Boy, I'm on a roll! I've gotten the Cadette tracker done and the Daisy tracker will be done today too. I hope you find this useful! I'll be a Cadette leader next year and making this tracker got me excited about taking the girls to the next level of Girl Scouting. This tracker allows troop leaders to document badge requirements for each girl. Includes all of the new Legacy and Journey badges in the Girls Guide to Girl Scouting. Each page includes one badge. For my troop, I printed the sheets in color, double-sided, then laminated them. To hold them together I hole-punched them laminated sheets and used a binder ring to hold them together. I placed stickers on the requirements so I can keep track. The girls got so excited looking through all of the badge choices in one place. A note about formatting: The tracker is available in Word [.doc] or .pdf format. If you are savvy with Word formatting, you can personalize the .doc tracker to your liking. In the 1970s, this was a crunchy granola way of thinking, as we were not as enlightened to the perils of air pollution like we are today. The quality of the air can have a direct effect on how we are feeling. As the mother of a son with asthma, air quality is very important to me. If you have ever had to change a dirty diaper, you know what I mean! There are scents which are pleasing to the nose, while others are quite offensive.In fact, people with severe allergies can have significant breathing problems when they are near a person or a group of people who are heavily perfumed. My synagogue politely requests that during the High Holy Day services of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur that we refrain from wearing perfume because of this problem. There is a sign in my son’s allergist’s office to please not come into the office wearing perfume. Relax-It's Good for You! To make the Journeys Program more interesting and fun for the girls, each one includes activities to help the girls learn the objective of the meeting and the overall goals of the Journey. For one meeting, the troop can make something that they can take home to help them relax and find time in their busy day to have a few minutes of downtime. These kits come in handy for this project. Finding time to decompress from the stress When life becomes overwhelming with work, family, chores, and everything else, some people find it hard to breathe. The stress gives them anxiety, and they begin to breathe in a shallow manner. They cannot relax and this exacerbates the problem even further. Stress begets more stress! The middle school years present all kinds of challenges-more homework and projects, sports, and other activities become more competitive and time consuming, and relationships with peers and are also changing. On meeting can focus on having the girls find a time and place to just relax. Put on some relaxing music and do some breathing exercises or practice some simple yoga poses. Fun Craft Girls can find meaning and inspiration from these beads. They can make necklaces, keychains, or put them on a piece of cardboard that has been covered with felt and glue them on. Click here to get copy Remembering Healthy Foods Have girls get into a circle, Leader start with ball or beanbag says “Fruit are a great healthy food. A Vegetable I like is…” Then pass to next girl she must say what you just said plus add another fruit. So “Vegetables are a great healthy food. Vegetables like are carrots and celery is what second girl would say next girl would add another, if girl can not think of one or forgets order have her sit down, continue around circle till last person standing. Start with a different type of healthy food. Types of food to use are: green leafy vegetables, colorful vegetables, grains, proteins (meat, nuts and beans) fruit and dairy products. Bad Skin and Healthy Skin – Food can affect it Put girls into two different groups; choose one girl to be the human bulletin board. One team will be for bad food, write Bad Food = Unhealthy Skin on post it and put on forehead of girl chosen on team to be bulletin board and on other team a post it that that says healthy food = Healthy skin put on her forehead. Set the time for 10 minutes, and have each team come up with as many foods that fit in that category, put one item of food on each post it and stick to the girl “Human Bulletin board” At the end of time have them take the post its off one at a time reading what foods they wrote down, team that figured out the most types of food wins. TELL GIRLS ABOUT HEALTHY SKIN: The basic diet for healthy skin is as follows: Avoid processed foods, choose natural foods Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables Choose low fat sources of protein such as chicken and fish not steak and hamburger Eat complex carbohydrates are like vegetables, skim milk, and whole grain cereals Drink fresh, clean (bottled if necessary) water Avoid sugar and simple carbohydrates which are things like candy, chocolate, biscuits, whole milk Beyond food that is good and bad for you. Now, more than ever, it has become crucial for you to check each product label in order to steer clear from harmful ingredients. Teach your girls about these 14 toxic ingredients to watch out for in skin care products. Play a game of How High Is the Sugar Content? (Price is Right) Give each girl a pile of sugar cubes, we will line up a number of products, the girls all have to guess how much sugar they think is in that item using the sugar cubes. Once they all have guessed reveal the answer (have cubes hidden under a cardboard piece that has how many grams wrote on it and shows cubes.) Tell the girls that the American Heart Association recommends women only have 26 grams of sugar a