Cadette Badge: The Science of Happiness I will admit initially I was not thrilled about doing this badge. How in the world was I going to present this information and keep the girls interested? However, there is a website that will change your life! It is one of those hidden gems I never would have found had it not been for the GS Badge. After presenting this information to my girls, I feel I have given them valuable information that will positively impact their life now and into the future. How many times is your daughter disappointed, sad, not pleased with her body or self image, frustrated, stressed or concentrates on the negative, rather than the positives in her life? Oh my goodness, my daughter is 13 and a basket full of emotions that swings in the wind. One moment she is happy, the next moment she is sad or upset or frustrated. It's hard to watch your child suffer through the mood swings of life, even though it was not long ago and we were in the midst of this childhood chaos ourselves. Hormones, acne, boys, tests, early mornings, late nights, extra-curricular activities... it's a wonder we survived! My true profession is nursing and although I am not currently working, I know all too often anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications are prescribed to help people manage stress. However, now there is a website designed to teach and promote happiness. A totally different approach to the management of stress and unhappiness. This site tells us what we should already know... we control our own happiness. The site offers skills and encouragement and teaches you the Science behind Happiness. www.Happify.com Here you will find everything you need to create a great meeting. The site has stories, videos, suggestions, skills... and more. So what exactly did I do for my meeting. 1. The girls enjoyed a 30 minute Free Yoga class provided by Ivivvia in our town square which is a large outdoor mall. This company is amazing. It supports the girls in their community by offering free classes, parties, donations, takes photos and promotes active girls and more. The yoga class offered them a positive way to deal with stress, encourages activity and promotes self awareness and positive body image. 2. The girls took a quick GS Quiz and we evaluated and discussed our answers. Girls had some great input. 3. I created notes and passed them out to the girls. We read through each section including: What isn't Happiness & what is the definition of Happiness What is stress and how can you turn it into ProStress 5 Skills that will Learn Happiness Simple Acts to Feel Happier 4. We concentrated on the skill of THANKS & gratitude. We talked about the concept of Random Acts of Kindness and how it can make you feel to be a recipient or a giver. We also discussed the domino affect. Each girl was given $5. They were tasked to get into groups of 3 girls and do a good deed or random act of kindness. They had one hour to look for an opportunity to positively change someone's day. They were not required to spend the money, in fact they could save it or buy themselves a yogurt or coffee if they could find a way to do a good deed without the money. The girls voted on the best act of kindness that was completed. Here are the acts that the girls managed to complete: bought a coffee for the person behind them in line exchanged $1 for nickels and handed to children in commons area to throw into fountain bought an ice cream for a child taped $5 to library window with note that said buy a children's book on me purchased pretty post-its from Barnes and Nobles and wrote 25 positive notes an stuck them on windshields of cars in the parking lot or handed to people walking (GIRLS VOTED THIS #1) paid a compliment to a stranger opened a door for a busy mom listened to a musician, left a tip and told him how talented her was (compliment) Tipped a bus boy at a restaurant Girls were asked to write down 3 things they are thankful for in the next week, avoiding the common items like family, home, food, pets, finds etc Try to identify 3 stressors they encounter in the next week and turn them into pro-stressors Look for another opportunity for a random act of kindness and evaluate it's effect To view or print my notes & Quiz and save yourself some time CLICK HERE
