Preschool circle time is when the teacher and the children sit together to learn and talk about different things. In a Montessori classroom, this is the only time the whole class sits together as a group. Usually, teachers take this opportunity to talk about the calendar, weather and theme. But it doesn’t have to stop there. There are lots of other developmentally beneficial circle time activities. I have listed some of my favourite ones. I hope you will find them useful. But before we get into the list, I want to talk a little bit about a few dos and don’ts of circle time.

The complete resource for the park unit is here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Park-or-Playground-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-20-7345816 Playground Unit Worksheets are still an important English teaching material for active learning. It’s important that students have their own set of flashcards either to take home or to play in class. This activity is with cups that I attached the card with a binder clip and had the students sort the cutouts. Encourage students to collaborate with one another as a teamwork doing this activity. I love to extend the worksheets. The listen and color worksheets are fun. There is the boy and the girl. Teacher: Find the slide! Color the slide red. Have the students say the color of the other drawings in the worksheet. At the end, either you or the students can cut up the worksheet and create a puzzle that another student can put together. Worksheets are for individual work in class or to send home if your school requires homework. It’s easy for the parents to help complete with their children and review the adjectives big and small. Worksheets can be used for assessment. Park Unit Worksheets can be used to review concepts from previous lessons. In this case, numbers and shape. Students should be able to identify the shapes and the numbers in a picture of a park scene. They should be able to follow directions to find the numbers and shapes. Teacher: Find Number 1. Color it yellow. Tracing worksheets help developing the fine motor skills. After the worksheet is done, make puppets to play games in class. More worksheets to highlight the park unit vocabulary. A collaborative quilt is a creative way for children to work together! The children made group quilts for our continuing celebration of the Indiana State Fair. As I walked into this classroom, I observed the children all gathered around something, so I had to take a closer look to see what all the hub-bub was about.

Collaborative projects! Collaborative projects are one of my favorite things. I love them at the start of the year and the end. I love doing them with the whole school or just a grade level. I love using songs, themes, artist-inspiration...you name it. I just love collaboratives! We've done a TON over the years and I thought I'd put them all together in one big ole blog post. So, here you go: my 20 Favorite Collabortive Projects. Be sure and click on the links, many of these have how-to videos. Check out this blog post on how we created several canvases in this style for our school and the school library! Students worked in table teams to create these positive four-letter words to describe our school! Here's a simple, fast and fun project using clothes pens, paint and words that describe who we are! A fun mural based on the book You Be You was created by nearly all of my students. You can learn about the process of creating our fish here. Read all about the making of the mural itself here! Another book we used for inspiration is the book by Todd Parr called It's Okay to be Different. You can check out how we created these collages here! The Our School Has Heart mural was a piece with a contribution from each student in the school. You can see the breakdown of who created what in this blog post. Our clay collaborative mural is a bright and shiny beauty that hangs in a prominent place in our school. Each student contributed something to this piece...you can read more about the process here. One year, we created a Village of Kindness as apart of our art show! Each student upcycled a milk carton that our cafeteria queen cleaned in the dishwasher. The students made little doors that opened and said kind words to those who peeked inside. Students worked together to create the landscape on the bulletin board. I love to do collaboratives at the start of the school year. I especially like ones where students celebrate our school and that set a postive tone. That was the idea behind this collaborative! Another fun way to start the school year is with some selfies! We've created them for a monochromatic mural. You can check out the video here. Inspired by the artist Romero Britto, this mural was created by my students when I was out for jury duty! My sub just played the video and when I returned, I assembled the mural! A collaborative mural that definitely made the rounds was this one! The kids loved creating the feathers and it was a beautiful thing while in the hallway but I will say...it was a lot of work to assemble. All the details here. My fourth graders created this collaborative one year that lives at the front entrance of our school. We even 'wrapped' it for Christmas and brought out admin out for them to unwrap it as it was hung on the wall of our school. We kicked off this school year with our What a Wonderful World collaborative mural. Details and video tour here. Here's another look of our school mural. Above that, you'll see our Learning for All collaborative! During our field day one year, my students rotated through many art stations. One of them was this alphabet and number series. My librarian requested them and we just love how they turned out. Click here to see them framed and hung in our school library. Much like our monochromatic collaborative, this map collaborative was created with a self-portrait of each of my students! We are the tigers at my school so we do tiger-themed artwork every so often. This mural was created by first graders of all of their tiger drawings. You can find a how-to video right here! In table teams, my third graders created a Rizzi City inspired by the artist James Rizzi. One year, we did super-sized works of art inspired by Andy Warhol and Vincent van Gogh! When these came together, they were stunning. All the details can be found here.