day. So make that comparison with some of the items like the pop and cookies. Eating Affects Your Sleeping Poster Create a Poster where one side shows you sleeping perfectly. Use pictures, magazines, and words, whatever you need to show around you what it means to sleep soundly. On other side show yourself not sleeping well and all the reasons why that may be happening around that picture. SHARE THIS INFO WITH GIRLS: Eating right and at the right time is necessary for the good sleep. Our body has its own internal clock, which sets our sleeping, and getting up times. Hormones of the body control and regulate this clock. The secretion of these hormones is effected by the way we eat and think. Helpful tips to get a better night sleep: Never go to sleep with full stomach, as it will cause heartburn and keep you awake. Eat three or four hours before going to sleep. Don’t go to bed with empty stomach, as it will trigger the glycogen to stimulate the brain to produce sleepless hormones. FOODS THAT HELP THE SLEEP: Tryptophan rich food: Tryptophan is the sleep inducing hormone and found in milk, banana, poultry products, oats, and in honey. Snack: boiled eggs or vegetables: Yogurt: It is one of the greatest sleep-inducing product and help for sleep if taken a bowl of yogurt before going to sleep. FOODS THAT AFFECTS THE SLEEP: High fats: foods with high fat content not only cause the increase in weight but also cause sleepless nights. Spicy foods: Cause of heartburn or if you have acid reflux the digestive system get disturb and causes sleepless. Chocolate and caffeinated foods: The caffeine and other stimulants present in coffee and chocolates activate the brain cells and keep the person awakened. High protein foods: source of increasing brain activity and cause the sleepless nights. Before going to bed avoid the proteins snacks and protein foods. Four Corner Exercising Put the exercise type on the wall one in each corner of room, put different workouts on other side of paper for second round. Girls must choose a sign to stand next to. Then draw out one of the exercises, if they are standing in that corner they do not do the exercise, everyone else must do the exercise they are next to, perform the exercise the number of times they are old (Example if they are 10 they do 10 reps) Once done girls choose a new corner to stand at and again choose a exercise. Do three rounds of this exercise and then flip paper over and do 4 different exercises. Then end the game by doing the elimination version, last person standing, if you call exercise they are standing by they are out have them do move before sitting down. Continue till only 1 left standing. ROUND 1: Push Ups, Sit up or crunch, Mountain Climbers, Jumping Jacks ROUND 2: Lunges, Knee lifts, Burpies, Squats After game tell girls to choose healthy snack vs. chips or cookies, to keep your energy up. Glow Sticks Yoga/Relaxation Workouts in the Dark Give each girl two glow sticks and do the below moves and exercises This partner stretch will allow the girls to be mindful of each other while they relax. Have the girls find a partner and sit on the floor. Say slowly and calmly to the girls “Face your partner, open your legs comfortably and touch your feet with your partner’s feet. Tell girls lean forward and grasp each other’s hands. One partner leans back, slowly pulling your partner forward. Now the second partner will lean back and pull their partner slowly forward. This exercise helps girls focus on breathing, helping them achieve rest and balance. Have the girls sit comfortably on the floor or mat. Slowly and calmly tell the girls “In the winter, bears hibernate in caves, sleeping peacefully. Sit up tall, close your eyes, and go inside. Through your nose, breathe in for a count of five, and then hold for a count of three. Breathe out for a count of five, then hold for a count of three.” Repeat this instruction 5 times. Then say, “Open your eyes and notice how you feel.” Be sure to allow girls time to finish each step after you say it. Have girl spread out so they can make big movements without hitting anyone. Explain that you are going to call out natural phenomena’s. As each word is called out, the girls should use there body and their voices to act out the word however they choose. They should continue making the movements until you call out the next word. You can call out the words as slowly or quickly as you like. Natural phenomena: storm cloud tree rainbow tornado waves fire river Food Sorting Game Knowing which foods are only good to have occasionally and which ones to eat regularly is one of the first steps to healthier eating. Help your kids learn which foods are daily foods and which foods are sometimes foods with this fun sorting game. Here is a free printable for this sorting activity. I've been a slacker in getting my Activity Day activities posted as of late...my apologies. So while I was putting this one together I thought I would make a better effort of getting a few pictures and getting it posted. All of my girls will be turning 12 this year...I'm slowly loosing them all to YW :( I thought it would be a fun idea to make babysitting kits, since 12 seems to be the standard age when you start to get those babysitting calls. So you can imagine how excited I was when I came across THIS little kit at Wendy's Activities. So cute and full of great ideas...and, did I mention it was already done and put together! All I had do was print. Love it when other people do the work for me! I printed up these pages... Added them to these folders. Purchased these bags (Old Navy...$1.00). Found a few supplies for some of the games (a lot of them from around the house). Then for the activity we went over a few of the pages in the kit and then put together our games. I now have 8 {almost} 12 year old girls who are excited to get out there and get babysitting. Such a fun and effective way to introduce the whole babysitting experience.

