Just reviewing some old Halloween resources, I found this book I created years ago. Present the book to the students, tell them that it is about Candy Corn Friends. Many students have not seen a candy corn. They don´t know what it is. Explain that it is a candy used in Halloween. Read aloud the book for them. Read using different voices for each Candy Corn. Such as a stronger voice for Frank and a different one for the witch. After reading discuss the book. Ask them questions about the characters. Teacher: What color is Frank ? Students: He is green. The other one can be just for reading or use it as a coloring book. Here is how mine turned out. For introducing the story use the puppets. Show them the characters of the book before reading. And you can use them after reading for the students to create their own story to present to the class. I made mine by gluing a craft stick but you can use a glove, felt anything to create wonderful puppets. And crowns can work for retelling the story or for role play. Recounting the story is a skill to grow. Retelling using props helps the students comprehend the story. You can read and have the students come to the front one by one as you mention them with their crown. Here is an interesting part, an interactive book. A little cutting, gluing and putting together their book. I made mine using a book ring. And then students can play in small groups. The board game has the characters. I made them stand using a clip. This a simple board game that doesn't take a lot of time to play. And there´s another version where the students have to say a word with each letter of Halloween. Teach the rule that when a player lands on an H, a word starting with letter h must be said in order to stay in that place, if not, the student has to stay where he/she was before. Pocket charts are also a good way to play in small groups making the sentences. I only have this little red pocket chart. I thought that didn´t have a place in the English language Teaching, but I started doing things and they are quite useful. Besides making sentences, students can sort the Halloween Characters by color. You can use them to create the sequence of the story book. Place all the characters in alphabetical order. And finally, make a coloring book to take home. By coloring in class, it helps to prepare students more structured lessons in the years to come. Coloring the Candy Corn characters will motivate the students to appreciate the difference between the characters. They can come with imaginative ways to color their Candy Corn friends. I prepared one as an example. Make 5 banners, one for each group. Place the letters all over the classroom, on the desks, ceiling, walls, door, window, in a random order. On your call, have two members from each group find the letters for each character and run to hand it in to the other two members waiting at the group desk to complete the banner. The group that has complete says STOP and wins. Use the banner and have the groups make up words using the letters in the banners. Example: VAMPIRE. Map, are, air,pair,rap,etc. Half card game: tailor the game to your students. I cut all the cards in half and hand them in in random order. All the students stand up and wonder around the classroom looking for another student who has the other half. Once they find their match, they stand together making a complete card. On your call, students stop looking and the winners are the ones who found their match. Have students arrange the puzzles and exchange them with another one. Trace cards. Place clear contact paper on the cards. Children can trace the words with their fingers before they use a white board marker. Have them read each word. I love doing clothespin. I painted them with acrylic paint made the pieces with fun foam. I added a template. And a cute Halloween headband. Number cards: They are to review the numbers 1 to 20, or just introduce them. Have the children line up the cards. Place them all on the board in a grid manner. Teacher: Number 7. students: candy corn ! or Teacher: moon! students: Number 12 ! I added a template to sort the cards into odd and even. some door decoration: The paper chains were so popular when I offered them for free in some groups, I am inlcuding it in the resource. I found these cute clip art that I thought of making some emotions plates.Students can color and trace each card. Just write the words with a dry erase markers on plastic paper plates. Tips, tricks and ideas for teaching sight words to ESl students.
