Cutthroat trout fish spearing decoy I built as a worker for competition. Worker decoys means it’s a simple carving- no scale texturing allowed, emphasis on clean craftsmanship and swim ability. I entered it at the world championships in Monroe, MI. It placed 1st in category. I also entered it at the Ohio fish decoy championships and it won 1st in category and Best of show. It was also entered at The Gathering in Perham, MN in a decorative category and placed 3rd among decoys with carved/textured details. This is a one of a kind carving, a step above my production workers. It can be a display piece or used as a decoy while spearing. It is carved from mahogany, has an epoxy clear. These beautiful fish are modeled after fish decoys that were created in New York and other Great Lakes states for ice fishing. It’s believed that Native Americans passed the tradition along to European settlers of North America. Fish decoys are one of the earliest forms of American folk art. Starting with a piece of corrugated cardboard, the kids draw a freshwater fish, choosing among the bass, trout, walleye, pike, or sunfish. This is a great introduction to a gridded drawing, and I share tips and resources for making the drawing step successful. Working with oil pastels, the kids learn how to blend and layer for a rich looking artwork. We cut out the fish and display them on a wooden base or as wall hangings with no wooden base. These fish are amazing both as individual artworks and together as a display! This project ties in with the 5th grade social studies curriculum at our school, which focuses on the Americas. It's also a good Earth Day project, as we work with recycled corrugated cardboard (all those Amazon boxes!) and the focus is on some of our planet's beautiful fish. Time Required: 90 minutes. Koi fish are a member of the carp family. They are very important in Chinese and Japanese cultures, and they are believed to bring good luck and prosperity. They are social, intelligent fish that can even be taught to do tricks. The male and female Koi represent the Yin and Yang. Made out of sustainably harvested balsa wood, these lightweight ornaments are hand-carved and then painted with non-toxic acrylic paint by a cooperative of skilled artisans on Isla Solentiname, Nicaragua. Approximate size: 5" x 2".

Worker yellow and black folk art pike fish decoy, commonly used for pike and sturgeon spearing in the midwest or as a highly collectible art that makes great decor.