The Animal Helpers badge is part of the “It's Your Story- Tell It!” badge set introduced in 2011. The Special Agent badge is a truly fun and unique badge which any age can enjoy. As we know gaining the attention of a Cadette or 13 year old teenager is difficult at best, so I cranked it up a gear to make this badge exciting. I invited a Dallas Private Investigator to our meeting and asked him to bring some high tech toys. He was a fabulous guest speaker and once he opened the discussion for questions the girls could not wait to talk with him. He hit on the topics of forensic science and talked about blood splatter and luminol. Did you know luminol only allows blood to glow for 30 seconds and every second the blood is exposed to the UV light it degrades, destroying some of the properties of the blood and DNA? Did you know that teeth are just as reliable at identifying a person as the human fingerprint? Did you know that you can determine how often, how recent and what drugs have been used by a person from one strand of hair? Our PI was filled with great and fascinating facts. Did you know every glitter placed in cosmetics, on clothes or crafts are different? Every company that manufactures glitter has to enter their exact dimensions, shape and refractory into a database. Any glitter at a crime scene can be identified. The girls most enjoyed using all his fun, high tech gadgets like the key fob that was actually a camera. A special photography lens that could take accurate pictures over 50 ft away... in the dark! A pen with a special voice recording device. Sunglasses with special lenses so he could see behind him. A water bottle equipped with a hidden camera. The PI gave the girls tips on how he follows a suspect in a car. He explained how you should try and drive in their blind spot, time stoplights and drive an inconspicuous, plain vehicle. He talked about difficult insurance fraud cases where he was staked out in front of houses, sometimes days, waiting for suspects to falter. He talked about interviewing neighbors to get clues about a suspect's reliability or demeanor. Finally he talked about the importance of fingerprints. He revieewed the different patterns that can identify suspects. He even fingerprinted each girl and allowed them to fingerprint their buddy and then we analyzed the prints. Once our amazing guest left, the girls were ready to become spies themselves so we discussed the Morse Code. The girls were given a special Morse Code Cheat Sheet which helped them decipher the code in less than a minute. Using a website designed to teach Morse Code the girls identified each letter of the alphabet. http://www.learnmorsecode.com/www1.mp3 Next I created 2 mystery codes using a fun website. I offered a prize for the girls who could crack the code. They really enjoyed this exercise and we learned a lot about the art of secret communication. http://www.morseresource.com/morse/makemorse.php FYI: I used Quicktime to record the Morse Code alphabet and secret message and then I e-mailed the audio clip to myself so I could play it on my phone for the girls. You could also burn a CD of the audio clips and play on a computer or CD player. If you don't have access to Quick Time, you could record the audio clip using your voice recorder on your phone as well. I use this feature on my phone quite a bit and not just for voice memos. My notes for this discussion cover topics in Forensic Science, Fingerprinting and the Morse Code with the 1 Minute Morse Code Cheat Sheet. I am happy to -email them to you: [email protected]
The Digital Movie Maker badge is part of the “It's Your World - Change It!” badge set introduced in 2011. There’s so much more to filming than just pointing and shooting. You don’t need to know as much as a pro does, but it’s important to “frame” what you’re looking at and keep your camera steady so your shots are nice and smooth. CHOICES – DO ONE: Connect with a local expert to learn filming basics. Maybe it’s someone at your local news station or, perhaps, a digital arts teacher at a nearby

Boy, I'm on a roll! I've gotten the Cadette tracker done and the Daisy tracker will be done today too. I hope you find this useful! I'll be a Cadette leader next year and making this tracker got me excited about taking the girls to the next level of Girl Scouting. This tracker allows troop leaders to document badge requirements for each girl. Includes all of the new Legacy and Journey badges in the Girls Guide to Girl Scouting. Each page includes one badge. For my troop, I printed the sheets in color, double-sided, then laminated them. To hold them together I hole-punched them laminated sheets and used a binder ring to hold them together. I placed stickers on the requirements so I can keep track. The girls got so excited looking through all of the badge choices in one place. A note about formatting: The tracker is available in Word [.doc] or .pdf format. If you are savvy with Word formatting, you can personalize the .doc tracker to your liking. If you would rather hand write in the names of the girls and not worry about formatting, download the .pdf. You can download the tracker Word tracker here or the .pdf tracker here.

