him a new gown for every day he will be there, to make it special. Here are the latest: Isn't she amazing?! Of course Jeannie feels like it's the least she can do for her little boy. As hard as it is, I love this picture so much. Boys need to play. <3 Over the years Jeannie has had a lot of experience with what does and doesn't work with hospital gowns, and that's why her pattern is so fabulous! She recommends using plastic snaps on the shoulders, both for kids' comfort and so they can wear the gown into radiology (most of the time). The coverage of her gown style is fantastic in back too, with safe ties in the perfect places. This style is super cute and it even allows them to play a bit! Here is Paxten just a couple days ago, on his latest visit. He let Mom interrupt his Legos just long enough to get a picture for us. What a great kid! Are you ready to make some hospital gowns too? I'm sure children at local hospitals would love to have donations from you in fun fabrics, and of course we never know when our own children or friends might benefit from this labor of love. The pattern pieces Jeannie provided for us come in five sizes: 12/18m, 3T, 4/5, 7/8, and 10/12. We have tested each of these sizes to make sure they sew up easily and that the fit of each will be great. Note: If you need a size that is larger or smaller than this, you may be able to print the pattern pieces at a larger or smaller percentage. (We don't recommend that with most patterns, but for this style the fit does not need to be precise.) Last March, I participated in a service activity and as part of that activity, we made simple medical dolls and hospital gowns to fit those dolls. As I was making them, I realized they are the perfect size for an American Girl doll. HERE is the link to that pattern; go to "Items to make" then to "Medical Play Dolls" and then to "Doll Gown Pattern". This is a super easy sewing project and can be made in around 15 minutes. Supplies needed: scrap of fabric about 9 inches wide x 20 inches long (I used flannel) coordinating thread a package of double folded bias seam tape Cut out the pattern. Sew the shoulder seams together. Sew seam tape to the sleeves. Sew side seams together. Sew seam tape to the back around to the hem. Sew seam tape to the neck leaving around 7 inches to tie the gown closed. That's it. You're finished - you could also make one of THESE clipboards and then add a few medical charts to that clipboard. Hospital Gown I wanted to try myagdollcraft Hospital Gown. I found a housecoat at the second hand store, cut it apart, laid my pattern on the sleeves and cut it out. I followed her instructions however, I did cut my bias 30” instead of 20” – just thought it would be easier for little fingers to tie it. Sew shoulders together with ¼” seam allowance. Hem both sleeves with ½” seam allowance. Hem back centers with 1/2” seam allowance. Cut 30" of 1/4"double folded bias tape. Find center in front gown piece and center of bias tape, mark each with a needle. Fit bias tape on neck opening matching the two needles (your bias tape should be centered on neck and about 10" should extend on either side for tying the gown). Sew bias tape on. Sew both sides together. Hem bottom with 1/2” seam allowance. If I was to make this again, I would add ¼” onto the neckline so it fit a little tighter around the neck – that’s just my preference tho. Hospital Arm Cast I found a tutorial for this cast HERE. Thought it would go perfect with my hospital gowns. Cut one piece of white flannel and one piece of white craft felt each 3″ x 4.75″. With the flannel at the bottom and the felt on top, sew an X to hold them together. Cut six strips of white t-shirting into 3/4″ widths by about 6” long. Stitch the strips on your flannel/felt sandwich. The strips should be sewn the long way. Don’t sew all the strips down in neat, straight lines. Overlap them, and let a few of them go wonky to look like bandages wrapped around the arm. From the wrong side, stitch around the outside with a small zigzag to prevent fraying. Trim edges flush with the ‘sandwich'. I made myself a cardboard template, mark a dot roughly 5/8″ from the top and 1″ from one side, placed it on my cast and then traced and cut a small 1/2″ square around that dot. This will be for the doll’s thumb. Zigzag around the hole two times to finish the edges. Cut about 3″ of Velcro in half lengthwise to make a long skinny strip. Stitch the Velcro strips to the short sides of the cast but remember to stitch one strip to the top side of the cast and the other to the back side. I will leave it up to Olivia to ‘sign’ the cast with a fine point Sharpie permanent marker if she desires. Hospital Slippers For these, I cut a 3/4”wide x 4” long piece of fleece fabric and sewed 4.5” long of 1/8” elastic in the center. Fit the fabric to the doll’s feet and glued a fleece sole to it. Glued a foam sole to the bottom of that. X-Ray Tutorial Myagdollcraft also has a great idea for an x-ray! 1. Go to google and look for X-ray pictures for an arm or leg or whatever you want. 2. Resize them so that the bones somewhat match the size of your American Girl Doll. You can use Microsoft Word or a similar computer program, they have rules for sizing. 3. Print. 4.
