Here is a silly drawing games that is a lot of fun for kids to play. In this drawing game, you use dice to decide what parts of the drawing you will draw. We have included a face drawing game and a landscape drawing game. This is a lot of fun and it helps children who might not be able to draw freely and creatively...this will help them draw more freely and creatively. This will also increase silliness.
One of my favorite books to read with students in October is Room on the Broom. This wonderfully illustrated book with repetitive lyrical text is widely popular among teachers, parents and speech-language pathologists. The classic "defeat evil with kindness" theme appeals to all students. As a speech-language pathologist, I am always on the lookout for fiction and non-fiction books that can be used to target multiple speech and language goals. Room on the Broom is one of those books that can be differentiated to target multiple receptive and expressive communication goals. In this post, I want to share 14 ways to use Room on the Broom in your speech therapy sessions, as well as direct you to the author's website for more resources to incorporate in your therapy sessions. Speech and Language Targets: Vocabulary Development - Target rich Tier 2 vocabulary terms such as: cauldron, wailed, ginger, plait, bounded, keen, clambered, shrieked, fluttered, clutched, wand, cloak, moor, bog, thundering, strode, and muttered. Students can identify the parts of speech, root and affix. Students can also define, describe, illustrate and determine word meaning from context. Phonemic Awareness - Written in poetic form, Room on the Broom includes opportunities for students to identify rhyming words, choral read repetitive text, expand on word families (ex: hat, cat, that, etc.) segment and blend multisyllabic words (ex: broomstick, eagerly, magnificent), and delete and/or add prefixes and suffixes (ex: shrieked, dripping, searched). Sequencing - Room on the Broom has several characters and details. Students can use visuals to sequence events, illustrate the events themselves with a flow map or foldable, and connect events with temporal concepts. Students can identify and associate events using the terms "first, next, then," and "last." Other temporal concepts may also include: "before" and "after." Cause and Effect - I love the detailed and repetitive cause and effect events throughout Room on the Broom. I've identified 5 cause/effect relationships that would be ideal for to discuss with your students. "The wind blew so wildly it blew off her hat." "The witch laughed aloud and held onto her hat, but away blew her bow from her long, ginger plait." "The witch tapped her broomstick and whoosh they were gone." "The witch clutched her bow but let go of her wand." "The frog jumped for joy and the broom snapped in two." Problem and Solution - There are several problems that occur throughout the story. Minor problems, such as, "How will the witch get her bow back?" to the major conflict with the dragon wanting to eat the witch. The witch's friends pay back her kindness by helping her out. They cover themselves with mud and scare the dragon away by claiming, "Buzz off...That's our witch!" Students can identify both small and large problems. This would also be a great opportunity to bring in the concept of size of the problem to discuss with students. Compare and Contrast - What two better characters to compare and contrast than the WITCH and the DRAGON? Students can identify similarities and differences between these two characters and complete a Venn Diagram to show how they are alike and how they are different. Wh-Questions - Students can demonstrate basic comprehension by answering "Who?" "What?" "When?" "Where?" and "Why?" questions. Questions can relate to details ("Who dropped her bow?"), vocabulary ("What animal bounded?"), sequence ("What happened after __?"), or abstract thinking ("Why do you think___?"). Inference Skills - The beautiful illustrations provide many opportunities for students to infer. Ask students to look at the dragon's face and tell you what they think the dragon is either thinking or feeling. Students can also think beyond the text by making predictions, such as, "Where do you think the characters will go next?" Character Traits - I want my students to think beyond the text and develop abstract reasoning skills from text. Characters are more than what they see on the outside and character traits are very difficult concepts for students to grasp. Rather than guessing or assuming the witch is nice instead of mean, students should go back to the text and locate text evidence to support their character analysis. Using a a bubble map or character web is often a great visual for helping students organize their thinking and connect their ideas with characters. Onomatopoeia - Whoosh! Phew! Zoom! Who doesn't love a little onomatopoeia sprinkled in the story. Just reading these words aloud creates the FUN in story telling. Irregular and Regular Past Tense Verbs - Room on the Broom is written in past tense. The text includes both regular and irregular past tense verbs. You can focus on both familiar and new verbs as you read and re-read this story. Target verbs may include: stirred, muttered, started, jumped, dropped, clambered, flapped, wagged, laughed, held, clutched, tapped, climbed, cried, filled, squelched, dripped, spluttered, flew, strode, found, and threw. Descriptive Adjectives - The text is very descriptive and provides sensory details throughout the story. Terms such as: horrible, tall, dark and sticky, furred, terrible, and frightful are used to describe the dragon's appearance and presence. Students can locate descriptive adjectives and expand on the list by adding their own ideas and thoughts. Students can also sort adjectives by how they appeal to the 5 senses. "Which words describe texture? Which words describe sound?" Summarize - Many of my students have narrative retell goals. Being able to retell a familiar story is a critical skills for story comprehension. Students can fill in a story map graphic organizer with character, setting, problem, and solution and then use the visual to help organize their expressive language for story retell. Articulation - Word lists can be generated from the rich text of this story. I especially noticed the frequency of /r, l, s, k, g/ "ch," "th," and "sh" throughout the story. There are also a high number of consonant blends and vocalic-r words in the text as well. Students can identify words with their target sounds and practice them at the word, phrase, sentence and reading levels depending on their specific goals. Room on the Broom is a FUN and EXCITING seasonal book for October. If you have used this book in your therapy, I'd love to hear some of your ideas for targeting multiple speech and language goals. Let's take a break from holiday activities to talk about stuttering therapy. I do have a Halloween activity for my fluency kids, but I will blog about that later. Here is a clue: Cadavers. Gross, right? Anyway, when students begin therapy with me for stuttering, one of the first things we do is describe what stuttering is and how they stutter. Part of that is describing types of stutters. For my students in kindergarten through second grade we talk a lot about smooth, bumpy, and blocked speech. There are a variety of activities that we do to really make this concept concrete. But, this one is a favorite! First we make roads with basic supplies: index cards, crayons, paper, glue. The roads are either in a straight line for smooth speech, a bumpy road for bumpy speech, and a road block in the middle of the road for blocked speech. The students then choose three cars (I got these are the dollar store). We drive the cars on the roads and say words, phrases, and sentences with the type of speech on the little paper street. For example, we say, "This road is smooth for my car," "This this this this is a bumpy road for my car," and "My_______ car hit a road block." All while moving the cars along the roads. When we are done driving, I hot glue the cars to their page. The kids think this part is pretty cool. Plus, they love taking this project home to show their parents!

The children choose a card, tell where they will put the pumpkin, and put it in the pictured place. OR, "hide" the pumpkins in the pictured areas. Let the child find the pumpkin and using the picture for support, tell where the pumpkin was found. I reused this activity several times a year. The pumpkin could be an apple, a baseball mitt, or a shamrock. You must have Boardmaker to download this activity from BoardmakerOnline.com. Many of my favorite children's books are the ones my mom read to me when I was little. Heckedy Peg by Audrey Wood and illustrated by Don Wood was always a favorite, especially because my mom could do ALL the voices so well! This book is very engaging and the illustrations are phenomenal. The Woods (husband and wife team) are my all time favorite children's authors. I have a small collection of their books and love them all! A few of their other books I've read to my student's this year: The Big Hungry Bear (great for preschoolers and making predictions), Quick As A Cricket (simile practice!), The Napping House (sequencing/synonyms), and Silly Sally (/s/ sound practice!). I live, eat, breathe, and sleep my job right now but I'm finally feeling motivated to write about it. Thought it'd be fun to share one this book and the activities I use with it. This is a long post because I really love this book and have a lot I do with it. Materials I use: The book! Picture cards that I've made and laminated of the children, the items they've requested, and the different food they turn into. I used a color copier and google images to make these. I have an activity for almost every page of this book. Sometimes I use them all, sometimes not. Let's explore: Page 1: On this page and every page we review vocabulary in the book as needed. I always like to pause here and discuss the word "chores". Everyone gets a turn telling me one chore they don't mind doing and then their least favorite chore. For example, mine goes like, "I don't mind doing the dishes, but I DO NOT like cleaning the bathrooms". Then, I have them describe the different chores they do versus the chores done on a farm like in the book. I may also do a thinking map or venn diagram here. (This activity can be done before reading the book as it can take up a speech therapy session on it's own! Then it is just a quick review while reading.) Page 2: The children ask their mom for what they would like from the store. I lay