Book: A House for a Mouse: The book series, I can - Richmond Publishing, has a story for each unit. Love all the resources that go along. I made a headband to teach the word Mouse and to use it as a prop for storytelling. The book has big storycards to follow up. I preferred to bind them and made reading captions for the teacher. Please write to me to get the story and all the files needed for the house theme: [email protected]. The files are always available by email. When going over the story ask students describe the picture, all the known vocabulary. Have them point to each part of the house and name them. There are worksheets that go with the story. Shape House This is a good moment to review shapes. This house is done using shapes. I got my templates from the book Sprinkles, Richmond Publishing. Make the shapes with cardboard: circle (I used a puncher), square, rectangle, triangle. Show each shape to the students , have the students identify them and repeat each word. Have them trace each shape in the air. Build the house using the House format and the cardboard paper. Show them the roof. Say: It´s the roof. Students: It´s the roof. Ask: What shape is the roof ? Students: It´s a triangle. Ask: What color is the triangle ? Students: It´s red. Place the triangle in place. Continue with windows and chimney. Use the worksheet and have the students color and cut all the shapes to make the house, one color for each shape. Play the SHOW ME game , asking students to to hold uop the different parts. Teacher: Show me the windows. Then hand out cardboard or construction paper and students glue in all their house parts to make the house. Invite individual students to the front and describe their house, saying all the parts of the house and naming all the shapes and color. House cutouts I can´t emphasize enough how important visual are to teaching. I am lucky that my books come with these cutouts, but you can make your own, using the web you can get flashcards that can double as cutouts or get them from magazines. I made another set of cutouts to share. Here are some ideas on how to use them. Game from the book series JIGSAW Macmillan Publishing. Play Moving House: give all the children a room or a furniture cutout, make some more copies if needed. Make sure that there as many pieces of furniture as there are rooms. Play music and the children move around looking for a partner and stand together before the music stops,e.g. beds and bedrooms should stand together. Worksheets Worksheets are great resources for our class, I sometimes feel that there are not so many around for Language Teachers. Here are some to use from my books. When using worksheets have students point to vocabulary before starting to color directly, most teachers use as a coloring page. Have students point to the family members, have them point to the parts of the house, have them say the colors of each part of the house. Then have the students say where each family member is in the house. As for coloring I designate a color for each furniture. Teacher: Color the TV red. This is the eighth theme from the series of 30 units for the Preschool-Kindergarten English Language Learners. Here are some teaching tips for the MY Family Unit. The Family Unit flashcards are great to have the students identify the family members: mother, father,sister,brother,baby.grandma,grandpa. Teacher: It's Mommy! There is a b/w version. Ask questions with WHO? Teacher: Who's this? Students: Brother! At this point most students know the parts of the face. Use the flashcards for the students to review that vocabulary. Place the flashcards on the board and have the students ready to point to the face parts as you indicate. Teacher: Point to daddy’s eye. Point to daddy’s ear. Have the students draw items that can relate to the family member. In my example, I placed the flashcard inside a clear plastic sheet and had the students draw the necklace and a purse for mommy. It can be a tie for dad, glasses for grandpa and so on. And all the students know how to greet people, but this time they will greet family members. See their oracy and how they respond appropriately. I used the hello and good-bye hand worksheet to do this. Student: Hello, dad! Students will color each hand in green for Hello and in red for good-bye. Then, cut and paste onto a craft stick to make a puppet. Hold on to this, it be used to greet the community helpers and more. Teacher: Good-bye, sister. How many in the family? Flashcards Use these flashcards to ask How many people in this family? and count. Teacher: This is a family. How many people are there in this family? Students: one, two, three, four, five, six! Teacher: There are six people in this family. Let’s see. Mommy, Daddy, brother, sister, sister, baby. Teacher: Is he the father? Student: Yes, he is. Use the worksheet: this is my family. Have the students draw their family members and do the show and tell as in your example with flashcards. The Grammar Structure card can be used to introduce grammar points using the flashcards. Family unit Small cards ideal for online teaching. Studens can sort the small cards into groups of young / old and boy/girl. Use the labels to identify the adjectives young and old. Teacher: Grandma is old! What about the baby? Students: The baby is young! Teacher: Is brother young or old? Students: young! More things to do with the small cards. Use magnetic letters for your older students to write each family member word. I have wanted to do this activity. I gathered all the wet wipes bag and cut the large opening. I glued all the small cards first. Then, I pasted the openings from the wipes bags using silicon glue. Have fun playing guess who? Family unit Cutouts. I used recycled straws from Burger King. The size is small enough for online teaching and big enough to use in the classroom. In groups of 4, students sit in a circle and take turning asking each other a question. Do you have (a ghost)? Another book with the Halloween characters on cars. I added puppets to make a running race with the puppets and assign first, second place to review the ordinal numbers. The Matching cards are fun to play. I got the idea to make colored plates because buying a set of plates in each color is too much money. I got small paper plates and colored the inner circle in each. Then it is just sort the cards in each plate. And just pairing all the cards is a good reading activity. Play Bingo with the cards! Hand in a Spinner to each student and have them write any color and Halloween noun combination and play the Bingo game.

