Name: Thomas Kane Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 6 August 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-53-Thomas Kane The Shields Daily Gazette for 9 August 1904 reports: Thomas Kane, 16, 60 Brunswick Street, South Shields was charged at North Shields today with stealing on the 5th inst. a pony, a set of harness and a cart, valued at £12 5s from the Fish Quay, the property of J. Foster. Joseph Foster, a cartman of Felling, said that at about one o’clock he took his cart to the east end of the Quay and there left it while he went to buy some fish. On returning a quarter of an hour later he missed it. Sergt. Proud spoke to receiving the prisoner into custody from the Blyth police on the 5th inst. and he also recovered the cart and pony. In answer to the charge, prisoner replied “Yes, I tried to sell it to a man on the road to Blyth, but he would not buy it”. The magistrates committed him to the next Quarter Sessions”. The Shields Daily Gazette for 21 October 1904 reports: “THEFT OF A PONY AND CART Thomas Kane (16) a miner, pleaded guilty to stealing a pony, set of harness and spring cart, the property of Joseph Forster, at the Borough of Tynemouth on August 5th. As accused was bound over about a year ago for a similar offence, he was sent to prison for three months”. Name: Margaret Leadbitter Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 16 August 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-35-Margaret Leadbitter The Shields Daily Gazette for 16 August 1904 reports: "At North Shields Margaret Leadbitter (12), 41 Wellington Street, was charged with stealing on August 11th, from the person of Sarah Moffott, while in Saville Street, the sum of 1s 2d, the money of Thompson Moffott, and further with stealing on the 6th inst from the person of Martha Ann Taylor, while in Linskill Street back lane, the sum of 2s, the money of Matthew Taylor. There was a third charge of stealing from the person which was not proceeded with. The evidence in both cases was similar, young children having been sent to perform errands by their parents and being robbed by the accused. She was arrested by Detective Thornton. The girl pleaded guilty to both charges and said that she would not steal any more. The mother said that the child had never been in any trouble of this kind before. The father was bound over in the sum of 40s to ensure his daughter's good behaviour for six months". Chief Constable Huish asked him if he would like to go to sea. The lad expressed his willingness, and at the request of Mr Huish he was remanded for a week. Wilson (16), labourer, Hudson Street, was charged with stealing a basket of haddocks, value 3s, the property of William Purdy, on the 7th inst. Ike Houghton, skipper of the steam trawler Wild Rose, said that at 8.45 yesterday morning he was standing on the quay watching the men landing the fish from the trawler, when he saw the prisoner take a basket of haddocks which had come out of the ship, carry it across the quay and place it behind another basket. Witness told him to take it back into its place and he did so, and witness the informed the police. PC Spindler proved the arrest. Prisoner pleaded guilty and had nothing to say. He was fined 10s and 10s costs, or fourteen days". Name: George Wilson Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 16 December 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-63-George Wilson The Shields Daily Gazette for 16 December 1904 reports: "At North Shields Geogre Wilson (17), a minor, was charged with stealing between the 13th and 15th inst. the sum of 3s, the moneys of his father Wm Wilson. Prosecutor said he resided at 15 Hudson St and the 13th inst. he placed three half-crowns and a shilling between the mattresses of the bed. On the following day he missed 1 s and yesterday he missed half a crown. He gave information to the police. Insp Thornton spoke to apprehending the prisoner in Geo. Street. Previous to this he saw him in Hudson Street and on seeing him (witness) approach the house he ran away. When charged with the theft he made no reply. On being searched 2s was found in his possession. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. The father, recalled, said there was nobody but his son in the house during those three days. He had had a good deal of trouble with the lad since his mother's death sixteen months ago. The Chairman (Ald. Collins): Where did you get the 2s? Prisoner: I worked for it on the Fish Quay. The Chief Constable said that on the 26th of last month Wilson was bound over for six months at South Shields for theft. The magistrates committed him to prison for one month". James Speedy, a carpenter employed by the firm, that he missed the brass tap produced and a barrel from the works. He saw both the defendants on the premises. PC Brown deposed to arresting the two defendants. Brown denied all knowledge of the larceny but Sayers admitted it, and told Brown to tell the truth and not make it any worse than it was. Previous convictions were put in against Brown, who was committed for one month, and Sayers who made his first appearance was charged 10s and costs". Name: Andrea Laudano Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 21st July 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-63-Andrea Laudano The Shields Daily Gazette for 8 August 1904 reports: "At North Shields, Andrea Laudino, Italian ice cream vendor, was charged with stealing a pony, value £8, the property of Bernardo Bianci, between the 13th and 19th of July. Prosecutor said that he was an ice cream vendor, and on the night of the 18th ult. he fastened up his pony in a stable in Upper Camden Street. Next morning he found that the stable and hay loft doors had been broken down, and the pony taken away. He had dismissed the prisoner from his employ five weeks previously. Chas. Campbell, Ponteland, deposed to purchasing the pony from the prisoner for £2. The man told him that the ice cream trade was bad and he wanted to get out of the country. PC Lishman deposed to arresting the prisoner, who pleaded guilty, and Detective Thornton spoke to recovering the pony with the prisoner's assistance. Accused stated that the prosecutor owed him 35s, and he took repayment by selling the pony for £2. He was committed to take his trial at the Quarter Sessions". The Morpeth Herald and Reporter, 22 October 1904 reported from the Northumberland Quarter Sessions trials: "Andrea Laudeno (28) ice cream vendor, pleaded guilty to stealing a pony from Bernando Branchi at Tynemouth on July 19th - One month". Sadly this wasn't to be Laudano's last brush with the law. The Shields Daily News for 2 September 1905 reports: "Andrea Laudano (28), an Italian, was remanded for eight days on a charge of stealing from a house in Grey's Yard, Bird Street, on the 19th ult. a shirt and a pair of boots of the value of 7s 6d, the property of Phillip Tomaselli". The Shields Daily News for 15 February 1906 reports: "LARCENY OF BOOTS AT NORTH SHIELDS. TWO WOMEN SENT TO PRISON At the North Shields Police Court this morning before Dr Peart and Mr J. B. Williamson, Elsie Newlands (22) and Margaret Harker, alias Carr (28), of no fixed abode, were severally charged with stealing, on the 11th ult, from a shop door, situate at 25 Saville Street West, two pairs of boots of the value of 13s 10d, the property of the Realization Boot Company. The manager of the prosecutor's shop stated that on the 18th ult, about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, he observed the two pair of blutcher boots hanging outside the door. At 5 o'clock the same afternoon witness missed the boots, which he valued at 13s 10d. The pair of boots produced by the police was one of the pairs taken from the shop door. George Stewart, manager for Mr C. D. Merkel, pawnbroker, Clive Street, said the woman Newlands came to his master's place of business and offered a new pair of boots in pledge. Observing that they had not been worn, and his suspicions being aroused, he questioned the woman as to where she got them. She said they belonged to her friend's husband and witness told her to go and bring the friend in. Newlands then left the shop and later returned with the other prisoner and a man. The latter two bore out Newlands' story, but witness did not believe them, and declining to advance anything upon the boots detained them and subsequently gave information to the police. PC Radcliffe. a plain clothes officer, deposed to going to Stockton and receiving the first prisoner - Newlands - into custody. On charging her with the offence she replied, "I only tried to pledge the boots for the other woman." That morning witness proceeded to Durham and apprehended the other woman on her release from gaol there, and bringing her to North Shields placed her alongside Newlands and then jointly charged them with the offence. Newlands said "No, we are not guilty of that, are we?" The other replying, "No, we are not." The accused had been acting together at Stockton, and lived together in common lodging houses at North Shields. The Chief Constable (Mr John H Huish) said Newlands made her first appearance before the magistrates as far as he knew, but belonged to a bad school. The other woman made her 41st appearance, having been convicted at Stockton, Middlesbrough, South Shields and Newcastle for various