Painting and illustrating are skills the Dutch are well known for, but it's the Dutch illustrator Anton Pieck who never got the recognition he deserved.
The farmhouse of Van Schaik (Tweede Doodweg 24/26/28) in Vogelenzang. ---- (Wordpress.com) De befaamde tekenaar en illustrator Anton Pieck (geboren in 1895 in Den Helder en tweelingbroer van tekenaar Henri Pieck) woonde het grootste deel van zijn leven, sinds 1939 aan de Prins Mauritslaan, te Overveen. Hij overleed aldaar op 24 november 1987, 92 jaar oud. Weing bekend is dat hij exact vier jaar tussen maart 1922 en 1926 op het adres Nicolaas Beetsplein woonachtig was. Hij verhuisde van Den Haag naar Heemstede na zijn huwelijk met Jo van Poelvoorde. Het was in zijn ‘arme’ tijd, dat hij voor talrijke boeken illustraties vervaardigde en op het pas opgerichte Kennemer Lyceum te Overveen een baan als tekenleraar had aanvaard. In Heemstede zijn de dochters Elsa (1924) en Anneke (1925) geboren. Hier beschikte de kunstenaar nog niet over een atelier, maar werkte in de woonkamer. In zijn Heemsteedse tijd maakte hij talrijke boekillustraties, tekende, etste, schilderde en vervaardigde houtsneden. Daarnaast werkte hij in het buitenland, bij voorkeur in Vlaanderen, Engeland en Ierland. Pieck had regelmatig contact met die andere boekillustrator, die in de Nicolaas Beetsstraat woonde, Jan Wiegman. Het is voorgekomen dat laatstgenoemde zoveel opdrachten van uitgevers had, dat hij om de hoek naar Pieck stapte met het verzoek illustratiewerk over te nemen. Op 3 maart 1926 verhuisde Pieck en zijn familie naar een klein rijtjeshuis in de Emmalaan, dichtbij het Kennemer Lyceum te Overveen. 13 jaar later volgde het herenhuis in de Prins Mauritslaan waar hij tot zijn overlijden heeft gewoond.
Prang's Natural History Series for Children, 1878 I recently spent a few happy hours browsing the huge archives of the International Children's DIgital Library, in particular the incredibly rich Baldwin Collection consisting of 1986 books published for children from the mid-to-late 19th century. The collection was contributed to the ICDL by the Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Materials at the University of Florida and digitized through grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The International Children's DIgital Library won the American Library Association President's 2010 Award for International Library Innovation, and was named one of 25 best websites for teaching and learning by the American Association of School Librarians. Finished at last! I've made a real marathon effort this week to complete the rabbits, write the patterns and list them in my Etsy shop. They are 15cm (6in) tall and, as you can see, extremely plump little characters. When I'm designing I like to have a theme to work with and for this one I chose winter which includes Christmas of course. I've always loved dressed rabbits and stories about little rabbit families. This was one of my early books and the cold blustery weather portrayed on the front cover is just what we are experiencing today. Here are three more of my vintage bunny books which you might have seen in one of my recent posts. And who remembers watching Rag, Tag and Bobtail? Gentle tales of woodland folk, not a bit like the stories in TV programmes made for today's children. This is one of my oldest books dating from Victorian times. These storybook rabbits look almost human don't you think? I mustn't forget the rabbit tales everyone knows featuring Peter in his little blue coat and Benjamin in his enormous tam-o-shanter (I love that hat!). Little Grey Rabbit is the last of my vintage bunny books and here is the cute little lady industriously writing her party invitations. Doesn't she look neat and well organised? I'm afraid my life isn't at all like that. At the moment I could be portrayed by this little Santa with a perplexed expression realising that Christmas is only a few short weeks away and the sack needs filling. Perhaps I should take lessons from the well organised Little Grey Rabbit and start writing my Christmas cards now. Then again, perhaps not!! I hope you have a bright, sunny weekend wherever you are.