Cadettes Netiquette Badge I did nothing earth shattering with my girls to earn this badge, it was an open discussion forum. Typically my girls do not like discussions of any kind. However, I was pleasantly surprised the girls had a lot of input and helped to guide the topics. My biggest challenge was keeping them focused and limiting the endless stories. We covered several key components: Ownership of electronical devices - all devices are owned by parents until the age of 18 and parents have the right to limit or deny their use Misconstrued texts Example of texts that can prove to be dangerous How texts and internet relationships can be beneficial New apps that deceive parents - downloading free text apps and hiding conversations Snapchat - new app much like Instagram or Facebook, but deletes comments and photos after 5 seconds giving the false perception that the conversations or photos cannot be saved. Kids have learned how to save the texts and photos. Accidental texts (or as the girls call it: butt texting) and auto-correct spelling issues Do 's and Don't of blogging Impersonation (create a Dream Instagram profile) - giving girls a quick realization that you can be anyone on the internet, you should always be true to yourself and NEVER create false profiles Cyber-bullying - It only takes 2 girls to stand up for a victim in a bullying situation to END the negative behavior! Following our conversation I had the girls make their own list of the Top 10 things to remember about the internet and safety. We compiled a list from all the girls and it was read on the morning announcements at their school. Finally, they each signed the GS Internet Safety Pledge and a copy was given to each parent. Notes and Hand-Outs. For the badges released in 2011, scouts must complete all of the activities listed to earn the badge. What would make you happiest? Money? Cool clothes? Living in a mansion on a tropical island? Such things may make you happy for a while, but science shows they aren’t what keep you happy in the long run. What is? Pleasure, engagement, and meaning (see the redbox for more information).

Are you the leader of a Cadette Girl Scout troop? Here are some resources for you to use as you guide your middle school girls through this level of scouting. Updated February 2022 *This post contains affiliate links. Cadette Leaders Need Practical Resources for Their Middle School Troop How many of you know a girl who was a Girl Scout past the fifth grade? If you are like most people, not many. When girls begin their adventures in Girl Scouting, they are as young as five years old and in kindergarten. Everything is exciting to them, and they are very happy with crafts, field trips and an occasional guest speaker. As the girls become Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts, it becomes more challenging keeping them engaged. They want more outdoor adventures like camping and fun overnights at museums and party places. As their leader, you do your best to comply with what they want while attempting to keep your own sanity. Photo from Pixabay By the time the girls finish the Junior level at the end of fifth grade, there is a dramatic drop in their ranks. As puberty hits full throttle and what other people think becomes more important, the coolness factor of scouting plummets and many girls no longer want to be associated with the movement. For my troop, this has not been our experience. I was the leader for six years, and this upcoming year I am stepping down from that role and moving to a co-leadership position. A friend of mine will be the leader, and ten of our eleven girls will become Cadette Girl Scouts. We are also very fortunate that the principal of our school is a former Girl Scout who earned her Gold Award years ago. She is a positive role model for our girls. The Challenges of Being a Cadette Leader Middle School Girls Are Not the Easiest to Be With! As a mother who has been through the middle school years once before, I can honestly say that I am not looking forward to replaying the drama of these early teen years. Relational aggression (female bullying), cliques, first heartbreaks, and monitoring social media use was challenging. Cadette leaders have to deal with all of this with girls who are not their daughters. Many times, a troop will inherit new girls at this stage because the girls' former troops have disbanded and are no longer viable. The girls wish to remain in scouting, but need someone to take them in. Leaders must be very aware of integrating new girls into their established troop and making sure that they are welcomed and accepted by the others. We are all sisters in scouting, and this is a great opportunity for new friends to be made. Cliques and leaving other girls out is not an acceptable behavior and needs to be thwarted. A Smart Girl's Guide: Middle School (Revised): Everything You Need to Know About Juggling More Homework, More Teachers, and More Friends! (Smart Girl's Guides) from Amazon This book, as well as the original version, has been a source of comfort and an invaluable resource for both of my daughters. The Biggest Challenge Facing Cadette Leaders There is competition for your time! Photo from Pixabay As girls get older, their