offences. Stansfield, Margaret Harker, Normanby, and Janet Sanderson, Newcastle, were charged on demand with having stolen from the person of Joseph Conaty, 6d and a pot of rum on the 13th inst. Prosecutor, who is a shipwright living at No. 2 Reed Street, stated that at 11.15 pm on the date named he was in Bedford Street, near to the Tiger Stairs, when he was accosted by the two women who asked him to get with them. They went to a room in Liddell Street and after he had given them each 1s they knocked him about, went through his pockets, and took 6d and a pot of rum. Later he was kicked downstairs by a man and upon getting outside he saw some police officers and informed them of what had occurred. PC Graham and Sergt. Wilson spoke to finding one of the women crouching in a recess in the yard of a house in Liddell Street. Accused pleaded not guilty. The magistrates taking into consideration the fact that they had been in custody for some time, committed them only for one day. Margaret Harker, in conjunction with Robert Jackson and Thos. Bell, were charged with loitering in Liddell Street, supposed for the purpose of committing a felony, on the 13th inst. PC Graham and Sergt. Wilson gave evidence in support of the charge. Chief Constable Huish said he had made enquiries concerning the accused and had found that they had all been convicted for larceny. Harker made her 47th appearance, Thos. Bell his 6th appearance and Jackson his 8th appearance. The last named had been imprisoned for shop-breaking and robbery with violence. Prosecutor stated that he lived in New York, and on the night in question he saw the defendant running away from his house with two ducks in his possession. Witness gave chase and defendant dropped a duck and a drake. He caught him and brought him back to his house, where he gave him into custody. PC Brown deposed to receiving defendant into custody and afterwards finding the two ducks produced behind a hedge. Fined 40s including costs". The Shields Daily News for 14 February 1905 reports: "THEFT FROM PENNY-IN-THE-SLOT METERS At North Shields Police Court to-day, before the Mayor and Mr J. Walton, Edward Roberts (19), messroom steward, Blyth and John Dowson (19), seaman, Wallsend, were charged with having stolen on the 30th ult. from an automatic gas meter at 33 Thrift Street the sum of 14s 8d, the moneys of the Tynemouth Gas Company. Mrs Cowey said that on the 30th ult. she was removing into the house when the accused came and asked to be allowed to look through. She told them the house was not to be let. In passing through one of the rooms Dowson put his hand on the gas meter and remarked it was very handy. They went away and next day witness found that the gas meter had been broken into and the box and money taken away. George Robson, a collector for the Gas Company said he had examined the meter and found that gas had been consumed to the value of 14s 8d. Sergt Hall said he arrested the accused in a lodging house on the 6th inst. He took them to the Bull Ring Police Station and charged them with the theft. They both replied: "Yes, that's right". There was a second charge against the prisoners of stealing from a gas meter at 37 Blyth Street, Percy Main, the sum of 2s 4d, the moneys of the Tynemouth Gas Company, between February 3 and 4. Similar evidence was given in this case. The accused, having obtained permission, were shown over the house and subsequently the money in the meter was missed. The prisoners admitted the charge and said that if the magistrates would allow them to go they would refund the money. Chief Constable Huish said he had only preferred two charges against the accused, but there were six or eight others. The prisoners were committed to gaol for 14 days in the second division for each offence - one month in all. The time spent in prison didn't deter Dowson and Roberts. Just over a month later The Shields Daily News for 18 March 1905 reported: "FOUND ON ENCLOSED PREMISES AT NORTH SHIELDS. SUSPICIOUS CHARACTERS SENT TO PRISON. At the North Shields Police Court this morning before Mr Isaac Black (in the chair) and Mr G.H. Stansfield - John Dowson (19), Gateshead and Edward Roberts (19), 53 Beaumont Street, Cowpen Quay, were charged on remand with being found on the enclosed premises of 9 Seymour Street, for an unlawful purpose, at 5 pm on the 16th inst. Both of the accused had been previously convicted of breaking into unoccupied houses and stealing money from gas meters, and they came out of prison as recently as Monday last. Mr Isaac Black (the chairman) said they had soon commenced again and as their recent imprisonment seemed to have been no caution to them, they would each be committed for six