This curious little object in the woods beside the new Institute of Contemporary Arts is an 'Archipod'. Installed last winter, I presume it's to be used as some sort of writing/rehearsal space. Constructed in plywood with considerable insulation (including a double-glazed porthole and roof dome), the inside is clad with plasterboard whilst the outside has these attractive Western Red Cedar shingles. Access is via gull-wing door. The manufacturers' website alludes to a seedpod, and in this setting, that's apt. The website also refers to the pod as a 'luxury garden office', and if 'luxury' rings alarm bells, that's apt too: this pod, 2.5 m tall with a diameter of 2.9 m, 'typically' costs £15,000 and a larger one (same height, but a metre wider) installed nearer the main building costs £19,000. Plus installation. Or to rephrase, they cost about as much as two members of admin staff for a year, which, though I do like its appearence, makes the pod seem more than a little frivolous.

A descriptive account of the Towns and Villages, Noblemen’s and Gentlemen’s Seats, Mountains, Lakes, Waterfalls, and other objects worthy of notice; for the information and guidance of Tourists. Made from actual Survey, and corrected to 1830. JONATHAN OTLEY’S MAP OF THE LAKE DISTRICT IN 1827 GLOSSARY Reviews: A Genteel family's tour of Lancaster & the Lake District in 1827 Lancaster Guardian - 20 May 1998 - Just the same but with out the motorists...... Next time motorists complain about the A591, they should remember what travellers in 1827 had to put up with. "From Kendal to Bowness, a distance of nine miles, the road is excessively uneven, and, for the greater part of the way, passes over a barren, rugged and desolate tract." The journey then took an hour-and-a-half and - although there were few traffic jams - it was hardly the best start to a holiday. This book is a collection of letters - published in the Lancaster Gazette - written by A.Rambler about a family holiday in the Lake District of the 1820s. It soon becomes clear that 19th century tourists occupied themselves in much the same way as their 20th century descendants. The family in the book climb Helvellyn, go rowing on Lake Windermere and wander around Ambleside, which A. Rambler describes as "ancient and irregularly built." Particularly interesting is a trip made to Belle Isle, the mansion situated on a Windermere island. There is also a description of Lancaster and an account of a famous murder trial that took place in the town's castle. The book features Victorian maps showing the route of the tour and a glossary. I found it very interesting, the first hand accounts give a good flavour of what it was like to be a tourist in the Lake District in 1827.
