Denn eine Dame aus unserer Gruppe versorgt seit Jahren das Krankenhaus Dritter Orden in München mit Frühchenquilts, die von vielen Leuten genäht und gespendet werden. Diese Quilts werden auf der Kinderintensiv-Station an die Eltern von Frühgeborenen verschenkt - zum Zudecken, Einwickeln, um Liebe und Freude zu schenken. Jedes Jahr machen die Mitglieder unserer Gruppe dafür ein "Gemeinschaftswerk". Das kann z.B. sein, dass eine Farbe und eine Größe vorgegeben werden und jede dazu ein kleines Werk schafft. Oder es wird ein bestimmter Stoff an alle verteilt und der muss dann bei einer vorgegebenen Größe zu einem Miniquilt verarbeitet werden. Für mich bedeutet das eigentlich fast immer, dass ich Zeit und Kreativität in etwas stecke, das ich nachher nicht brauche. Und ich wüsste auch nicht, wem ich so etwas schenken könnte. So manches Teil habe ich deshalb auch schon nach der Ausstellung "entsorgt". Und weil es nicht nur mir so geht, haben sich die Mitglieder unserer Patchworkgruppe diesmal dazu entschlossen, als Gemeinschaftswerk "Frühchenquilts" zu nähen. Die Größe wurde auf 60 x 60 cm vorgegeben. When the annual exhibition of our patchwork group came closer, we had to decide what kind of "community" work we want to sew this year. Usually you get a theme or a special fabric or just one or two colors and have to sew a miniquilt in a given size. It's always interesting to see what people create. But it's also almost always something I don't need or don't want and after I put a lot of creativity, time and work into the making I sometimes throw it away after the exhibition... Not satisfying... But it became clear that I wasn't the only one in the group who had such "problems" and thus we dedided to sew premie quilts this year and to donate them. The size was set to 60 x 60 cm. Mein Entschluss stand relativ schnell fest, dass ich einen Jungen- und einen Mädchenquilt nähen wollte. Auf Instagram habe ich bei der Selbermacherin einen ganz süßen Jungsquilt gesehen, den wollte ich unbedingt machen. Also habe ich mir Sterne aufgezeichnet, blaue Stoffe rausgesucht und los ging's: I immediately decided to sew a quilt for a little boy and another one for a little girl. On Instagram I found a lovely boy's quilt at the feed of "Selbermacherin" and decided to make something similar. So I picked some blue fabrics and began sewing stars: Für den Mädelsquilt wollte ich den Tic Tac Toe Block ausprobieren und habe mich für helle, freundliche Gelb- und Orangetöne entschieden: For the girlish quilt I wanted to sew four Tic Tac Toe blocks and chose light and friendly colors: Doch mit dem Endergebnis bin ich gar nicht zufrieden. Ich dachte nämlich, ich müsse besonders bauschiges Vlies für so einen Frühchenquilt nehmen... Mir gefällt das aufgebauschte aber gar nicht so - vor allem sieht das bei mir nach dem Quilten immer ein bisschen schepps aus... einfach nicht so gleichmässig und schön... But I wasn't happy at all with the result of the girl's quilt... I thought I must use some thick batting although I don't like to work with it. It never makes a quilt look accurate and even in the end... at least not my quilts... Eine Freundin, die sehr viele Frühchenquilts näht, hat mir dann erklärt, dass Frühchenquilts eher ein dünnes Vlies bräuchten - weil die Babies nicht darauf liegen, sondern darin eingewickelt bzw. damit zugedeckt würden. Zum Glück war der blaue Sternenquilt zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht gequiltet! Der hat dann ein dünnes Vlies bekommen und eine weiche Flanellrückseite :-) A friend of mine, who has sewn a lot of premie quilts, then told me, that I have to use a very thin batting, because the quilts usually aren't used for lying on it but for being wrapped into it or covered with it. Luckily she told me this before I started quilting the blue boy quilt :-) So I used a thin batting and a soft flannel for the back: Den Mädchenquilt wollte ich so unmöglich zur Ausstellung geben - obwohl mir das Muster nach wie vor gefällt. Aber es musste eine neue Idee her. Und wieder hatte ich Glück. Wir haben nämlich zu dem Zeitpunkt gerade unser Schlafzimmer gestrichen und umgeräumt und ich musste all meine Schränke und Schubläden ausräumen. Dabei fielen mir ein Haufen genähter Blöcke und unvollständiger Projekte in die Hände. Vieles habe ich der besagten Freundin gegeben, die daraus gleich Quilts für's Altenheim und für Frühchen genäht hat. Und ein, zwei Sachen habe ich behalten und selbst noch weitere Frühchenquilts genäht :-) I didn't like my girl's quilt at all and didn't want to give it to the exhibiton. So I had to think about an alternative... We renovated and painted our sleeping room at that time and I had to clean all my drawers and shelves. That's when I found a lot of orphan blocks and other unfinished items. I gave most of them to my premie quilt experienced friend and she immediately used them for more quilts to donate to senior homes and NICUs. I just kept some blocks and made two more premie quilts myself. Zum Beispiel hatte ich noch "Broken Dishes" Blöcke von einer Decke übrig, die ich vor einigen Jahren mal für meine Tochter gemacht habe. Die Blöcke habe ich kurzerhand kleiner geschnitten und daraus einen weiteren Mädelsquilt gemacht: For example I found some leftover blocks from a Broken Dishes quilt I finished a couple of years ago for one of my daughters. I cut them down to a fitting size and made this quilt for a little girl: Und aus einem Top, dass ich mal für Jess (The Elven Garden Blog) als Pattern-Testerin genäht habe und das auch als Ufo in meinem Schrank schlummerte, habe ich noch einen weiteren Jungenquilt genäht. Dafür musste eigentlich nur noch ein kleiner Rand rundum genäht werden: And I found a top I once made when pattern testing for Jess (The Elven