weeks with hard labour". Name: John Stewart Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 24 August 1914 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-254-John Stewart The Shields Daily News for 26 August 1914 reports: “THEFT OF DUCKS AND HENS. MIDNIGHT VISIT TO BALKWELL FARM. Today at North Shields, John Stewart (35), miner, Hedley’s Buildings, New York, was charged with stealing between Aug. 22 and 23 from North Balkwell Farm three ducks, three chickens and one hen, valued 18s, the property of Wm. James. Prosecutor stated that he locked the hen-house on the 22nd and on the morning of the 23rd he missed the ducks and hens. He later found the head of one hen under a straw stack. PC Yellowley, New York, said that at 12.30am on the 23rd he saw the defendant coming from the North Balkwell Farm. Witness' suspicions were aroused by defendants clothing being bulky and on searching him he found a bass bag, containing a duck and a chicken which were later identified by the proprietor. Det. Mason said he received defendant into custody from the Earsdon police and defendant replied to the charge, “All I got was the duck and chicken, which I had when arrested”. The album doesn’t record the details of each prisoner’s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest. In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ‘Shields Daily News’ looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot. Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time. The Shields Daily News for 28 July 1905 reports: “THEFT FROM SMITH’S DOCK. THREE NORTH SHIELDS MEN SENT TO PRISON. At North Shields Police Court today, Robert Smith (48), fireman, 9 Middle Street, Milburn Place; John Curry (39), 25 Front Street, and James Curry (35), 3 West Street, Milburn Place, marine store dealers, were charged on remand with having stolen from Messrs Smith’s Pontoon Dock, on the 25th inst., a quantity of brass valued at £4 17s 1d. John Craigie, foreman fitter with the prosecutors, said that on the morning of the 26th inst. he went into the engine room of the pontoon and missed a quantity of brass. In the afternoon of the same day he accompanied an officer to No.25 Front Street, Milburn Place, and there identified a portion of the stolen metal. James C. Smith, store keeper with Messrs Smith’s Dock Coy. Ltd, said that on the morning of the 26th inst. He missed a quantity of brass, and afterwards went to the Central Police Station. He was there shown a quantity of brass, which he identified as the property of Messrs Smith. The total weight of the metal was 116 lbs and the value was $4 17s 1d. Joseph Garrick, a rigger and stevedore, said that on the 25th inst, he saw Smith and James Curry go into the Aberllelyn Arms in Front Street, Milburn Place. At a late hour on the same night he saw Smith go over the wall of Messrs Smith’s premises, enter the engine room and afterwards leave with a bag of metal. He gave information to the police. PC Cuerton said that at 11.40pm on the 25th inst. he saw John Curry go into his house and at midnight he saw his brother leave the house and walk in the direction of his own. Detective Sergt. Scougal said that at noon on the 26th inst. he went to the house of John Curry with a search warrant and found underneath the bed a quantity of brass, which was identified as the property of Messrs Smith by the witness Craigie. He then proceeded to No. 9 Middle Street, where he saw Smith. He told him he was going to take him to the Bull Ring Police Station, whereupon his wife said: “What’s the matter, Bob?”. Accused replied: “There has been some brass stolen from Smith’s”. Witness charged him with having stolen the brass, and he replied: “I know nothing about it”. At five o’clock the same afternoon he met the two Currys in the Borough Road and told them he was going to take them to the Bull Ring Police Station. They both replied: “It is only a bit of spite because we would not do the same as him”. The following morning he charged the three of the prisoners with the theft. Smith replied: “I have nothing to say”. John Curry replied: “We got the best part of the brass from the saw mills, We only got two small pieces from Smith and gave him a couple of bob for them”. James in answer to the charge said they got most of the metal from the saw mills. Formally charged, the whole of the prisoners pleaded guilty. Mr G.R. Duncan, who represented the accused, said that Smith, who could produce discharges covering a period of twenty years, showing an excellent character, had been employed for some time as a fireman by the prosecuting firm. Unfortunately, having got some drink, he yielded to the temptation while working on the night