Not only does Google earth act like a digital globe, students can use Google Maps and Google earth to enter 360° photo spheres to experience locations in all directions. This is awesome to use with any location in social studies (i.e. Colosseum, Pyramids of Giza, Tigris and Euphrates, etc.) but also is wonderful to add another layer to novel studies. You can have your students deep dive into the setting f a book by "traveling" there and experiencing what the characters might have seen! This fun, interactive activity uses a clever website (https://river-runner-global.samlearner.com/) that will trace a water droplet's path from anywhere on Earth to the ocean that it ultimately ends up in. Utilizes Google Earth style mapping of the entire Earth. Students can zoom in and find their homes (which they love to do) click on it, and then dramatically see the streams, creeks, rivers and oceans the drop will travel through. In the accompanying worksheet, students must then list the bodies of water the droplet travels through, the distances, and trace the route on the maps provided (all are displayed on the website). My document is designed for students in North Carolina, U.S.A. But the word document can easily be adapted by swapping out the silhouette of NC with your state or country. Short but engaging online activity that gets students thinking about watersheds, their nearby waterways, and the water cycle.
The planning, analysis, and decision-making processes can all be aided by the usage of Google Earth Pro, which is an interactive 3D globe.