picture cards out of the children, the items they've request, and have my students match them. Page 3: On this page the mother tells her students two "rules". Not to play with fire and not to talk to strangers. I prompt my students to recall the "rules" and foster discussions about fire safety and stranger danger. Page 4: Here we discuss whether or not the witch is a stranger. She offers them gold to let her in, so we discuss not accepting items from strangers, even if it's gold. Page 5: The suspense grows on this page! The children bring the witch burning pieces of straw to light her pipe. An opportunity to talk about how gross smoking is and ask the students to recall the mother's rules!! Page 6: The witch turns the children to food! My students freak out with anticipation at this moment and are enthralled in the book. I love it. Once they calm down, I bring out the picture cards again and we match up who turned into what food. Page 7: Some basic concept vocabulary review words on this page (in, across, through, over). Page 8: The mother returns and we talk about the emotions of all the characters at this point. (Also, the little blackbird offers to help her. It's fun to flip back through the book at this point or when done reading and do a search for the little blackbird in all the scenes.) Page 9: I just read this page. :) Page 10: Check for understanding, character emotions reviewed, and predictions. Page 11: This is my favorite page/activity! The witch tells the mother she has to guess which food is which child or they will be eaten. The mother has to guess right the first time. All she has in front of her are her children (as food) and the items they asked her to bring them. I ask my students what they think she will do. I give them support as needed to figure out that she will match the items in her basket to the food (for example, milk goes with pitcher). I do not let my student turn the page yet. THEY get to participate in the book. First, I lay out the items that the children turned into. Then, I give the students the items in the "basket" and have them work as a team to match the items. I remind them that they have to get them all correct or the witch will eat them! When they are *sure* of their answers, they get to turn the page. Page 12: As we read this page, I check my student's answers and place the pictures of the characters above the items they matched. Did the mother get it right? Did the students get it right? The last pages: No more activities, we all just enjoy a happy ever after and talk about how much we love the book. :) I spread this book and the activities over a week or two of therapy sessions depending on the age of my students. I have used it with 1st-4th grade. Modify as needed. HAPPY READING Literacy is important for education and success!! Find ways to inspire a child in your life to fall in love with reading! “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” - Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!" “The nonreading children are the greatest problem in American education.” - Glenn Doman, "How to Teach Your Baby to Read" “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” - Emilie Buchwald

I have been really bad at taking pictures of what is been going on in my classroom lately! I have just been SO busy! Therefore, on Thursday I made a POINT to get the camera out and snap some shots for y'all! Here are a few things that we have been doing in class lately! Luckily I have Ms. Thomas to split up the lesson planning! Thank You Kiss Kiss to a bff teamie! I have been planning our Math lessons so far this year. We are currently finishing up addition and doubles facts. Last week while checking out Pinterest I saw this ADORABLE idea to create a Doubles Rap Ipod. I have taught the rap every year, but I thought this idea was perfect for my littles! They loved it. On the inside I had them make doubles facts flashcards to store in their Ipod. They love opening the ipod and flashing those cards. *If you would like the template for the rap and ipod piece let me know and I will upload it* Last week in Treasures one of our skills was learning about adding -ed. Ms. Thomas purchased this from The Teachers Wife. Seriously loved it. It was perfect. This is the poster that the packet came with. There was also a student copy included where the students could decorate the -ed and then write words ending with -ed around it. I placed the student copy on my board and demonstrated how to decorate their copies as well. My students love to watch me draw and decorate. Bless their hearts, they think I am such an artist. Alright, I was motivated! Here is the Halloween edition of the preposition mini-books. This activity follows the same template as the other preposition mini-books offered by A and M productions. This activity includes 12 vocabulary cards and 12 fill-in-the blank cards to target prepositions. For the reinforcement activity glue or Velcro the apples into the basket. You can also make a pocket using the candy bag provided. This will allow children the ability to physically put the candy pieces inside. I recommend using a manila envelope for the pocket. Targeted prepositions include: over, under, on top, in front, next to, in the middle, around, behind, between, inside, out, and across. Grab the activity at TPT