shift, and in consequence had lost his situation. Both he and his wife were most distressed about it. The two Currys were licensed marine store dealers bearing good characters. The Chairman said the case was too serious to be dealt with under the First Offenders’ Act and the amount involved was too large to permit of a fine being imposed. The prisoners would each be committed for a month". This may not have been Curry's last brush with the courts. The Shields Daily News for 15 November 1907 reports: "WIFE ASSAULT. James Curry, a young man, was summoned for having assaulted his wife on the 9th inst. Complainant said that on the date in question her husband came home drunk and without receiving provocation badly used her, blackening one of her eyes. He was frequently drunk and whenever he was in that condition he ill-treated her, using pokers, chairs and anything else he could lay his hands on. She had him before the magistrates nine years ago and she had then only been seven months married. Defendant promised to behave himself better in future. The Chairman (Coun. Addison) severely repromanded the dfendant in imposing a fine of 10s and costs or 14 days." Jones Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 15 September 1914 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-254-Charles S Jones The Shields Daily News for 21 September 1914 reports: “LARCENY FROM CLOTHES LINE. NORTH SHIELDS DEFENDANT COMMITTED TO PRISON. Today at North Shields, Charles Jones, no fixed abode, was charged with stealing a shirt, valued 2s, from a clothes line, on Sept. 14th, the property of Sarah Scott. Mrs Scott said the shirt was hanging on the line in Middle Street, where she resided. She was told something by a neighbour and later missed the shirt. Another witness said she noticed a vacant place on the clothes line and informed Mrs Scott. PC Pallister said he apprehended defendant, who on being searched, was found to be wearing the missing shirt under his own. A second charge of a similar nature was preferred against defendant, who was charged with stealing a shirt, valued 2s, the property of Mary Poolton, Queen Victoria Street. Jennie Cowey, Queen Victoria Street said she watched the defendant while in Queen Victoria Street and saw him go into Mrs Poolton’s yard. She walked past the door and saw defendant buttoning his coat. There were clothes hanging on a line in the yard. PC Pallister said he charged defendant with the theft and he replied “I don’t know whether I got it or not”. Defendant, who pleaded guilty, made his 17th appearance and had been previously convicted in Sunderland and Middlesbrough for larceny. The Bench committed him to prison for one month in each case”. THEFT AT CHIRTON. At North Shields Police Court today, Thos. Strong, miner, Chirton, was charged with having stolen from Mr Sisterton’s market garden at Chirton on the 26th ult. a quantity of rhubarb, value 1s, and further with having committed a similar theft this morning. PC R. Askew stated that on the 26th ult., in consequence of a complaint received from Mr Sisterton, he went to the market garden kept by that gentleman. He examined some footprints in the garden and traced them to the fence, where he found a quantity of rhubarb leaves and a miner’s token bearing the number ‘34’. This morning at 4.20 witness was concealed in the garden and he saw the prisoner climb over the fence, go to the rhubarb bed and cut a bunch. Witness then came out of his place of concealment, and after a chase, caught the accused. Upon searching him at the police station he found in his possession a number of tokens bearing the same number as the one he found in the garden on the 26th. He charged him with the theft on that date and he replied “Well, I will have to take the weight of it”. Mr Sisterton having given evidence as to the value of the stolen rhubarb, the accused, who had nothing to say, was fined 5s and costs on each charge, and ordered to pay 1s 3d, the value of the rhubarb”. Name: Daniel McCann Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 8 August 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-53-Daniel McCann The Shields Daily Gazette for 8 August 1904 reports: "THREE MONTHS EACH. NEWCASTLE THIEVES IN NORTH SHIELDS Daniel McCann (30), Newcastle, and Mary Johnson (30), alias Elizabeth Chantiller, Newcastle, were charged with stealing the sum of 7s 2d from George Henry Lilley on the 6th. The prosecutor stated that at 8.35 pm on Saturday he was going along Collingwood Street when he saw the prisoners, who asked him to stand them a drink. They went into a public-house snug and witness called for three drinks. They were supplied, and immediately afterwards the male