Spinning Yarn: Yarn has been spun on spindles for thousands of years. With a little fiber and a spindle, you too can participate in this oldest of alchemies. This instructable will show you how to spin a single from wool roving, using a top-whorl spindle.

Schacht's Hi-Lo Spindles offer the best of both whorls: a brass hook at the top for top/high-whorl spinning and a grooved shaft for bottom/low-whorl spinning. Schacht Hi-Lo Spindles are made of hard maple and finished with Danish Oil. Three sizes offer a broad spectrum of spinning capabilities: 2½" diameter – 1.1 oz (31g) Approximately 10 3/4" long end to end. 3" diameter – 2.2 oz (62g) Approximately 10 3/4" long end to end. 4" diameter – 3 oz (85g) Approximately 12 1/2" long end to end. Art yarn drop spindle with my handmade wood burned spiral design. This is a bottom whorl drop spindle made especially for spinning and plying chunky yarns. Easy to use, great for a beginner. Already spin on a wheel? Take your spinning on the go with one of my portable drop spindles. I made this spindle by hand using quality hardwoods. I make a wood burned spiral design on the top of the whorl, sand each inch of the wood, assemble with strong glue and a metal hook. More sanding and then I finish it with a food grade oil rub, followed by a natural beeswax buff. The overall length including the hook is about 12-13 inches. The length of the shaft above the whorl is about 8 and 5/8 inches, plenty of room for winding on lots of big yarn. The lower end measures 1 and 3/4 inches and has a blunt point that can be useful if you plan to spin it semi-supported. The width of the whorl is 3 inches. Weight: 2.4 ounces I like to spin everything from worsted weight to jumbo art yarns on this spindle. This is my personal favorite spindle for plying. All spindles have been tested by myself.