Laminate or place each one into a plastic sheet and they can write all the words instead of gluing. I see Coloring Book. Some teachers see coloring as a waste of time but it has many advantages. It improves the student´s handwriting. They can learn how to be patient, to focus on their work, to concentrate. It stimulates creativity and self- expression. Candy Corn Color Words. Just a simple worksheet that children color as indicated. Then have them cut all the candy corns. Say a new way to put a candy corn together. Teacher: pink, white, orange. This is a good listening activity. But turn it into speaking as a student says another option and the class builds the candy corn as said. They can do this in small group and paste it onto cardboard for decoration. A set of Flashcards to introduce and assist in learning the Halloween words. Just print them. I made them small so it is easy to carry from one class to another. Make a grid on the board, on one side the letter and on the other the number. Say a letter and number combination: Teacher: D4 Students: bag ! Use the template and make bottle caps letters to write the Halloween words. I made a Haunted House! I glued it onto a shoe box and all the characters I placed them on the biggest clip I found. This is the teacher´s version for reviewing prepositions. Place the characters and say a sentence. Teacher: The cat is behind the house. Continue with the other Halloween children. Then ask questions: Teacher: Where is the ghost ? Students: He is in front of the house. Hand in the student´s version. Have them make a poster by putting up their own version of the Haunted House. They will have to write some sentences and present it to the class. Color Words Mat. Print the color mat and the color words. Students match each word to the picture. This is how I put it together. Commands Flashcards. Use the commands flashcards for introducing YES and NO. Place a craft stick behind the small YES and No command small card. Hand in the puppets cards to the students. Ask questions showing the flashcard. Teacher: Is this red? Students: YES! As they show the Yes flashcard. The basic Show me! Command Flashcard is great for teaching the command as you ask the students to show you any color flashcard from the vocabulary worksheets. Teacher: Show me the blue flashcard. This is a set of vocabulary worksheets. Students color the splotches and trace the words. This will be the student's set of cards. Cut the items on the worksheets into cards following the lines. Make a book by finding colored items on magazines and gluing them on the corresponding page. If not, students can draw items. Students can play with a partner a memory game using their sets of cards. Ask questions: What color can you see? Students: orange, orange! Teacher: It's a match! A good listening activity that can be done with any set of cards is to place a sequence of cards on the table as they listen. Teacher: orange, green, pink, purple! Set 2 of worksheets -follow the line and color. When the worksheet is finished, cut the cans and the splotches and have the students put them together as a puzzle. Completing the worksheet! Use the fries containers to sort out the worksheet puzzle pieces. Coloring worksheets for older students. They can use the vocabulary flashcards as a guide for coloring if they are not sure of any color word. Tips on how to use the worksheet. Your students can ask and answer questions about their favorite color using the worksheets. Teacher: What´s your favorite color? You can use the printables color splotch flashcards and have the stduents come and place their worksheet under the color flashcard that matches their favorite color. If printing is not available, trace the splotch from the worksheet and create a splotch in each color using colored construction paper leftover. Place the splotches on the wall and have the students come and place their worksheet and say: My favorite color is pink. Get even more out of the worksheet. Have the students cut the color splotch and make a crown. When all the crowns are ready, make groups of colors. Teacher: Pink! go to the door! Color Words Cutouts. There are the color words cutouts in color and in black and white. You can make puppets to use online or in class to name the colors. Show a color word puppet and have the students find any object in that color and show it to you. Use the color words along the small cards. Students can color the black and white version and using finger paint. I also used a recycle CD as a paint palette. When the students finish coloring they can cut each color words for more activities.The color words can be sorted using the fries containers. Print the set of color splotches and make puppets to play games or just review the colors. Another version is to add the colored splotches to the fries containers. Bingo is always a favorite and it can be done in class or online.Give the students their Bingo template. Have them color all five splotches. Show or hang the colors involved as in the Bingo teacher mat. At your signal start calling the colors. Have them cross out or mark the color they hear. Print two of the Teacher’s template. One to cut into cards and another to use as a mat but in a different hue. This is how I use the Bingo game. Puzzle! Cut all the pieces and have the students find all the puzzles. Color Picture and Words Match Cards. Have the students match the picture to the corresponding word. There are two sets of cards to match. One with the words in colors and another with the word in black. Colors DOMINO. Just print, cut and play. A great opportunity for the students to learn the color recognition. Printable Book. Students color the puzzle person and trace the sentence. Assemble the book and practice reading. Video of the book. Craft. The craft is always a fun way to show all what the students know and listen to new language as they move on working on the craft such as, glue, color, put, etc. There is a rainbow printable with a color assigned to each section. I made mine by adding colored glue to each section and then gluing little beads to complete the rainbow. Why crafts in the classroom? VIDEO Awards. There is an award for all the hard work to end the theme. There are colored bracelets to print onto white paper and there is a b/w version to print either on colored paper or for the students to color. If your students are very young, let them color the bracelet in their favorite color. Give praise as your put a tape to close the bracelet. Some teachers need some Flashcards in Spanish. Here is a set included. The words can be changed to adjust to the ones that you need. A set of St. Patrick's Day shamrocks Flashards in each color. For St. Patrick's Day, print and play BINGO!!! easy and fun. If