This beautiful flower will certainly be one of the pearls of your summer garden. Polianthes 'The Pearl' (creamy white double tuberose) has an exquisite spike carrying multiple creamy double flowers which extends high above its rather grassy-looking foliage. To add to the beauty of these blooms, they are also fragrant, and make long-lasting cut flowers. This makes these delicate blooms which will adorn your garden in mid to late summer. As an added bonus, 'The Pearl' will also give a good show on your patio if planted in an attractive pot. They’re easy to grow but do like their place in the sun! Every August this perennial puts on a magnificent display of gentle beauty. We have so many enquiries about this lovely flower from our visitors that we keep many slips of paper as handouts printed with the plant name! Preferred common name: Chinese meadow rue 'Hewitt's Double' 'Hewitt's Double' is a tall erect herbaceous fully hardy perennial with attractively divided green fern like leaves and tall panicles of long-lasting, rosette-like, double lilac-purple flowers. Before they fully open the flowers look like small pompoms. The light airy sprays of flowers look, from a distance, like a purple mist hovering among other plants. They contrast well with heavier flowers. The plants grow well in light shade or full sun. We grow our 'Hewitt's Double' in partial shade in an area sheltered by other plants to minimise wind-damage. Often some discreet support is necessary up to about half the height of the flowering plant in summer. They are said to grow up to 1.5m in height however, after a wet spring this year, the 'Hewitt's Double' in this photo eventually reached 2.5m in height! They can be divided every two to three years as soon as growth begins in spring.
