I have never wanted to make an art quilt, or at least that was true until I saw Karen Eckmeier demonstrate her Happy Villages on The Quilt Show last year. I have always been a sucker for cottages and villages and so I tucked away this idea for the future. The future arrived last week and I was amazed how quickly this little quilt came together. On a small piece of batting, I started with a chunk of sky, added a mountain and then some ocean. Next I cut out lots of different step shapes. And started to place these on the quilt. The key is not to overthink where you are putting the shapes, simply put up them as quickly as possible. Nothing like a village is it. But when I started adding rooftops and windows, something magic happened. When all the houses had been completed I covered everything in a very fine tulle which I quilted to hold it all in place. I couldn't resist adding a little umbrella to the terrace of the house at the bottom left. And here is my little Cinque Terra village (with a bit of artistic licence).
It's always fun when quilters send me pictures of their finished projects from class. I got this over the weekend from Mary. She made a nighttime Happy Village scene...now I want to make one too! I love that she used lighter colors on the roofs in the front and darker as you look to the back of the village. Very interesting aspects to this one. She used a black tulle with sparkles on it to show snow. Anne finished hers soon after class. It's a bit blurry, but you can see the project during class below. I've seen some other partially finished village pics so hope to see some more finished villages soon!
I had a few friends over this past weekend, they all brought along a dish of food, a bottle of refreshment, a pillow and some gossip.............More than enough to keep us going until today. On Friday we watched an episode of The Quilt Show featuring Karen Eckmeier and then we cut and glued until very late at night. It was so much fun. Then on Saturday, We turned boring white fabric...... Into this...... With the help of this lovely person And all her little pots of colour. Now we can all make lots and lots of these. They have all gone home now..........it's way too quiet...........
