Student goal setting is such a great way to encourage your students and for students to take ownership of their learning. While student goal setting in a kindergarten or first grade classroom can be a little more difficult, your students will get so excited and involved in their learning if done. I have created these free and simple goal setting sheets that are simple and student friendly for an elementary classroom. Students can write their own reading and math goals on these simple sheets. I have included a "by" section so they can begin learning that it takes practice to reach these goals. This can help students to pick a grade level or attainable goal for themselves and then a means to achieve their goal. (These are all free at the end of the post) I have also included a version without the "by" that is one page for reading and math. In your classroom, you can have students pick goals by having discussions of what they will be learning in kindergarten. Maybe a students goal is to count to 100, learn all of their letter sounds or learn 60 sight words. I like to use my simple kindergarten goal sheet to help students write these goals. These are goal setting sheets that we use in my classroom all year so goals are communicate with both students and parents. They are student friendly and the images help students see what is expected of them in kindergarten. If you would like a graphic version of all standards with all pictures to use with students or parents, I also have those available. These forms and handout are a great resource for parents teacher conferences. You can talk with students and parents where students are at and next steps. These student I can statements are available for grade K-4 in my TPT store or by clicking on the pictures below. And be sure to grab the goal setting freebie here!

The new year is here! It's the perfect time to help your kids set goals. I know we've all set New Year's Resolutions and they've probably lasted just a few days. That's probably because the resolution wasn't S.M.A.R.T. In order for goal setting to be effective you need to show your kids how to write S.M.A.R.T. goals. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Realistic and Timely. As you have a discussion about S.M.A.R.T. goals, go over these questions. Specific: What exactly do you want to accomplish? Measurable: How will you know when you’ve reached this goal? Action: What will you need to do in order to reach your goal? Realistic: Is this goal reachable? Can I really do this? Timely: When will you reach this goal? What is your deadline? You can download these pages to help your students set up their S.M.A.R.T. goals for the new year. Do you set New Year's goals or resolutions with your students? We'd love to see your ideas. If you have a freebie or a blog post about setting goals with students please link up your ideas below. Goal Setting for Kids: Fun GOAL-SETTING ACTIVITIES: goal ladder, goal tracker, goal planner / Research-bases strategies for effective goals
Spring is here which means the energy level goes up and the focus level can go down if we aren't careful. The easiest students to teach are those that want to learn. One of the ways to foster the desire to learn is to have students set goals for themselves and plan out steps for reaching that goal. My current 5th grade intervention group is working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Well, that is what the intervention referral was for. What became clear to me right away was that some students needed so much more. Students come to me for intervention while their class is at Fitness, Art or the Computer Lab ("Specials"). Teacher typically refer kids to me for 1 to 3 weeks. While my Kinders and first graders love coming and getting special attention, the upper grade kids are motivated to prove they know something and go back to Specials. This motivation leads to kids begging me to take tests. I stand firm. You can't take the test until you have met your goals. This week, even though our goal is to add and subtract mixed numbers, some students had the goal of simplifying correctly while others had the goal of changing fractions to a common denominator. I love having students enthusiastically prove they know something. Today, I have a freebie to share with you that can help you help your students set and attain their goals. This freebie has a few different versions and some tips on how to help your students exceed their own expectations. Feel free to stop by my blog to read a bit more about it. from