Do you know what cognates are? Do you use them in your classroom? If you have ELLs in your classroom (even if you're not a bilingual teacher) you should be using them!! Or maybe you are a Dual Language teacher and have students learning Spanish? Use cognates!! For some strange reason my students adore that little word and we talk about it EVERY SINGLE DAY in our classroom. If you were to come into my classroom and ask one of my students what cognates are, they would simply say: words that sound about the same in English or Spanish and share a similar meaning. That's it! Pretty easy to understand...right? Let's see some examples from the Cognates Wall in my classroom: Some cognates are spelled the same in English and Spanish, some others aren't and that's ok. Like I tell my kids: as long as they sound close to another word and they remind you of a word in Spanish. Why should I use cognates in my classroom? Cognates are a super powerful strategy to use with ELLs. They are able to make a connection between the two languages and build their comprehension. Every time we are getting ready to read a new text, I immediately ask my students to look for cognates and underline them. Other times, while my students and I are talking, a cognate will come up. I usually say very quickly and excited: THAT'S A COGNATE!! Eventually, the kids start telling me when they find one and it becomes an exciting little game! WATCH OUT FOR FALSE COGNATES!! Unfortunately there are some words that appear to be cognates but they aren't. Remember that cognates have a similar sound and definition. Some words sound the same in English and Spanish but they DO NOT share the same definition. For example: the word embarrassed is usually misused by bilingual students because it sounds similar to "embarazada" in Spanish which means pregnant! We certainly don't want our kids misusing that word lol! The word carpet in English is similar to "carpeta" in Spanish. However, "carpeta" means folder. If you are going to teach cognates to your kids, you gotta watch out for these tricky words. Remember, when in doubt, just Google it! If you tell your students about false cognates they will be aware and understand not all words are cognates! And let me tell you... they will LOVE to find those false cognates. Here is a link to my favorite list of cognates. (By the way Colorin Colorado is an amazing website with very helpful articles on teaching ELLs). I use this list every day! Remember to talk to your students about false cognates, they will learn to recognize them faster than you think!
This is the ninth theme from the series of 30 units for the Preschool-Kindergarten English Language Learners. Here are some teaching tips for the next part of the lesson plan, PRACTICE. I have lots of worksheets that recycle all the other vocabulary learned. A series of toys worksheets and strategies for your K-1. LINK to the resource: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Toys-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-9-6169520 Set 1 of Worksheets for identifying or describing toys to use with your kindergarten students. Listen and color! Cut through the lines and then you have small cards for the students to play games. Students can hold up their card and say: I have a teddy bear./ This is my robot./ I love my kite. Place a small envelope on the board. I used a CD envelope with the clear plastic facing front next to each toy vocabulary flashcard. Have the students insert their small card inside the envelope where it corresponds. The favorite toy name worksheet. I made it in big and small format. Put the toys flashcards on the board. Have the students draw their favorite toys from the ones that are on the flashcards. When they are done drawing, students come to the board and place their drawing under the same flashcard. Students count how many drawing are under each flashcard. From a worksheet to a craft. Check how I assembled the kite. Then do a speaking activity. Students say the color of each bow. Check the video for speaking. A worksheet to review the adjectives BIG and small to aid your students into recognizing and naming the characteristic of the toys as in BIG and small. A sorting activity to follow up using plastic plates.Fantastic thinking skill. Teacher: It it big or small? Students: It's big! It's a big ball. More toys words exercises. Review the colors and then students create phrases, such as: a red car. Ask questions: What color is the kite? Students: yellow! Another worksheet to review the colors (red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple) along the Toys. Students will color the toys as in the phrase. Students will draw a little. Then, do a little writing using magnetic letters. I added a magnetic strip to a recycled chocolate box. The toys unit gives an opportunity to review the parts of the face and/or the body parts. Teacher: Show the robot worksheet. This is the head! These are the hands. Students can draw the parts of the face on the robot and more toys. There is the template to make the toy box using a recycled cereal box. Just tape it. And anything can go inside the box! Check the activity. A review of the colors is easy with the Toys Unit. Ask questions: Is it a teddy bear? Students: yes, it is. Review the concept of Big and small with the toys. Dictate the color of each object. Teacher: The big ball is blue! When the worksheet is finished, write the words big and small on plastic plates with white board markers so you can erase the words easily. Students can cut the words and the toys to sort onto the plates. Students color each toy as you dictate and color the line from big to small. Then, they can cut each toy and glue into the Big and small sorting worksheet. have the students make sentences using the verb to be: It's a big robot. It's a small robot. Ask questions: Is this car big or small? Students: It's big! Take the time to review the emotions with this Lego Block worksheet. Toys Unit emotions worksheets to use for the thinking skills of sorting . More for the emotions using the toys unit vocabulary. There is a set of 3 drawing mats for the students to draw the emotions on each character. A matching the number to the word review with the robots, more of a cut and paste activity. Worksheets to review numbers, emotions and more!there is a worksheet for matching pictures to the shadow as a way to practice visual discrimination. There is a worksheet for counting how many toys and use the plural. Project/Inquiry Based Learning has been a passion of mine ever since I discovered it about 5 years ago. Since then, I have stepped out of my comfort zone and transformed the way I teach from a typical Thematic Based style through baby steps taken each year and with the help of an amazing on-line community of teachers with the same passion (you all know who you are!). My first baby step was taking themes and science/social studies standards and making them