It feels like time is just FLYING by! We are gearing up to write report cards next week, and life feels like a blur. I can't believe tomorrow is February 1st!!!!! Our school (like most schools, I'm sure) never seems to have any laminate. I always miss it when it's refilled! I've been using my winter sentence starters unlaminated (gasp!) and finally managed to get upstairs to use the last little bit that was left on the roll! There are many ways that you can use these! I put magnets on the back, but keep them on display in a pocket chart when they're aren't in use. Here are a few ways that I use them in my classroom: - Journal prompts - Stick one on the board that your whole class can write about in their journals - Oral conversation prompts - Pull one at a time (or let a student choose one!) and have students turn and talk with an elbow partner to complete the sentence - Verb introductions - It's so neat to hear how many verbs they can use now! After using the sentence building station only as a whole group for a few weeks, I've let my baby go and it's now part of a centre! 3-4 students stand at the whiteboard and take turns adding the next bit to the sentence. I make sure that I'm there too when there are students at that centre who need a bit more support. It's been helpful to work on their sentence structure, as I have a few little monkeys who are mixing up their orders. The cards in the photograph are from my Winter Mini Book and Centres file. We are also finishing up week 4 of our second round of sight words. I've mixed up some of the activities from vol.1 to vol. 2, but I have all the same activities in the file for all 7 weeks. You can pick and choose what you use - some make great centres too, to save on paper. I've copied some of them 4 to a page, and my kids are still able to read and write on them when they're this small. They love to trade word searches with a partner and see who can find all the words first!

The last few weeks have been so busy! Report cards went home, and student-led conferences are all finished! Below are some pictures of the work my grade 2s have been doing with reading sounds. We start each sound by reading a short silly story together. Then we brainstorm the other words we know with that sound. After that they take a clipboard and go on a hunt of the classroom for more words with that sound. They like to check the books in our classroom library for sounds as well. They also use our sound word wall for more ideas. Here are some pictures of some of the centres that we have done: After they finish the folders (above) or the matching games, they take an ipad mini and record themselves reading each of the words. After reading them through once, they try to come up with sentences containing each of the words. This also gives me a video that I can use as a check-in to support them with their reading. After a week of exploration in the different centres, then my students write and illustrate their own silly story. They also practice reading and writing with the sheets below: It's been really great to see the progress that they've made so far! With the change in the Ontario French curriculum as of September, I will be doing these same centres in the spring with my grade 1s. What does your sound program look like?

In grade 1, we have been learning about classroom objects. I read this book to them: After having read it to them many times over the past few weeks, they are familiar with the pattern in the book. When I read it, I have them count the objects with me, and also repeat the object after me: "Dans ma salle de classe il y a 6 livres. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 livres". When I pulled small groups during these past few weeks, I practiced the classroom vocabulary with them using different games. Here is "bug in a rug": Then we started making up our own sentences to match the pattern in the book. I write "il y a", and then ask "combien?" and a student tells me a number. Then a second student tells me an object, and we read the whole sentence together as a class. After having done it together as a class a few times, I gave them their own mini white boards and they drew the sentences at the same time, using my whiteboard as a model. Then I sent them back to their desks and they wrote the sentences on their desks. After writing/drawing them, we took a minute and a few students shared their sentences with the class. Once we had practiced that for a few days and they had the hang of it, we added colours! When we do Daily 5 centres, they are playing different centre games to reinforce the vocabulary for classroom objects (Bang, matching, bug in a rug, dominoes, sentence making). Next week my students will be making their own versions of the books, showing me what they have learned with numbers and classroom objects vocabulary. If they are able to, they can also extend it to add colours! Note: If their desks have dirt/food/residue on them, then the dry erase markers will leave some colour on the desks. I use a spray bottle with dish soap and water, spray and let it sit for a minute. It will wipe right off with paper towel!

We have been working hard on our fall vocabulary for a few weeks. It's so fun to hear them say the fall words with so much confidence now! We practiced a venn diagram together as a class to compare "fall" and "winter" as part of our seasonal changes unit. Then my students tried it independently on mini whiteboards. They shared their ideas and sentences with a partner each time, before erasing and adding new ideas. I've now also increased the challenge with our fall centres. When they finish the matching centre, they read through all of them and come up with sentences with their small group. When they play "bang", they can now only keep the card if they can say the words in French AND use it in a sentence. When we do "turn and talk" at the carpet with a partner, they use a variety of fall sentence starters to make up sentences with their partner. We started our "En automne, je..." books on Thursday and worked on them a bit Friday as well. Next week they will present them to me as an assessment!
This week I read my grade 1s AND 2s my new mini books! With the change in curriculum, there is some overlap with my 1s and 2s, and I have some grade 2s who are reading at this level too. I then turned them into videos with the shadow puppet app and have uploaded them onto my website, so my students can read them at home too! I upload the video to youtube, and then embed it into my weebly website so my students don't need to go to youtube to watch it. This coming week, we will be making up the student versions of the books. My students will then have a book to take home that they can practice using the audio from my website! The really neat thing is that I can do this ALL (even embed the file to weebly) in about 5 minutes on my ipad. My classes LOVE getting to make them together and then are (hopefully) more motivated to go home and practice, knowing that they helped to make the video.
