The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam holds a remarkable sampler (acc. no. BK-NM-9987). It dates to the early eighteenth century and was made in the small town of Hindeloopen in Friesland, in the north of The Netherlands. The ground material is made of linen, while the embroidery is made with silk, using Algerian eyelet, back stitch, cross stitch, double running stitch, hem stitch and staying stitch.

New Needle Lace Books 32.50 by Yvette Stanton Frisian Whitework Dutch Embroidery from Friesland w/ pattern sheets and stitches Frisian whitework is a style of counted embroidery from Friesland, a coastal province in the north of the Netherlands. Frisian whitework usually used white linen thread on fine white even weave linen fabric. It was used to decorate bed sheets, pillowcases, shirts, caps, bibs and handkerchiefs. The style was also extensively recorded on samplers by young girls learning to stitch. Some of the samplers feature colored silk thread in addition to the white linen thread, and some are predominantly worked in colored silk thread. Despite that, this is a whitework style. There are clear step by step instructions so you can master all of the stitches required, and ten gorgeous projects ranging from the very small, just perfect to start out, through to large projects that you can really get your teeth into. The book also has three pattern sheets and a detailed index. It’s time to take your counted embroidery to new heights with Frisian whitework. ** Please note if you add additional items from another listing the added shipping charge is only for the additional item added usually $.50 per item**
Designer: Modern Folk Embroidery I’m excited to bring you this fully illustrated guide on how to stitch an open hem. The open hem is found on traditional sewing all over the world, but has been particularly popular on Dutch – and especially Frisian samplers. It’s a very handy and versatile technique to finish embroidery pieces. The open hem taught in this booklet is the one seen on samplers from the 16th-century onwards. It uses square corners and not mitred corners (as mitred corners are never seen in traditional embroidery pieces). Note that the open hem is a pulled thread embroidery technique and therefor only suitable for linen / evenweave materials. It cannot be worked on Aida fabric.

East Frisian Tea FULL OF HARMONY AND STRONG Gluten free, lactose free, vegan Recommended brewing times for Black tea: 2-4 minutes (100°C hot water) TEEKANNE Ostfriesen tea consists 100% Assam tea. The tea leaves are picked by hand in the traditional tea gardens of the Indian region of Assam. The selection of the best teas in this region gives the TEEKANNE Ostfriesen tea its unmistakable harmonious and powerful taste. A taste that not only the East Frisians love. Tarefully selected Assam tea leaves are dried, fermented packed based on traditional East Frisian methods. For centuries, black tea is a hot beverage of choice in this windy, cool region of East Frisia, along the North Sea coast of Germany. Mixed and packed in Germany by Teekanne, one of the world's largest purveyor of tea and Germany's leading tea brand. Based in Düsseldorf (North Rhine Westphalia), the family-owned company (founded in 1882) invented the flow-through tea bag, a technology used in virtually every hot tea product today. Assam : Northeast India, with around 36,000 km² the largest contiguous growing area in the world. Production there primarily uses the CTC production method. Teas from the "Second Flushes" production have a strong to very strong cup, a full-bodied, malty character and are well suited for preparation with milk or cream. When it comes to tea drinking, there’s one region in Germany in particular – East Frisia – where it has become a ceremonious act. The East Friesians are the biggest tea drinkers in the world, even more than the British. In 2016, the East Frisian Tea Ceremony is granted UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Cultural Heritage status. East Frisian tea blend : Blend of strong Assam varieties with beautiful gold tips. Because of the outstanding importance that tea enjoys in East Frisia, an East Frisian tea culture developed over time. The Teetied (tea time) is considered an important part of East Frisian sociability. With around 300 liters of tea, the East Frisians have the largest tea consumption per capita in the world. Traditionally, an East Frisian blend consists of up to 80% Assam teas.

Frisian white and cutwork samplers Visiting her in March, now it is her turn to visit me in Waddinxveen, and more in general, the Netherlands. At her place, we were studying Lefkara, white and cutwork from Cyprus. We had been enticing her to visit us, mentioning our local whitework and cutwork, for starters the Marken and Friesland style of whitework. Her visit here is pending.. But after embroidering a first Frisian style whitework sampler a few years ago, I stranded with my second one, in which I very enthusiastically had designed a large J (J did not exist in Frisian alphabets), a K a beautiful heart and an edge in cutwork, I did not know quite what else to embroider on it. It was still quite bare.. I want to be able to show Yolande some personal Frisian work.. and since I already had made whitework Frisian sheets for the cradle of my two grandsons, I thought I might turn this one into a birth sampler of some sort.. After all, the first alphabet cloth also bore the name and birthdate of the elder grandson.. And presto, there was a plan of sorts to finish the sampler. Now it was done quite fast - in solar we can talk of fast, hand embroidering! The technique is fresh in my mind (or in my fingers, as we say in Dutch)
