Here are some of the cards from my air/water activities (also in English). These are cards you can use in a Science centre. Your students can sort them into "air" and "water" categories, or you can use them in your word wall. We sorted these into a pocket chart together: Here are some of the word wall words... I chose a few to start out with in our Science word wall. Here are some of the worksheets... Last week we went on a water hunt around our school. These are some of the water sources we found in the neighbourhood! I've made them into flashcards, and there is a worksheet to take with you on your water hunt! These cards are for learning/practicing the water cycle. Each of the 4 steps have 2 images that go with them. Your students can put the steps in order and match them to the description: These images are to start conversation - What do your students see in the pictures? How do they relate to air and water? These are for sorting into different food chains. What happens to a food chain when something is taken out of it because of pollution? What happens to the animal at the top of the food chain?

This week in grade 1: Our focus has been on learning the colours! I found this song on youtube, but changed the lyrics and added more colours (we keep the general tune though). My kids love it! Here's the version we sing: Bleu, jaune, rouge et vert, rouge et vert! My grade 1s started playing colour "bug in a rug". One student hides the bug under one of the cards, and the others try to guess where it is (saying the word in French). And a different version of the same game: Here is the "bang!" game that they started playing this week. They pull a card from the container, and if they can say it in French then they can keep the card. If they pull a "bang!" card then they get a second turn. When my grade 2s play "bang", we sometimes play that they put all their cards back in. Then we started to work our way through our colour books! Here are two examples below: With my grade 2s, we continued to review the colours and basic vocabulary from grade 1. They played colour dominoes, and had to match the colour square to the name of the colour: I also asked them different questions in French, and they drew and discussed their answers with me. I let them draw on their desks (they were STUNNED) and then we washed them after with a bit of soap and water. We practiced a longer version of the "septembre" poem that they learned in grade 1: And we reviewed different sentence starters: My grade 2s have also been playing colour "bang", but they have to use the word in a sentence. I am trying to break them of the habit of starting their sentences with "je vois", so we will slowly be adding in different options for sentence starters on our bulletin board. It was a busy week! Hope you're all settling in and enjoying getting to know your classes :)
Getting ready to teach the more complex sounds in French? Do your students already have a good phonetic base of the vowels and consonants? This was the position I found myself in as I started Grade 2 French Immersion last September. I needed a way to increase my student’s knowledge of the more complex French […]

This week my students created mini books from my "mon ecole" pack. I had previously read the teacher version to them many times, so even if they weren't "reading" the "je vois" sentence starter and vocabulary, most knew it by heart already. I also recorded myself reading it last week and put it up on my class website so they could practice at home. The file includes a few different options for how your students can complete the mini books. I used the version where they read the word, trace the word, and draw a picture to match. Then I conferenced with each student and had them "read" the book to me. I used a rubric that I created to be similar to a GB+ assessment - so that I could quickly make notes about how they read the book. I had some students who could easily read the whole book, some who needed prompts (e.g. look at the first letter, or look at their drawing) and some who could not identify the vocabulary on each page. Here's a sample (with my name!): I will NOT be sending this rubric home. It's only the third week of school and it was more for me so that I could get an idea of where all my students were. If you've bought my "Mon ecole" file on TPT, you can go back to download the updated version now with this rubric!

We have been working all year on getting away from the "Je vois..." sentences that my kids know and love. Today we played a "game" to ensure they started their sentences differently. I had one pile of my word wall sentence starters (here) and one of our spring word wall words (here). I picked the vocabulary words they already know from grade 1. I chose one student to pick a sentence starter (without looking), and one to pick our vocabulary word. They we *dramatically* flipped them over at the same time and put them into a pocket chart. In groups of 2-3, they then came up with sentences (orally) that started with the sentence prompt and contained the vocabulary word. My students got really into it! I also loved the results, because they automatically had to step up their game with their sentence structures. This was drastically different to the "Je vois (#) (colour) (object)" sentences that they are used to creating. Here are some of the really cool sentences they came up with: Pourquoi est-ce que les oiseaux sont nés dans les œufs? Quand je vois l'herbe vert, c'est le printemps. Dans mon sac a dos, il y a une abeille. L'abeille m'a piqué. Est-ce que tu as un bain d'oiseau à ta maison? SO fun! Although they didn't understand what I was so excited about, they seemed to have also had fun :)

Next week we will be starting some sight word practice. As the focus is still very much on oral communication, we will only be focusing on 4 words per week. This will NOT be the main focus of our week - we will still be focusing on acquiring new vocabulary. I've made up the first set of sight word practice on tpt with some fun activities to do throughout the week. We will NOT be doing all of the pages each week, but they've all been included in case you want some extra activities. We decided to also photocopy one activity onto the back of each week's poem so that our students can practice them at home as well. You could also laminate them to put in your centres. Here is what is included in the file: Set #1/Turquoise For each set of 4 words: -->Spin worksheet (hold paperclip in place with pencil, spin the paperclip) - colour the word it lands on -->Read and colour the words (following the legend) -->Spin (paperclip) and graph the sight words -->Trace, cut and glue, and write the words -->Magnifying glass hunt - write the words you find -->Summary word search and template (so students can make their own to practice) Summary "Bang" game to practice and review Summary "Bug in a rug" game to practice and review 22 set bingo cards to practice and review: (I printed mine in black and white to save ink, and used a turquoise sticker to mark them) Set of word wall strips to use for word work: (I printed mine on turquoise card stock) 7 page mini book - to practice and check off when each word can be read: Assessment tracker - to send home once you've finished the 28 sight words: Vocabulary list: le la un une a est et les je tu j'ai c'est ma mon maman papa dans ami amie qui ou mes moi voici va de As always, if you've bought this pack and there is a way that I can make it more useful for you in your classroom, send me an email! I would be happy to try to improve it for you :)

For younger kids, here are some French classroom name writing practice activities you and your students will love! They'll have fun writing their names.
We started introducing this new vocabulary to our classes this past Monday - since it's (somehow!) already fall!! This year I am trying to include lots of verbs with the vocabulary, so that they pick up more than just the nouns. I made this pack - it includes: - Word wall words (i have them in my writing centre) - Fall word search activity - Fall word scramble - Fall journal writing prompt - "En automne, j'aime" (I am going to use it as a class book) - Class book page - Loto/Bingo - 7 boards, and playing cards - Bang! cards My class is loving the "loto" and "bang" games. I am playing loto in small groups with them while the rest of the class is doing their "5 au quotidien" activities. To make both games harder, I have the students use the words in a full sentence. Also - A Spanish version!

Today my grade 2s started the "a" centre games! My grade 1s will do the same centres in the spring, but for now they are still working on vocabulary acquisition. I got some soap boxes from Dollarama to store all the alphabet tiles in: They used the tiles to build words with the "a" sound. I glued the strips onto file folders before laminating the file folders to keep them together (I'm trying to get away from ziploc bags for all my centres). Another centre is matching: While my grade 2s were working on these, my grade 1s were practicing their fall "belles phrases". Here are some of the sentences they created: This week I am teaching them "et" and "avec" so that they can extend their "belles phrases" to include more of the vocabulary that they know. Hope your week is going well!
Today we added a new activity to Daily 5/Work on writing - Sticker stories! We tried it as a class first, picking stickers that worked together in a picture. Then as a class we wrote the story to go with it! Here is Spider-Man, trying to escape from a shark! There is also a police car on the ground that is trying to help him. My class thought this was hilarious and were really excited to try it on their own. Together we decided that the maximum for each picture would be 5 stickers, and that the goal would be 3+ sentences for each picture. Their stories are not done - I'll post them next week!