prisoner put his arms round his (witnesses's) neck. The two prisoners then went out and he followed them, and on putting his hand in his pocket he missed his money and some tobacco. He went to the prisoners and told them he had lost his money. They replied "We have not got it". He informed the police of his loss, and the two prisoners were afterwards arrested. Sergt. Weatherburn spoke to arresting the prisoners forty minutes after prosecutor spoke to him. In the male's possession was found 5s 2d and some tobacco which the prosecutor afterwards identified as his property. Prisoners now pleaded guilty. Chief Constable Huish said the man began his career in 1893 and the woman in 1895. This was the man's 36th appearance. In June 1893 , he was convicted for larceny from the person in Carlisle. The woman had also been convicted for frequenting for the purpose of committing a felony. The magistrates committed them for three months each". Kay (18), George Taylor (17) and William Miller (15) were charged on remand with being found on board the brig Agenda supposed for the purpose of committing a felony at 11.45 p.m. on Thursday. PC Proudlock stated that he found the defendants concealed under the bulwarks of the brig Agenda which was lying at the Union Quay. They had previously been on board of another ship. The defendants said they were on their way home and merely went on board the brig to sit down and warm themselves. They were discharged, the chairman warning them to keep off the boats." At North Shields Police Court today, Alexander Clay, a young man, was charged on remand with having stolen a brace, valued at £1, the property of Thos. Young Miller, Cartwright, Upper Toll Street. The prosecutor said the accused had done work for him. On the 24th July he missed a brace from his office and gave information to the police. A week later he was shewn the brace in a pawnshop. Margaret Clay, mother of the accused, said that on July 22nd her son asked her to pledge a brace for a young man who had no money. She pledged it and received 2s 3d and a ticket, which she gave to her son. PC Radcliff gave evidence of arresting and charging the accused, who replied “Yes, that’s right”. On being charged with the theft the accused said “I took it because he owed me money”. The prosecutor admitted that he gave the accused two jobs to do either for money or for a bicycle. He elected to take the bicycle and commenced to do the work but it was not yet finished. The Clerk (Mr R.F. Kidd): You had no right to help yourself to Mr Miller’s tools. The magistrates fined him 10s, including costs”. Fisher and Coy, Church Way, on the 14th inst., a silk handkerchief valued at 1/11. Accused said they were out of employment and hungry. This was their 7th appearance and they were committed to prison for 14 days". The Shields Daily News for 18 November 1907 reports: "At North Shields Police Court today before Coun. Sanderson and Mr Jas. Walton, George Edward Whiting (20), Robert Richardson (18), John Thomas Keating (22) and Jos. Walker (19) were charged with breaking and entering, between 6pm on Nov. 15th and 9am on Nov. 16th, marine store at Black Cock Quay, Clive Street, and stealing therefrom a cash box containing 4s 6d in money, a pair of opera glasses, value 10s, and a number of foreign coins, valued 1s, the property of Messrs Morris and Coy. Solomon Morris, who trades under the style of Morris and Co., said he left the premises secure at six pm last Friday and next morning he found that they had been broken into and the money and goods mentioned in the charge were missing. Witness found that an entrance had been effected by forcing away a board which had been nailed across a window. Inspector Proud said he apprehended Whiting at a house in Union Stairs. He then went to South Shields and received Richardson into custody from the police. He had been arrested while offering the opera glasses in pledge. Witness arrested Keating and Walker in an attic in Liddell Street. He jointly charged the four men with breaking and entering the premises and stealing a cash box containing 4s 6d, a pair of opera glasses and a number of foreign coins. Whiting replied: "I have nothing to say". Richardson said: "I can say there was only 2s 6d in the cash box and we shared it out, receiving 8d each". Keating's answer was "I have nothing to say; it's true" and Walker replied "I have nothing to say; that's right." Witness recovered the opera glasses and coins from the South Shields police and found the cash box in Linskill Bank leading from Clive Street to the Ropery Banks. The accused who had nothing further to say, were committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions." The