Are you the leader of a Cadette Girl Scout troop? Here are some resources for you to use as you guide your middle school girls through this level of scouting. Cadette Leaders Need Practical Resources for Their Middle School Troop How many of you know a girl who was a Girl Scout past the fifth grade? If you are like most people, not many. When girls begin their adventures in Girl Scouting, they are as young as five years old and in kindergarten. Everything is exciting to them, and they are very happy with crafts, field trips and an occasional guest speaker. As the girls become Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts, it becomes more challenging keeping them engaged. They want more outdoor adventures like camping and fun overnights at museums and party places. As their leader, you do your best to comply with what they want while attempting to keep your own sanity. Photo from Pixabay By the time the girls finish the Junior level at the end of fifth grade, there is a dramatic drop in their ranks. As puberty hits full throttle and what other people think becomes more important, the coolness factor of scouting plummets and many girls no longer want to be associated with the movement. For my troop, this has not been our experience. I was the leader for six years, and this upcoming year I am stepping down from that role and moving to a co-leadership position. A friend of mine will be the leader, and ten of our eleven girls will become Cadette Girl Scouts. We are also very fortunate that the principal of our school is a former Girl Scout who earned her Gold Award years ago. She is a positive role model for our girls. The Challenges of Being a Cadette Leader Middle School Girls Are Not the Easiest to Be With! As a mother who has been through the middle school years once before, I can honestly say that I am not looking forward to replaying the drama of these early teen years. Relational aggression (female bullying), cliques, first heartbreaks, and monitoring social media use was challenging. Cadette leaders have to deal with all of this with girls who are not their daughters. Many times, a troop will inherit new girls at this stage because the girls' former troops have disbanded and are no longer viable. The girls wish to remain in scouting, but need someone to take them in. Leaders must be very aware of integrating new girls into their established troop and making sure that they are welcomed and accepted by the others. We are all sisters in scouting, and this is a great opportunity for new friends to be made. Cliques and leaving other girls out is not an acceptable behavior and needs to be thwarted. The Biggest Challenge Facing Cadette Leaders There is competition for your time! Photo from Pixabay As girls get older, their lives get busier. Once upon a time,dance and athletics were a fun activity. Many girls, including those in my troop, participate on travel teams for sports or competition teams for dance. This means hours of travel and practice that will interfere with Girl Scout activities. In middle school, girls are introduced to after school clubs. These may bring new friends and new interests that will also occupy their time and lessen their involvement with Girl Scouting. Photo from Stoonn via freedigitalphotos.net Then there is homework. Modern society dictates that more homework is good, so teachers pile it on. For high achieving students, this extra workload can be a challenge, but for those who struggle in school, this creates more problems. Homework has to come first, even at the expense of a Girl Scout activity or meeting. Peer pressure is also a challenge. No matter how you slice it, Girl Scouts is not considered a cool activity. Adult leaders need to combat that with activities that the girls vote on and plan. When other middle schoolers find out that the scouts in their grade slept over in a museum, went on a long weekend to a water park resort or saved all their cookie money for a trip to Disney, then the cool factor is upped significantly. As the girls get older, meetings are supposed to be more "girl led", but with cliques, absences and forgetfulness, things might not get accomplished as they would with a responsible adult in charge. Of course, this is a life lesson that needs to be learned. As the leader, you are transferring the role of leadership to the girls. Here are some great resources on how to do that, as well as how to run your meetings, select badges and community service projects, plus how to do a Journey. Think Like a Citizen Scientist is one of the newer STEM Journies GSUSA put out in the last few years. This post is an attempt to summarize the lengthy VTK plans into an easy-to-read quick resource. Once you have decided to lead the Journey at a particular level, I highly recommend reviewing the VTK plans and their talking points. I also recommend going to the GSUSA store and downloading the (at this writing) free packet for this Journey. It does the best job of explaining the TAP process of anything I've seen GSUSA publish The way these Journeys are designed, it is clear that the TAP is an integral part. The purpose of the Journey is learn scientific skills and then to apply those skills to conceiving, planning and carrying out a TAP. If you as a leader are trying to come up with TAP ideas before the Journey ever starts, you are doing it wrong. As the girls are brainstorming for their TAP the girls are reminded that the same process is used in developing projects for the Silver and Gold Awards and that they