more student lead and project based. I got rid of the two week time limit each theme had in the past and allowed more time for students to dig deeper. I found that students would take my broad theme (oceans) and desire to dig deeper into more specific parts of the theme (sharks, jellyfish, ect.). As time went on, I was able to take the biggest step and totally let go of my themes and allowed the children's interests drive my instruction, incorporating the standards through those interests. I am blessed enough to also teach in a district that does not mandate the curriculum I use. Curriculum programs are purchased to use as tools for our toolbox but not required. Us teachers are trusted and encouraged by our superintendent to write our own curriculum as long as the standards are met. My building principle also has that kind of faith in us as professionals! They know that when it comes to children learning what they need to learn, we are the experts! Project/Inquiry Based Learning is highly encouraged in all grades Pre-K through 12. Some wonder how I plan for this style of teaching and how it flows. Here are some of the tools that I use. Once I notice an interest from the students (usually found out through experiences set up for them to explore during play) , I find out what their knowledge and misconceptions are about the subject. Kind of like a KWL chart! I list all that they know about the subject we will dive into. Then I ask what they wonder. I list all of their questions. NOW I can plan! I take their wonderings and create a web map showing the different directions they want to take the inquiry and possible experiences that will help them find answers to their wonderings. I got this web map from the amazing Joanne Babalis and her amazing blog http://myclassroomtransformation.blogspot.com. On the back I have all of the Literacy and Math Standards listed so that I can highlight the ones we will focus on through the inquiry and project. I add any Science and Social Studies Standards to the bottom of the web map. Here is the link to the web map if you would like it: Web Organizer Here is the link to the Common Core Standards Sheet for Kindergarten Language and Math: Kindergarten CC Standards Once I organize my thoughts, I create my inquiry plan using a template I created based on one I found from a Texas school district. It was so long ago I have no memory of which district but if I find out I will add them to give them credit. Their form was 3 pages long. I tweaked it to fit it all on one page. I use this to show the objectives and vocabulary, plan the investigations and materials I will need, show how they will organize the data about what they have learned, possible projects that could result from the inquiry and how we will present the project to the community. Here is the link to this inquiry planner if you would like to download it: Inquiry/Project Planner The next step is to start the investigation phase. In early childhood I set out experiences for them to explore and document what they notice. We also do whole group and small group investigations through books, videos and hands-on experiences. As we answer questions, we add the answers to our wonder chart to show our new learning. We organize this data in a web map format for all to see. The start of an inquiry wall. Information is added to it as we learn. Once we have investigated we use organizational maps to show what we learn. In kindergarten it usually consists of web maps, circle maps, tree charts (can/have/are maps), and brace maps (to show part to whole). We will chose one or two to organize our data. The next step is the project. We take what we learn and create something to show it! The projects can be individual, small group, or whole group. Some examples of projects in our room have been turning an area of our room into an ocean, forest and sky to show how animals adapt in the winter. The kids signed up to be on the migration team, adaption team or hibernation team. They each became experts on their part during the investigation and worked on their part of the project. A cave, forest, sky and ocean were created to show what animals do in the winter. Animals were created, labeled and added to the habitats. A group interested in map making and migration created this map showing migration patterns of monarchs, geese and grey whales. Another project was our The Sound Exploration Area created for our school. They saw a need (an area to explore sound) investigated different ways of creating sound, organized the data and designed a Sound Exploration Area! An area for everyone in our school to explore sound which is in our science standards. They have also turned the inside of our room into a great hall and medeival kitchen and the outside of our room into a castle wall complete with moat and drawbridge after investigating castles! The outside of our castle. A map created by a group interested in maps and where different castles were found in the world. A big book created by a small group about who lived in castles. A small group project during our castle inquiry. They have created murals and big books to show their learning also. A mural planned and created by Kindergartners. The last step is the presentation to show what they had learned. The kids LOVE this part and I've never had a child refuse to present! They are so confident of what they have learned and proud of what they have done that they cannot wait to share it! I am always so impress with their speaking and listening skills during these presentations! Sometimes small groups go to other classrooms and present what they learned, sometimes we invite parents or other classes to our room to see our presentation, and sometimes we create a video to share with others. They create maps, big books, and, get to show off the projects created at this time! Showing what they have learned through these projects gives the projects an even bigger sense of purpose! They can't wait to show others what they have learned and done! Presenting different weapons used during medieval times. I have never had so much fun teaching in my 22 years as I have he past four years! I could never go back to the way I had done it I the past. The benefits of this way of teaching are not only meeting the standards (the old way did that too) but the 21st Century Skills they are forced to develope when they learn in this type of environment. When inquiring, investigating and creating within thier own interest, they are motivated to collaborate, problem solve, handle frustration, persist if things don't work the first time, and learn from their mistakes. They have to use critical thinking skills and develope research skills. When kids develop these skills, they can learn ANYTHING! My new passion that I am learning to incorporate in my classroom is Playbased Learning! I have been amazed by the learning taking place in this way also....but that's another post! SaveSave
