Details below. *This resource can be used for distance learning and e-learning.* Geometrocity is a project based learning activity where students will take their geometry skills and design their own city. This multi-tiered activity allows for immediate differentiation because of the size, and students may complete parts or the entire project based on your choosing. This project doesn’t just focus on math skills, as there are components of social studies (mapping skills), writing, problem solving and comprehension skills too. Students will be creating a city that uses 2D and 3D, practicing both plane and solid geometry. This project allows for students to practice and apply learned skills in geometry while problem solving and making decisions based on their own knowledge, creativity, and imagination. Students will utilize many types of geometric concepts such as nets to create buildings and structures, designing parts of a city with shapes, lines, angles, and incorporating multiple skills at the same time to reach their objectives. I am always looking for a way to add some art and creativity into my math class, my class this year LOVES to draw so I knew they would love an opportunity to draw and be creative in math class. We just finished a unit on angles and lines. We studied all the classifications of angles (acute, straight, right, obtuse, reflex) and worked with measures of complementary angles, supplementary angles, angles formed when parallel lines are cut by a transversal, angles around a point and more! For their end of unit project they had to create their own city map using a variety of angles. I gave the kids a checklist with everything they needed to include. They had to plan where to place the specifics I laid out in the project: the types and amount of angles formed by the roads, what buildings needed to be located on different angle intersections, all the buildings that they must include, etc.. First I had them sketch out a rough draft so they could easily move streets/buildings around to get everything to meet the exact specifications required. Once they were happy with their draft they transferred their map to a 11 x 17 piece of white paper. For their final copy they had to include color, a city name, the city population, street names, building labels, and it needed to be neat and organized. They totally got into this project! It was so fun to see them figuring out how to make the roads meet to form obtuse angles, and where to place buildings. Many of them also got very creative and based their city name and street names around a theme (space, the ocean etc..) I was very impressed with the final projects they turned in! If you haven't been over to visit her blog, it's an awesome resource and I am posting this post for the "Math Box Monday" :) This is a project I usually do in the winter right after Christmas break to ease us into school again. It's a FUN project that allows students to use their creativity while exploring new/old geometry concepts. Time Allotment: - 1 week (or more) Concepts Covered: - Intersecting, Parallel & Perpendicular Lines - Acute, Right, Obtuse & Straight Angles - Polygons - Polyhedrons Procedure: The first two days are spent working on the Geo-Map and the last two days are spent working on the Geo-Bug. Their only homework during this time is to work on these projects so that they are AWESOME on Friday. Geo-Map: Students will design a city that incorperates many 2-D geometric properties such as lines and polygons. Have students draw their whole city in pencil first and then color it. Geo-Bug: Students will design a 3-D geometry bug based on polyhedra that has been covered. Students will give the bug a name, describe its features and habitat. "Geopillar" circa 2010 Uses spheres, trapezoidal wings, rectangular prisms for legs and triangular prisms for antenna Directions for Geo-Bug and Geo-Map: $4 I hope this is a great project for your classroom! I know my students LOVE this one and it is anticipated every year from the start of school!

Engage your students in learning volume through creating their own 3D monsters! Throughout human history, people have created monsters to both instruct and entertain others. From the classic and colorful ghosts of Pac-Manto the contemporary zombies of Minecraft, the variety of monsters found in popular culture is truly remarkable. For this project, students will design and construct their own monster and calculate the volume of its parts. Have fun! This resource guides students through the process of designing and creating their own monsters to help students to develop a deep understanding of volume. After conducting research on monster design, students sketch their ideas on a practice design page. Next, students draw their monsters onto grid paper (3 different sizes are provided), construct their rectangular prisms, and make their calculations using the template provided. How Can Geometry Be Applied To Designing A Zoo? If your Geometry class feels like a zoo, then maybe you ought to join them! In this integrated geometry project, students will put their area and perimeter skills to the test! Focusing on unique shapes, regular polygons, apothems, and irregular figures, students determine which exhibits fit which animals' needs. Middle School and High School students alike will get a kick out of this project, which is designed to appeal to both. - In Animal Wrangling, students will work to create exhibit areas and perimeters for animals that meet certain requirements. - In Cage Match, students will calculate the areas of a variety of shapes, traditional, regular polygons with apothems, and irregular figures. - In Design a Zoo, students will choose species and build exhibits as they plan their zoos. - In Zoo Business and Zoo Financial Statement students manage a budget and monitor the success of their zoos. Students share and critique other zoos and may revise their design and financials. Can't you tell how much we just loooove alliteration?! This week we reviewed quadrilaterals but added in how to classify them based on sides (equal? parallel?) and angles. Now too much to share about the activity but I did have a friend "connect" quadrilateral with the quad he has always wanted to ride! and how many wheels does this quad have!? "FOUR!" and how many sides do quadrilaterals have?! "OOOOOOH! FOUR!". Love moments like this! I had them make posters to help them study/review and they taped them to the side of their desks ("Our desks are quadrilaterals too!"). Unfortunately, with this our district adopting the Common Core Standards this school year, we have felt a bit overwhelmed and well, under time. In fourth grade we currently have math daily for an hour - that's when we do our Fraction Frenzy unit (Numbers & Operations: Fractions)!!! And then each class (we have two fourth grade classes) has one extra math class a week and this is where we have our Geometry unit (4.G.1.2.3). Finally, twice a week after school we fit in the Measurment and Data standards!! Phew, luckily - I have coined myself amongst our fourth graders as a MatheMagician who looooves teaching Math!! I'm already excited for Pi Day on Thursday! I'll be sure to blog some pictures of our activities and I even created a little PiDay activity packet!!!
