Chocolate d'Aiguebelle "Birds" (series of 50 large cards c1910)

This adorable French trade card features an assortment of French objects. The card has advertising on the back for a famous French company selling chocolate. It is in excellent age related condition, *see photo. From Google "Victorian trade cards are an early form of collectible advertising. Popularized after the Civil War by businesses, they offer a colorful and diverse look at popular culture and society in the late 1800s. Trade cards originated in England in the 1700s with tradesmen advertising their wares." The internet is a wonderful thing for getting you to go off on completely weird tangents and lose hours of time! Yesterday I was reading the Osprey MAA on Louis XIV's Army, which I picked up to improve my knowledge on the period 1660 to 1700 with a view to picking up some Dixon Miniatures for Donnybrook. I was only a couple of pages into the book when I read that the French army was sent to Madagascar in 1666. Ooh, interesting I thought and went off to Google about it. I found diddly squat but did get rather distracted by the late C19th French Wars in Madagascar (thinking dual use with the Dahomey French) and then I discovered some images of these lovely period trading cards from bars of chocolate... The images I found initially where quite small so of course this necessitated me trying to find larger ones on Google.fr with some limited success. I'm not sure how many are in the set, one page seemed to indicate at least 20, and it is a shame that they are so rare as I really like them. I also found some other illustrations in magazine periodicals from the period and am planning to hunt down more. The Hova (Madagascan) army is really interesting looking and it will be interesting to see what figures can be used for them if I decide to expand the Dahomey project... More on the Donnybrook plans another day! :-)

I was so excited to receive a box of antique French Chocolate and other trade cards from France in an original antique box in which the chocolates were packed and sold. This is a close up in very high resolution of the logo. I will also be putting up the cover of the box so you can see it set in the original design. I sure you could think of so many uses for this image. I'm planning on printing it onto a transparent sticker to put on an old glass jar. I must remember to reverse the image. It comes with the background as shown in the photo. You can use this image in your own scrapbooking, jewelry, art work, gift cards, altered art work, miniatures, collages or print onto iron on transfers to make fabrics for pillows, quilted items and bags. I was so excited to receive a box of antique French Chocolate and other trade cards from France in an original antique box in which the chocolates were packed and sold. I would love to put it on an iron on transfer on linen fabric for the pocket of a purse or bag or as a pillow, it is a high resolution so could be made much larger. This image is sort of dark in parts and really shows its age, rather shabby chic but I love it and hope you will too.
