The Catholic pilgrimage church and the related cloisters arose in the small and primarily Protestant hamlet of Neviges. In Gottfried Böhm’s oeuvre there are many sculptural and cleft-looking concrete churches. Neviges is the largest, and is the second biggest religious building in the Cologne Bishopric after the cathedral. In the competition, the design was selected at the personal intervention of the bishop. What swung the scales was the concrete topography leading to the church and (ostensibly) the fact that the model allowed the almost blind bishop to trace the outline of the roof with his fingers.

bensberg town hall, bensberg, germany 1962-1967. architect: gottfried böhm, b.1920. layers. I could go on showing you new angles of bensberg town hall. böhm's eventful and dramatic building, succesfully tempered by its monolithic concrete structure and the discipline of its continuous window bands, is very photogenic. but this shot is a good place to end because it shows what I believe to be one of böhm's significant contributions to modern architecture and the problem of how to relate to historical context and to fragments of historical fabric. böhm's approach, developed over a number of projects in postwar germany, stands equally apart from early modernism's love of the tabula rasa and the insular conservation of unique monuments in le corbusier's town plans as from the neurotic layering of carlo scarpa's contemporary projects, whose infinite separation of elements and ages we have to come to regard as ideal, although as a methodology it has a tendency to become overly pedagogical in the hands of lesser architects. böhm weaves old and modern together freely and, more to the point, he builds right on top of historical walls, the apparent suggestion being that continuity is possible - or even simply a fact. as a statement, that was as radical as it got following the self-destruction of german culture which culminated in world war II. in bensberg, this is particularly dramatic in the council chamber, the great glass wall of which is countered by a medieval back wall, democracy taking place between the two. today, we may view böhm's approach more as a general methodology than a statement and as such it has again become relevant since peter zumthor published his plans for the recently completed kolumba museum in köln where he not only built right on top of different historical ruins but included into these the very first church by gottfried böhm himself. this photo was uploaded with a CC license and may be used free of charge and in any way you see fit. if possible, please name photographer "SEIER+SEIER". if not, don't. the gottfried böhm set so far. the böhm group, featuring the architecture of all three generations of böhm architects.

It is also considered a key example of 1960s sculptural architecture and an epochal contribution to twentieth-century church construction in the Catholic tradition. As a building, the church was a worldwide sensation, but what is less well known is that it was conceived of as the crowning work of an entire pilgrimage district. In planning terms, Böhm’s work was an intervention in the town’s urban fabric, creating a complex configured along an ascending cascade of squares that included a kindergarten, a pilgrims’ house offering overnight accommodation and common spaces, and finally the sacred building itself. Unlike earlier studies, which focused purely on the church, this is the first detailed analysis of the entire area. This publication, which is intended for a varied readership, constitutes an important, new basis for understanding Böhm’s work. Steffen Kunkel is an architect, photographer, and designer.