your print it double you have a memory game. More things added to the HOLIDAY: Domino! Small cards matching games. Easter Celebration with an egg theme. Here are the flashcards for Easter, an egg in each color. Use the flashcards for your students to copy the writing of each color words if they are ready. I have these strips of card for writing that I got at Dollar Tree years ago. I also have these writing board sign that can be used with white board makers. It's from the Dollar Tree as well. The cutouts from the unit are good here for color word recognition. Students can match each word to a flashcard. There is another set of Easter Eggs Flashcards in a black and white version. With black and white version, you can do many art activities. This idea es crayon resist. Students will trace the egg and draw anything on the egg. Then with watercolor, they will color over the egg and the things that the students drew will stay in white. Students can trace the border using beads, stickers or any other things that you have available. Use glitter and glue. I used to do that in school and love it. Students should get a chance to do it. The last one is getting three or more Q-tips and putting a rubber to hold them all so it won't move. Start tracing the egg with the Q-tip device. Print these Easter and Color eggs two games and the students can play by themselves. First, this is the Easter Eggs board game. And the color word match with Easter eggs just like the other one in this resource. Add worksheets to start completing the Easter Activities Kit, all included in this Color Unit Resource. There is one mat for the jack-o-lantern. If you want additional writing activities, just place the mat into a clear plastic sheet and hand in a dry erase marker. Have them write the color words, you can use the color cutouts to guide them. Halloween Bingo. Give the students their template with five jack-o'-lantern that they have to color as they want. Print your calling cards and have ready to play. Make sure that the students are coloring the jack-o-lanterns using any of the calling cards template. Hand in the 3 pages for making the picture dictionary. It is a good idea to do this in groups. This is a cut and paste activity. I love tracing cards. It is a spelling activity that can be done using the clear plastic sheet. Just as some native language students learn to trace words in Preschool some ESL learners benefits from tracing. I made another set of tracing cards that can work as coloring cards. Practice coloring the body parts and/or the clothes. I made a smaller version of the tracing cards to create an accordion book. First, I glued one card onto another. Then, I folded all the cards into an accordion. I traced the cover onto cardboard to make the other part of the book. I glued the first page onto the cover and the last one onto the cardboard. Just a worksheet to place all the words in ABC order. Spelling Bingo is always a fun game to play. Use the small cards or the Big Flashcards to call the Bingo words. Students just write a playing word in each part of the spinner. They have to cross out the word that is being called if they have it. If Spelling Bingo is not enough. Try Spelling Scrabble. I added the Scrabble letters. I printed them onto Halloween colored paper, I chose orange and purple. I did my example using the puppets, you can use any of the small cards in the resource. I also made worksheets with all the Halloween Characters without the face parts and for the students to color the clothes items. Teacher: This is Dracula. He has green eyes, a small nose and funny mouth. Students draw as indicated. You can also dictate how he is dressed or have them color the clothes and then describe his clothes. Here are just a few and made a haunted house, it comes in two pages which you will have to glue to make a big one. I printed mine onto orange cardboard and colored the door, the windows and roof to review parts of the house. Teacher: What color is the door? Students: It’s brown! Use the puppets to review the words. Teacher: Who is he? Students: He is the Mummy! Teacher: Who is she? Students: She is the Witch! I also used the puppets to do prepositions practice. Just reviewing some old Halloween resources, I found this book I created years ago. Present the book to the students, tell them that it is about Candy Corn Friends. Many students have not seen a candy corn. They don´t know what it is. Explain that it is a candy used in Halloween. Read aloud the book for them. Read using different voices for each Candy Corn. Such as a stronger voice for Frank and a different one for the witch. After reading discuss the book. Ask them questions about the characters. Teacher: What color is Frank ? Students: He is green. The other one can be just for reading or use it as a coloring book. Here is how mine turned out. For introducing the story use the puppets. Show them the characters of the book before reading. And you can use them after reading for the students to create their own story to present to the class. I made mine by gluing a craft stick but you can use a glove, felt anything to create wonderful puppets. And crowns can work for retelling the story or for role play. Recounting the story is a skill to grow. Retelling using props helps the students comprehend the story. You can read and have the students come to the front one by one as you mention them with their crown. Here is an interesting part, an interactive book. A little cutting, gluing and putting together their book. I made mine using a book ring. And then students can play in small groups. The board game has the characters. I made them stand using a clip. This a simple board game that doesn't take a lot of time to play. And there´s another version where the students have to say a word with each letter of Halloween. Teach the rule that when a player lands on an H, a word starting with letter h must be said in order to stay in that place, if not, the student has to stay where he/she was before. Pocket charts are also a good way to play in small groups making the sentences. I only have this little red pocket chart. I thought that didn´t have a place in the English language Teaching, but I started doing things and they are quite useful. Besides making sentences, students can sort the Halloween Characters by color. You can use them to create the sequence of the story book. Place all the characters in alphabetical order. And finally, make a coloring book to take home. By coloring in class, it helps to prepare students more structured lessons in the years to come. Coloring the Candy Corn characters will motivate the students to appreciate the difference between the characters. They can come with imaginative ways to color their Candy Corn friends.