Garden Blog) - I added a small border and finished another boy's quilt: Der gefällt mir besonders gut :-) I really love this one :-) Auf alle Fälle stand es jetzt zwei zu eins für die Jungsquilts. Also musste noch ein weiterer Mädelsquilt her. Bei Johanna Weidner habe ich auf Instagram eine Kissenhülle gesehen, die mir gut gefallen hat und die ich kurzerhand vergrößert habe um auf das geforderte Maß von 60 x 60 cm zu kommen: Well - but now I had two quilts for a boy and just one for a girl... On Instagram I found the picture of a lovely cushion cover made by Johanna Weidner and decided to use this design for a girl's quilt: Vier Quilts und ein weiterer, der es nicht auf die Ausstellung geschafft hat. Das ist doch mal eine Ausbeute :-) Ich hoffe, dass die Quilts Freude bereiten und über die Sorgen und Ängste der Frühcheneltern hinweghelfen... So in the end I was really happy with four instead of two quilts for donation. I hope, that my quilts will bring love and happiness into somebodies home... For the title of this post, I intentionally used a made-up anagram from the word "scraps." That's because a blogger I follow (She will remain nameless so as not to embarrass her - Hi Char! 👋) used the word "scarp" in a recent post title. I got such a kick out of the word - thinking when I saw it that surely I was going to learn something new, related to qiultmaking - that I'm using it intentionally, As you can see, all I've been doing lately is Scarping My Scraps. It's been a tedious, messy task. I've been handling leftover bits from projects made ten to twelve years ago. Certainly, I've made a number of scrap quilts during that time, but it's clear I've never dug to the bottom of each canvas bin. I am now. Even hubs noticed, asking, "What are you doing now?" And later, after pressing, sorting and cutting for several hours, "Aren't you getting tired of doing that?" But I have a goal. I'm simultaneously working on three projects! The first continues to be Harvest Moon. To make these, you create fabric from your scraps and then use templates to cut two shapes. Free tutorial by Megan here. Then, thanks to a blog comment from my friend Anne @springleafstudio, who pointed me toward the Unallocated scrap quilt on Instagram - see @mckillopmichelle here - I'm cutting pieces for my own Unallocated. These are my test blocks that measure 4" X 4" unfinished. Believe it or not, I am feeling productive, though I don't have anything to show for it except sorted piles. Oh, and an ever-increasingly full basket of 1½" X 1½" squares! I need to change my rotary blade today. Another bonus has been to find the bits of brown and black prints that have been lurking, unused, in my scraps. These are colors I don't use in my quilts, so I'll be taking them to Big Cypress to give away. I've also begun cutting some of my larger scraps to make a Posh Penelope quilt, a pattern by Sew Kind of Wonderful that uses the Quick Curve Ruler. After seeing two of these quilts made scrappy - the first at our QGOTV quilt show, and another on Instagram - I knew it would be another good way to use scraps. Remember that secret sewing project I've been promising? Well, I'm happy that I finally get to reveal it to you, because it's my turn on the Oh Sew Baby! Tutorial Series at Fort Worth Fabric Studio! I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to write up a tutorial for my Strip Tango pattern. Since making Bohemian Charm, this has been one of my go-to patterns when I need a quick quilt that is perfect for showing off pretty fabrics. In fact, I just posted another quilt I've been working on with this pattern in a twin size! This quilt only requires nine fat quarters to put together, although I used extra fabrics because I prefer a little more variety. Since I used more than nine fabrics, I had some leftover strips, which I pieced into the backing. Springtime in Texas means that roadsides, hills, and fields are covered with bluebonnets- the state flower of Texas. The beautiful blues and greens of this quilt remind me a lot of that gorgeous sight. Although my family moved from Texas almost 8 years ago, we really loved the 7 years we lived in Texas, and this is certainly one of the things I miss. In this photo they look purple, but they are really the most brilliant blue, and are quite a sight to behold. Finished this I Spy quilt last night. I just did a simple stitch in the ditch with a fun squiggle down the sashing. I have 2 bolt...

Oh man 8 more inches projected today. Well I've got the day off, 3 different kind of soups in the freezer and the sewing machine is ready to go. I was think of Spring and made a couple of rainbow baby quilts. I'll post the patterns by next week. I was using some of the material that I got at the estate sale of a quilter, oh what fun that was. She loved the bright colors and I'm still using them! The first one I'm calling Over the Rainbow, wish I would have had one more color, but eh I still like it even though that purple is hanging out there. When I do the pattern, it won't be hanging :) Over the Rainbow over the rainbow detailed quilting Over the rainbow black This one is still in progress, I'm calling it Slices of color. This came from my stash and a Joanne's Jelly Roll that I couldn't resist. But I will next time, that was the absolutely worst cut jelly roll I have EVER had. Not one of them was cut straight and they ranged any where from 2.75 to 2 in width. Very disappointing. But hey a little trimming here and there and I've got splashes of color everywhere!! Just need to get two more borders on this one and I'm done. UPDATE - Slices of color done! Update 2 - I've added the pattern (pdf only) to the tutorial and eq7 tab Slices of color Ok bring on the snow, where's my sewing machine?