Shields Daily News for 3 January 1908 reports from Northumberland Quarter Sessions: "SHOPBREAKING AT TYNEMOUTH. Joseph Walker, 19, labourer; John Thomas Keating, 22, labourer; Robert Richardson, 18, miner and George Edward Whiting, 20, cartman, all pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking and entering the shop of Messrs Morris and C. and stealing a cash box, a pair of opera glasses, a number of foreign coins and the sum of 4s 6d in money ... Inspector Proud, in answer to the Bench, said all the lads had been previously convicted. The Chairman said they wished to give two of the prisoners a chance to reform. Therefore they sentenced Walker to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labour, under the Borstal system, and Richardson was discharged on entering into his own recognisances of £5 to be of good behaviour for twelve months. Keating, whose record was commented on by the Bench as being a very bad one, and who was described by the Chairman as the leader of the gang, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour and Whiting to three months' with hard labour." This wasn't Robert Richardson's first offence. The Shields Daily News for 28 February 1907 reports: "THEFT OF IRON AT NORTH SHIELDS. YOUTHS SENT TO PRISON. At North Shields Police Court today, John Legg (19), Skipsey's Quay; Robert Richardson (17) and John Richardson (14), Union Stairs, Liddell Street, were charged with having stolen a quantity of iron from the Shields Engineering Company's Works, Bell Street, on the 27th inst. PC Dixon said that at 9.50 last night he was on duty in Liddell Street, near the Engineering Works, when he heard a noise on the shore. On going there he found a bag containing iron on the bottom of some steps and the three prisoners a few yards away. He asked them what they were doing there and they said they were looking for wood. While they were talking Legg went away and witness followed, but was unable to find him, and the iron had also disappeared. He afterwards saw the three prisoners in Richardson's home and arrested them. He charged them with the theft and they replied that the iron was there when they went on the shore. An assistant manager of the Shields Engineering Coy. valued the iron produced at 2s. The two eldest prisoners pleaded guilty, but John Richardson denied the charge. Legg, who had previously been imprisoned for larceny, was sent to gaol for a month with hard labour. Robert Richardson was committed for seven days in the second division and John Richardson was discharged." Name: Daniel Lagarieta Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 15 September 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-57-Daniel Lagarieta The Shields Gazette for 15 September 1904 reporte: "At North Shields Daniel Lagarecta, a Chilian seaman, was charged with having stolen a watch value 10s from the person of Thomas Stephenson on the 13th inst. Prosecutor stated that he was a labourer and resided at 50 Blyth Street, Percy Main. On the night of 13th inst he was walking round Northumberland Dock when he was accosted by the prisoner. After a short conversation he left him and afterwards he missed his watch and gave information to the police. PC Thomas Brown said that he arrested the accused on the night of the 13th and on searching him he found the watch in his possession. He charged him through an interpreter and he admitted having taken the watch. Accused was committed for one month with hard labour". Name: Lillian Tibbs Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 12 September 1914 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-250-Lillian Tibbs The Shields Daily News for 14 September 1914 reports: “PETTY LARCENY. BLYTH WOMAN IN TROUBLE AT NORTH SHIELDS. Today at North Shields, Lillian Tibbs (21), Blyth, was charged with stealing a blue voile dress, value £1, the property of Mrs A.G. Colledge, 19 Rippon Terrace, between the 1st and 2nd inst. The prosecutrix stated that eight weeks ago the prisoner engaged a combined room at her house, representing herself as a married woman. Witness afterwards found that she was not married and had given the wrong name and she ordered her to leave. On the day after she had gone witness missed the dress. Det. Mason said he received the accused into custody at Blyth where she had been apprehended on the information of the Shields police. She was wearing the dress when arrested. Accused admitted taking the dress but said she thought there was no harm in doing so; she had given Mrs Colledge half a dozen aprons and an overcoat. Mrs Colledge said that the accused supposed husband got the overcoat but the aprons were still there. Accused’s