My studio in Kent, England is surrounded by these Oast Houses so it made sense to design a working Teapot in their honour! The Oast House or Kiln House was an out building which dried the freshly picked hops harvest before going on to the beer making process. Many people and indeed families spent the summer earning extra money picking hops during the season . Nowadays the Oast Houses are generally converted and privately owned and make quirky homes! I modelled this originally as a solid plaster model and then made plaster piece moulds ready for the slip casting process( liquid clay) size approx 25cm high by 16cm wide by 16 cm deep.

The images from across Britain show just how many jobs have been lost to technology and changing attitudes. For instance pillow lace making (pictured) has died out over the years.