can use projects the group decides not to do, or they can expand on a group idea or design other projects to solve the same problems. I know people hate the long VTK scripts but while I have not worked with older girls, it seems to me that the questions and talking points give the girls direction in picking the TAP. Unless they've revised the plans since I reviewed them, one complaint I had about the younger girls' plans for the "Think Like A..." Journeys is that they gave detailed scripts for content part of the Journey but almost no direction for the TAP and how to pull one out of the girls. Simply put, I think you are doing yourself and your girls a disfavor if you do not at least review the VTK plans before starting this Journey. If you don't want to dig your way through VTK, Girl Scouts Farthest North has them publically available on their website. Just scroll to the bottom of this page. Requirements According the the Badge Explorer, in this Journey, Cadettes will: Find out how citizen scientists make observations, collect data, and help scientists conduct scientific research. Do 3 citizen science activities: make observations about your environment, create a community field guide, and a SciStarter project. Plan a Take Action project that helps others. The Senior requirements are: Find out how citizen scientists make observations, collect data, and help scientists conduct scientific research. Do 3 citizen science activities: make observations about your environment, design a way to test a hypothesis, and a SciStarter project. Plan a Take Action project that helps others. Ambassadors Find out how citizen scientists make observations, collect data, and help scientists conduct scientific research. Do 3 observation sessions of a citizen science project from SciStarter. Collect data from your community and plan a Take Action project that helps others. As it does for all the Journies now, VTK gives meeting plans that call for earning this Journey over six meetings. While VTK includes multi-level plans for other Journeys for older girls, there is no C/S/A plan for older girls for this Journey. However, the multi-level plans for the other Journeys are basically the Senior plan so I'll be you can figure out how to handle it. If you are interested in the younger girl versions of this Journey, they are summarized here. Meeting 1: Cadettes begin this Journey by reviewing some observations made by famous scientists and brainstorming what they might mean. Cards with the observations on one side and the story on the other are provided in VTK. One is that the scientist noted that mold grew on his petri dish, but the bacteria he was studying all died near the mold. Seniors' opening activity has cards with scientific discoveries on one side, and the story on the other. For example, one card talks about natural selection, and the story on the other side is about Darwin. Girls are to brainstorm what type of experiment might have led to the discovery. Ambassadors begin with cards with quotes from famous scientists. They review them and then create a tip sheet for those doing observations. After the opening ceremony and any necessary business is concluded, the leader shows the videos from the SciStarter website which describe various Citizen Science projects. Citizen Science projects are not random science experiments; rather they are projects in which ordinary citizens observe things in their area and contribute the data to projects run by real scientists. If the leader is not able to download or stream the videos, she can describe the projects verbally. The leader explains that during this Journey girls will learn to use the scientific method to answer questions about the world and to help others. They will participate in a Citizen Science project and do a Take Action Project. The TAP can include another Citizen Science project, but you have to connect the project to your community or use what you did on the project to educate and inspire others. Cadettes practice observation and data recordation by observing their surroundings for twenty minutes and taking notes. It is recommended that troops go outside for this activity, but it can be done indoors and include observations of people. After making observations, Cadettes find the three most interesting facts and develop scientific questions about them, and then create hypotheses to answer those questions. Girls share these with each other. Seniors do pretty much the same thing, but instead of putting their observations on plain paper, they use a form from VTK. Also, they take things one step further--after developing the hypothesis, they develop an experiment to test the hypothesis. After picking their Citizen Science project, Ambassadors talk about the scientific method, identify the questions they are trying to answer by participating in that project, and to form a hypothesis about what they will observe. After a discussion on observation and data gathering skills, Ambassadors complete their Sci Starter project. At the end of the meeting, the leader asks if they observed anything harmful or disruptive to nature and then asks for the girls to brainstorm problems they believe the scientific method could solve. Girls are asked to use their observation skills between this meeting and the next to find problems they could solve. Meeting 2 Cadettes begin the second meeting by making lists of local, national and global problems they have observed. During the business portion of the meeting they discuss what communities they are part of or which are nearby and decide on a community to impact with their Take Action Project. They then brainstorm problems faced by that community and how the scientific method could be used to