Taliesin West is Frank Lloyd Wright's Wright’s beloved winter home and desert laboratory in Scottsdale, AZ.
The original conception of the Taliesin 2 Floor Lamp was in 1933, when Frank Lloyd Wright converted the existing gymnasium of his Hillside Home School, located in Spring Green, Wisconsin, into a theater. He designed lighting pendants composed of rectangular light boxes and plywood shields to be suspended from the tall ceiling. These fixtures proved to be a lighting innovation, providing comfortable indirect light without the use of glass or shades. In 1952, when the theater was rebuilt following a fire, Wright modified the design of the original fixtures for use in the dining room, attaching them to the oak beam overhead. He found their soft indirect light so pleasing that he had a standing floor lamp of the same design fabricated for use in Taliesin, his Wisconsin home. The Taliesin 2 Floor Lamp arrives fully assembled. Simply remove the lamp from the packaging and plug it in. The lamp has (10) 15 Watt incandescent bulbs pre-installed as well as an on/off foot switch for easy power management. Weight: 28 lbs. Height: 80”. Base: 16" X 16”. With special permission by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Japanese lighting brand Yamagiwa presents the cherry Taliesin 1 Lamp. The design is inspired by Wright’s Taliesin 1 Pendant Light, an original design that was created to illuminate a theatre at the architect's 1911 residence in Taliesin, Wisconsin. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture are now both situated at this very same location. Crafted from cherry wood or walnut, the material was chosen after Wright’s favourite colour, red. The sculptural lamp consists of a series of boxes which contain the light sources, each reflecting off the boards placed above and below them. The principle of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Organic Architecture was to design buildings where all the parts were integral of the structure and to the building’s very nature. Embracing old craft and new technology Yamagiwa is pleased to present this collection of lighting fixtures in the spirit of that pursuit. Material: Cherry wood Size: H 50.8 cm, W 35.6 cm, Depth 40.6 cm, Weight 1.9 kg. Bulb: 1 x 60W Max (not included).