mother said that her daughter had been in a situation at Monkseaton and she (the mother) was not aware of the kind of life she had been leaving. She would promise to look after the girl if the magistrates would be lenient with her. She had given no trouble previously. It was stated that the accused had said she had gone to live with the man in question out of spite against his wife. The man had now gone away to the Front. Accused promised to amend her life and was bound over in the sum of £5 to be of good behaviour for six months". This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn’t record the details of each prisoner’s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest. In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ‘Shields Daily News’ looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot. Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time. Name: Mary Anne Blaids Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 17 June 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-37-Mary Anne Blaids The Shields Daily Gazette for 19 June 1905 reports: "At North Shields Mary Ann Blades (19), Newcastle, was charged with sleeping out on a doorstep in Linskill Street early on Saturday. Defendant said that she was drunk and that was the reason she was sleeping out. Chief Constable Huish said that the defendant made her 22nd appearance. She was committed for 14 days". The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette for 24 August 1904 reports: "A Young woman named Mary Ann Blades was charged with stealing clothing. Carl Anderson, a seaman on board the Gothenburg steamer Lindholmen, now lying in the Hudson Dock, said the clothing belonged to his shipmates and himself, and was worth 6s 6d. The clothes were missed from the vessel at three o'clock this morning. The Lindholmen lay alongside the Quay. PC Freeman of the River Wear Watch deposed that shortly before midnight yesterday he met the prisoner on the Dock carrying the bundle. She told several stories and then admitted stealing the things. The Bench committed the accused, who had a bad character, to gaol for three months with hard labour". The Shields Daily News for 13 December 1907 reports: “SEAFARING MEN SENT TO PRISON. Patrick Liljebald (35), described as a ship’s steward, of Gothenburg, and Eilert Tiller (20), a Norwegian sailor, were brought up on remand charged with breaking and entering on the 5th December a shop situate on the Union Quay, and stealing therefrom a quantity of cigarettes, tobacco etc, of the value of £1 4s 2d, the property of Messrs E.H. Smith and Co. The Chief Constable (Mr J.H. Huish) withdrew this charge and preferred one of simple larceny. Evidence was given to the effect that PC Armstrong, while on duty on the Union Quay, noticed that a window of the shop mentioned had been broken, and he in consequence kept observation upon the premises. Blowing his whistle and waving his lamp about he attracted the attention of a night watchman – Lawrence Bonholm – who came to his assistance. Leaving the latter outside, the officer entered the premises and found the two prisoners who tried to conceal themselves. He took them into custody and had them conveyed to the police station. On being charged with breaking and entering the premises, Liljebald said he had only gone there to get a sleep, while the other prisoner made no reply. Name: Elizabeth Dawson Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 20 June 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-45-Elizabeth Dawson The Shields Daily News for 21 June 1907 reports: “A DRESSMAKER’S DOWNFALL. At the North Shields Police Court today Elizabeth Dawson (52), described as a widow, of Sidney Street, was charged with being the bailee of two skirts, the property of Mrs Harrison of Bamborough Terrace and Mrs Dickinson of Whitley, and did convert them to her own use. It was explained in evidence that Mrs Harrison and Mrs Dickinson gave the accused, who is a dressmaker, the two skirts to alter. Instead of doing this, she pledged them at Messrs Findlay Mitchell and Co.’s pawnshop in Church Street. She told the assistant at that place of business that the skirts were her own property, and she being an old customer, he believed her statement and took them in, advancing 2s 6d upon each. Accused said that she was forced to do as she had because her landlady was pressing her for payment. The Bench gave her another chance, just binding her over to be of good behaviour for six months in the sum of £1. They thought drink had been the cause of her downfall and advised her to sign the pledge. She undertook to do so.” Sadly this wasn’t to be her last brush with the law.