solve those problems. Girls do not pick a Take Action Project at this time. Cadettes then move on to viewing more SciStarter projects and then pick on or more to complete at the next meeting. Next they talk about data collection and tools that can help with data collection such as measuring tapes, magnifying classes and cameras. Then Cadettes do another session of observation, observing whatever they selected at the last meeting as being worthy of further study. They take field notes and talk about what should be included in field notes. They talk about what their data might mean and about combining their observations with the observations of others. They put their notes together to create a field guide to the object of their observations. The VTK talking points for the closing have the leader pulling together the observation and data collection process with the process for deciding on a TAP. Seniors start off by listing all the communities they are part of. After discussion, they pick a community to impact with their TAP. They talk about how science could be used to solve the problems they found, but do not pick a TAP at this time. After picking a community to serve, Seniors then watch more SciStarter videos and pick SciStarter project. Next, they talk about data collection tools as the Cadettes did, and then move on to performing the experiment they decided on in meeting 1, to test their hypothesis, and they record the data. They talk about the data they collected and whether it supported their hypothesis. The leader talking points at the end of the meeting relate the scientific method to solving problems via a Take Action Project. As Ambassadors arrive they look at the problems identified at the last meeting, as well as any they have observed since then and list the impacts of those problems on both a local and global level. Girls pick one community to affect with their TAP and then list members of that community and groups and organizations that are part of that community. Next, they look at the problems they they observed and how they affect the chosen community. They talk about how science can help solve those problems. From there, Ambassadors take a look at the data collected during the previous meeting and talk about whether it supported their hypothesis. Then the leader talks about multiple trials and iteration and the girls perform another set of observations related to their SciStarter project. They compare the results with their first observations and upload the data to the SciStarter website. Ambassadors then talk about their TAP. They look at problems they identified earlier and how those problems affect the community they have chosen for their TAP. They take out any problems that don't affect their chosen community and then pick on problem on which to focus for their TAP. Next they brainstorm about data they could collect to help them solve the problem. They could collect data through online research, interviewing people, or observation. They could also choose another Citizen Science project. They make a plan to gather data at their next meeting. Meeting 3 For Cadettes, the third meeting begins with a game. The problems identified at prior meetings are written on cards and put in a bowl. The girls sit in a circle. A girl draws a card, and then asks a question she has about the problem. If another girl can answer the question, she throws a ball to that girl. If no girl can answer, then the question is added to a list. The ball is then thrown to another girl, who asks another question about the same problem. The process repeats until all the girls have asked questions about the first problem. Then they go on to another. For example, if the problem is poverty, you might ask: Why are people poor? What does our community already do to combat poverty? Who does poverty impact the most in our community? During the meeting opening, the girls pick a problem to address with their TAP, looking at the same factors the Seniors consider (see below). This is the meeting at which Cadettes do their SciStarter project, and they follow pretty much the same procedure as the Seniors and the leader talking points for the closing are similar to the Seniors' (see below). Seniors begin their third meeting by reviewing the problems identified in the prior meetings and then coming up with a hypothesis about why the problem exists. They are trying to do a root cause analysis. Next, the Seniors look at the problems they have identified and cross reference them with the community chosen in the prior meeting. They look at which problem is most important to the chosen commuity, which affects the most people in the community, which one they are most interested in and which one are they in the best position to address, among other things. They pick one problem to address in their TAP. Seniors begin their SciStarter project, following the directions on the website. Before they begin their observations, Seniors are asked to identify the question they are trying to anwer in the project and to come up with their own hypotheses. After making their observations, Seniors compare the data with their hypothesis before sending the data to SciStarter. Finally, in the closing the leader talking points relate the scientific method to developing a TAP. At the third meeting, Ambassadors begin by reviewing the data they collected at the prior meetings, along ewith the hypotheses they made and during the opening part of the meeting they discuss whether or not the data supports their hypothesis. They are then given the opportunity to reformulate thier hypothesis. This is followed by a third observation session of their SciStarter project, followed by a discussion regarding similarities and