lives get busier. Once upon a time, dance and athletics were a fun activity. Many girls, including those in my troop, participate on travel teams for sports or competition teams for dance. This means hours of travel and practice that will interfere with Girl Scout activities. In middle school, girls are introduced to after school clubs. These may bring new friends and new interests that will also occupy their time and lessen their involvement with Girl Scouting. Photo from Stoonn via freedigitalphotos.net Then there is homework. Modern society dictates that more homework is good, so teachers pile it on. For high achieving students, this extra workload can be a challenge, but for those who struggle in school, this creates more problems. Homework has to come first, even at the expense of a Girl Scout activity or meeting. Peer pressure is also a challenge. No matter how you slice it, Girl Scouts is not considered a cool activity. Adult leaders need to combat that with activities that the girls vote on and plan. When other middle schoolers find out that the scouts in their grade slept over in a museum, went on a long weekend to a water park resort or saved all their cookie money for a trip to Disney, then the cool factor is upped significantly. A Smart Girl's Guide: Friendship Troubles (Revised): Dealing with fights, being left out & the whole popularity thing (Smart Girl's Guides) from Amazon Online Resources for Cadette Leaders Starting at a new level is always a challenge. As the girls get older, meetings are supposed to be more "girl led", but with cliques, absences and forgetfulness, things might not get accomplished as they would with a responsible adult in charge. Of course, this is a life lesson that needs to be learned. As the leader, you are transferring the role of leadership to the girls. Here are some great resources on how to do that, as well as how to run your meetings, select badges and community service projects, plus how to do a Journey. Site Updated January 2023 *This post contains affiliate links. The Girl Scouts of the USA introduced the new Journeys program back in 2008. While it has met with leader resistance due to the wordiness and lack of imaginative activity, it is a necessary part of the Girl Scouting program as the girls get older. In order to earn the Girl Scout Junior Bronze Award, the girls in the troop must first complete a journey. While the Bronze Award is not necessary to earn the higher level awards, if a scout wants to achieve the Gold Award-the highest award a girl can earn-she must first earn the Cadette Silver Award or do two Senior or Ambassador Journeys. Clip art from Pixabay and image created in Picmonkey and Canva by the author In order to do this, she must complete a Journey sometime during her three years as a Cadette Scout. One thing that Girl Scout leaders are known for is their resourcefulness. That is why they have taken the initiative and have redone the Journeys to make them more fun for the girls to work on. This website is a resource for the three Cadette Journeys, as well as the Silver Award. The MEdia Journey is all about how the media portrays things as they really are not-including how women and girls should look. With self-esteem issues due to their changing bodies running rampant in this age group, this is an important journey to study. The Amaze Journey is all about bullying and relational aggression. This is a timely topic due to the fact that it peaks during the middle school years, when girls are Cadette Scouts. The Breathe Journey is all about the air we breathe, pollution, and also about finding time in our own lives to breathe. Girls today have hectic schedules and they need to learn how to stop and unwind periodically. Each blog page is devoted to one journey. Resources will be updated as they become available. If you find any resources of your own, please let me know and I will add them to each article. Tips for retaining your older Girl Scouts can be found in this leader guide. Updated September 2022 What is the Cadette Girl Scout Silver Award? There are three levels of Girl Scout Awards-the Bronze (earned when girls are in Junior troops), the Silver (earned when girls are Cadettes) and Gold (an individual project girls must complete before they graduate high school). While leaders do have a hand in helping the girls earn the highest award at this level, they are truly a guide at the side. Image Created on Canva First, the girl must complete at least one of the three Journeys at this level. Then the girls have to pick a project that they want to work on alone or with a group. There is a lot of planning that goes on with this, but as an older girl, she needs to stand on her own two feet to figure out what will work and what will not. These projects are meant to "make the world a better place", an integral part of the Girl Scout Promise. Once the plan is complete and put into action, then the girl has to fill out paperwork, give it to her leader, and then celebrate her accomplishment! Please note that every Council is different. What may be approved in one Council may not be in another. Each finished project has had the paperwork signed and completed, and what you are reading are the results of those efforts.
