When the Focke Wulf Fw190 first became operational in the autumn of 1941 it gave its enemies a nasty shock. The new German fighter could out-run, out-climb and out-dive the Spitfire Mk V, the best machine the RAF then had available. The only aspect of combat performance in which the Spitfire had the edge was […]

The Story Behind the Print:In order to protect the vulnerable Messerschmitt Me-262 during takeoffs and landings, General Adolf Galland set to create an airfield protection squadron (Platzschutzstaffel) to provide necessary cover protection. The JV44 defense group was established and leveraged the FW 190 D-9 (Dora) - the long nosed variant of the mainstay "Butcher Bird".Sachsenberg would survive the war with over 100 victories across 520 sorties flown. Although he was wounded during an air battle against P-51 Mustang fighters, he was transferred to JG 7 to fly the new Messerschmitt Me-262 jet fighter. He was needed for top cover support by Adolf Galland and in April 1945, he joined JV44 to fly the new FW 190 D-9 (Dora) interceptor - the long nosed variant of the "Butcher Bird" mainstay (FW-190 D-9 Red 1 JV44). These high-performance interceptors from JV44 were painted with red undersides and white stripes in order to assist friendly anti-air defense from mistaken identity. The scripted markings on FW-190 D-9 Red 1 below the canopy state, "Verkaaft's mei Gwand I foahr in Himmel!" (Sell my clothes I'm going to heaven). This item is printed on demand and typically requires 2-3 days for printing prior to shipment. Appreciate the Art - Learn their Story - Feel the History

A gouache to remember with the Hawker Tempest Mk.V, flown by Frenchman Pierre Clostermann taking down a German Focke-Wulf Fw 190D fighter. It is shown here above Mont-Saint-Michel in France. The NV994 JF-E had the famous quote “Le Grand General” written on it, as a tribute to General Charles De Gaulle. Pierre Clostermann shot down 24 confirmed and probably another 9 opponents while in the service of the RAF.