differences in the data collected in each session. From there, Ambassadors move on to gathering data for their Take Action Project, using the data collection plan they created at the last meeting. This part of the "meeting" may be done individually, or involve a trip or meeting with someone outside of the troop's regular meeting. In the wrap-up the leader talking points again relate the scientific method to the process of developing a TAP. Meeting 4 Dreaming big is important and Cadettes start Meeting 4 by dreaming big about their TAP. They brainstorm how they would solve their chosen problem, given unlimited time and resources. During the opening, the leader explains that they will be designing their TAP at this meeting, and will be using the scientific method to help them. However, the project does not have to include science. They can address any issue they choose, but will use observation and data collection to help them. The leader talking points guide girls through analyzing the problem and developing a root cause sustainable solution. The leader may need to arrange computer time or bring in a speaker to provide information on the problem. After the girls have researched the issue, they propose solutions to the problem and the girls pick one as their TAP. The rest of the meeting is spent planning how to do the TAP. When Seniors start meeting 4 they are asked to brainstorm how they could learn more about their chosen problem, given unlimited time and resources. In the opening, the leader addresses the same issues as in the Cadette plan above. Seniors discuss what they know about the problem to be addressed, and what they need to know. Seniors decide how they will collect the needed data. After they have gathered data Seniors make a hypothesis about the impact of their TAP and then develop the steps for their TAP. They talk about how they will evaluate whether the TAP met its goals. They spend the meeting planning the TAP. The leader talking points guide the girls through the process and relate it to the scientific method. The meeting ends with the girls creating "to-do" lists denoting what each girl is responsible for doing and what will be done as a group. Ambassadors, at the start of their fourth meeting, organize their data. They look at the questions asked about their subject problem at prior meetings, and the answers they have been able to find vs information they still need. Data is placed on sticky notes and during the meeting is organized into categories: Causes, Impacts, Evidence of Problems, Community Resources, and Community Threats. They talk about how they will evaluate the success of their project, the goals of the project, and how they will measure the impact of the project. Next, the girls work in groups to propose solutions to the problem and to set out a method for accomplishing that solution. Then the troop comes together, hears the ideas and creates one high level solution to use as their TAP. The girls create to-do lists and break the project down into tasks to be accomplished and decide who is to do what. Meeting 5 For all three levels, girls spend Meeting 5 working on their Take Action Project and planning a celebration for Meeting 6. That celebration should include presenting the TAP to the invited guests. The VTK meeting notes specifically state that it may take more than one meeting to complete the TAP, and that it is ok if that happens. Meeting 6 In Meeting 6 the girls present their TAP to guests and then receive their awards. Do not feel guilty asking for the money-after all, you volunteer many hours of your time for free! If you have ever had to change a dirty diaper, you know what I mean! There are scents which are pleasing to the nose, while others are quite offensive.In fact, people with severe allergies can have significant breathing problems when they are near a person or a group of people who are heavily perfumed. My synagogue politely requests that during the High Holy Day services of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur that we refrain from wearing perfume because of this problem. There is a sign in my son’s allergist’s office to please not come into the office wearing perfume. Relax-It's Good for You! To make the Journeys Program more interesting and fun for the girls, each one includes activities to help the girls learn the objective of the meeting and the overall goals of the Journey. For one meeting, the troop can make something that they can take home to help them relax and find time in their busy day to have a few minutes of downtime. These kits come in handy for this project. Finding time to decompress from the stress When life becomes overwhelming with work, family, chores, and everything else, some people find it hard to breathe. The stress gives them anxiety, and they begin to breathe in a shallow manner. They cannot relax and this exacerbates the problem even further. Stress begets more stress! On meeting can focus on having the girls find a time and place to just relax. Put on some relaxing music and do some breathing exercises or practice some simple yoga poses. Updated February 2022 Relational aggression-girls bullying girls-is an unfortunate part of growing up. The Amaze Cadette Journey was created to help girls get along with each other and help put a stop to this. *This post contains affiliate links. Addressing Relational Aggression in Girls With the Cadette Amaze Journey As a mother, one thing that has amazed me is how little some things have changed since my own childhood. I am not talking about the world of technology-that has taken on a life of its own since the invention of the personal computer and cell phones.I am talking about girls and relational aggression. Just about