I like to keep my students guessing about they'll be doing in class each day. And, one of my favorite twists is to let my students use food as a manipulative. In particular, I like to have my students use gummy bears to create scenes that represent various topics. It may seem a little odd, but my students (even my too cool for just about anything Seniors) love this change of pace. Here are some different ways I've used gummy bears in my classes. 1. Civics - As a introduction to different types of political systems, my Seniors used the gummy bears to illustrate a type of government. 2. World History - My freshman used the gummy bears to review the different types of government systems in Ancient Rome (Republic, Dictator, Triumvirate, Emperor) 3. U.S. History - My 10th graders in American 1 filmed their gummy bears acting out either Shay's Rebellion or the Whiskey Rebellion. To do these activities you'll need to buy or have parents donate gummy bears, plastic bags, and paper plates. These activities do take some prep work: - Figure out how many gummy bears each student or group will need and buy the necessary number of bags. - Put the appropriate number of gummy bears in each bag. - Give each student or group a plastic bag and a paper plate. Lastly, you'll need to decide if you will let the students each their gummy bears once the activity is completed. I give my students the option to eat them when they are done and most of them do! Allereerst ook eens een compliment voor de staats tv: Nieuwsuur komt met goed stuk werk over de Nederlandse rol in Syrie! Vernietigende reportage In een vernietigende reportage legt Nieuwsuur haarscherp uit dat de Nederlandse regering van Mark Rutte terreurgroepen in Syrie heeft voorzien van voertuigen (pickup trucks en bestelbusjes), uniformen, communicatie-apparatuur, voedsel, camera's en meer. Rutte Bij de volgers van Blik op NOS-journaal zal dit alles niet tot verbazing leiden. Maar het feit dat Trouw en Nieuwsuur er nu groot over uitpakken is wel verrassend. Wat steekt daar achter? En de vraag is of Mark Rutte, nu bij een breed publiek bekend is dat hij een terroristenvrind is, ook dit schandaal gaat overleven? Van Dam In de reportage kwam vooral de naam van van Dam veelvuldig voor. Hij is een Nederlandse ambassadeur en via hem liepen veel van de Nederlandse geld- en goederenstromen richting de terreurgroepen. Hij kwam ook aan het woord maar wilde niet zeggen op basis waarvan groepen steun kregen. Dit is natuurlijk uitermate vreemd. Je steunt bepaalde groepen, maar je wilt, als volwassen man, niet zeggen waarom: "Daarvoor moet je bij de Minister zijn." Lekker werk heb je dan. Je bent heerlijk met geld aan het strooien, maar op het moment dat er licht op schijnt, weet je, als een betrapt jongetje, plotseling helemaal niets meer. Ook niet meer waarom je dat geld en aan wie je het aan het strooien bent. Meelijwekkend eigenlijk. De Nederlandse regering in één beeld van reeds 80 jaar geleden. We begrijpen nu ook waarom de BTW op groente en fruit omhoog moet. De Jabhat al Shabiya strijders hebben nieuwe Isuzu's en Toyota's nodig. Het is niet eens Hollands fabrikaat! Nederland steunt Jihadi's en de Japanse maakindustrie in één move! Wij complimenteren en feliciteren Mark Rutte al vast bij voorbaat met het overleven van dit schandaal. Voor Rutte, met dit nep-parlement, is dit slechts een klein rimpeltje. Mister Teflon zal er niet minder om slapen, en er niet één grijze haar van krijgen. Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky (1893-1930) was a poet, playwright, artist and actor. He cut a rather dashing, nay swashbuckling figure—with his shaved head and Crowleyan features—during the height of the Russian Revolution. He dressed like a dandy. He was hailed as the “artistic genius of the Revolution.” Performed poetry exhorting workers to rally to the cause. Produced plays that were considered the greatest of their day. And he created a series of agitprop posters—promoting news and political ideas—that became an art form launching a whole new approach to Soviet propaganda and graphic design. In the 1980s, I was fortunate enough to see an exhibition of Mayakovsky’s artwork at the the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh. The exhibition was dominated by his bright, colorful posters with their (often simplistic) political messages. These fragile yellowed sheets of paper had once been displayed in shop windows or distributed to the countryside to inspire the largely illiterate Russian populace. When he was a student in 1907, Mayakovsky claimed that he’d: Never cared for fiction. For me it was philosophy, Hegel, natural sciences, but first and foremost, Marxism.