every woman I have spoken to about this issue can think back to her past and remember who the mean girl was who made every girls life around her miserable. She was a child whom others both feared and revered. Girls feared her because they did not want to be her next target, so they revered her to stay on her good side. Life without her was infinitely easier, and her presence could change the dynamic of a group. So here we are in 2022, and how girls act towards one another still has not changed. Even with anti-bullying laws and Zero Tolerance policies in schools, relational aggression among girls still exists, just as it had in my own childhood. Except that it is worse. Apps can create non-existent conversations and pictures can be photoshopped to create online lies that spread faster than any virus. The Girl Scout Cadette Amaze Journey seeks to address the issue of relational aggression that is so prevalent with this age group. Amaze Leader Guide from Amazon What is Relational Aggression? When I was in the third grade in 1973, I had two best friends. “Michelle” lived on the second floor of my apartment building and “Karen” lived in the building next to ours. The three of us played together for our entire lives, but in the third grade, things changed. For the first time, we were all in the same class, and Karen started playing one against the other. As an adult, I can see that she was a selfish and unsure of herself, so she would choose her favorite friend of the moment and give the other the deep freeze. I can vividly remember standing in line in the gym, where all classes met before going to our classrooms. Karen draped her fashionable crocheted poncho over their two heads to tell secrets. They created their own little world and would not let me in. When the poncho flipped back and they emerged, they would look at me to see if I had noticed them. That is relational aggression. Adults can see a child physically go after another, but the head games girls play with each other are far from obvious and oftentimes go unnoticed.The emotional scars of this “mean girl” syndrome run deep and never fully go away. Girls who are the victim may find their grades dropping due to their focus on the social issues they face each day at school. They may feel depressed and get “sick” more often so they can avoid the daily torture they face. We now know of the permanent scars and ramifications words can tattoo on a person's psyche.The following resources will help adult leaders see things and provide a springboard for discussion for the girls. Stand Up for Yourself and Your Friends: Dealing with Bullies and Bossiness and Finding a Better Way from Amazon This book is a rare one-an across the board five star rating from Amazon reviewers. This book helps girls spot bullying situations, how to respond to them, and when to report them with necessary. Sharing excerpts from this book, especially the quizzes, will help start the discussions that need to be had. Molly's Pilgrim Molly's Pilgrim from Amazon This classic tale of bullying was written by Barbara Cohen. It takes place in the early 1900's, when many immigrants came to America seeking a greater opportunity for their families, as well as religious freedom. Molly and her parents are from Russia, and when they move to a small town in upstate New York, the prejudice and bullying begin. This is a short book but ripe for a full blown discussion. The Hundred Dresses The Hundred Dresses, written Eleanor Estes and illustrated by Louis Slobodkin, is a Newberry Honor book. Written in 1944, it tells the story of Wanda Petronski, the motherless daughter of a Polish immigrant. Wanda is teased by the other girls because she tells them that she has “one hundred dresses all lined up in a row in her closet”, yet she wears the same faded blue dress to school each day. She is also teased for her “funny” last name, where she lives and how she speaks. Peggy and Maddie, the two girls who teased her the worst, go to her home to tell her that she won the class drawing contest see the hundred dresses. Site Updated January 2023 *This post contains affiliate links. The Girl Scouts of the USA introduced the new Journeys program back in 2008. While it has met with leader resistance due to the wordiness and lack of imaginative activity, it is a necessary part of the Girl Scouting program as the girls get older. In order to earn the Girl Scout Junior Bronze Award, the girls in the troop must first complete a journey. While the Bronze Award is not necessary to earn the higher level awards, if a scout wants to achieve the Gold Award-the highest award a girl can earn-she must first earn the Cadette Silver Award or do two Senior or Ambassador Journeys. One thing that Girl Scout leaders are known for is their resourcefulness. That is why they have taken the initiative and have redone the Journeys to make them more fun for the girls to work on. This website is a resource for the three Cadette Journeys, as well as the Silver Award. The MEdia Journey is all about how the media portrays things as they really are not-including how women and girls should look. With self-esteem issues due to their changing bodies running rampant in this age group, this is an important journey to study. The Amaze Journey is all about bullying and relational aggression. This is a timely topic due to the fact that it peaks during the middle school years, when girls are Cadette Scouts. The Breathe Journey is all about the air we breathe, pollution, and also about finding time in our own lives to breathe. Girls today have hectic schedules and they need to learn how to stop and unwind periodically. Each blog page is devoted to one journey. Resources will be updated as they become available.
