And a review, of sorts, to follow... Title: Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue Book Beginnings: "He'd never been asked to wear a suit to a job interview." Friday 56: "Jende sat up in his chair, clasped his hands on his lap, and began telling his story." Summary: Jende Jonga arrived in America in 2007 on a visitor's visa from Cameroon in West Africa. He struggles to make a living and to find a way to get a green card. His wife Neni is granted a student visa so she and their six-year-old join him in New York. When Jende gets a job, after wearing a suit to the interview, as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, an executive for Lehman's Brothers on Wall Street, life is definitely looking up for the couple. They are able to set aside some money, in addition to what they send home, so it seems like the American dream is within their grasp. But then two things happen. First, Lehman Brothers fails and the biggest recession to hit the US in fifty years starts, leaving many without jobs. Secondly, immigration officials contact Jende who feels compelled to tell a lie about why he should be allowed to stay in the US since his visa has expired. When Jende gets in the middle of the marital problems between his boss and his wife, he loses his job. The dream seems to evaporate over night. Review: I read Behold the Dreamers as a book club selection and because it was a highlighted book in my community. The story contains a very relevant theme in today's news: illegal immigration. Jende and his wife want a piece of the American dream where, if you work hard and save, it is possible to make something of yourself. But even as things start going wrong for them, they can't help but compare their experiences in the US with those they left behind in Cameroon. They told the immigration judge that they had to stay in the US because Neni's father would kill Jende if they returned, but this story was not true. It was just a made-up story by their lawyer. As I read this part, I had to reflect on the reasons that so many people are trying to get into the USA today, even though immigration folks are locking them up the moment they get here. I've heard that many feel that their life was in danger in their own country. Yet, one never really knows if it is true or if they just want to be part of the American dream. No one deserves to be treated poorly when they enter the USA, but certainly we can do better at making the process a true legal process that has path toward citizenship. Sigh. The book helped me think through many ideas around immigration and what really makes a place "home." Interestingly, the author, Imbolo Mbue, is from Limbe, Cameroon herself, but now lives in New York City and has become an American citizen. It would be interesting to hear her own story of immigration to this country. I listened to the audiobook for Behold the Dreamer read by Prentice Onayemi, who was able to do the accent to sound authentic. (SOTH Book Club selection for August 2019)

In this post, you'll find some quick, creative ideas to help you make your first chapter Fridays series a success. Whether you're new to First Chapter Friday or just looking for some fresh, inspirational ideas you can use to engage your students during First Chapter Friday, this post will help.
Motivating students to read is one of the hardest but most fulfilling roles of a teacher. I absolutely love that moment when a reluctant reader finds a book of interest. But how can you make that happen? Enter First Chapter Fridays. This concept is one of my favorite ways to introduce students to new and diverse books. What are First Chapter Fridays? Each Friday you will set aside a few minutes to read the first chapter of a book. That's it! But why? To spark interest in the book. Your students will begging you to read more and are more likely to pick the book up and read it themselves. To build community. Shared reading is community building--especially if you choose relevant, purposeful novels. Assessment. You will immediately see what books your students are interested in. This will help when you need to make recommendations and when choosing books for class-wide studies. Fun! We can all use a fun Friday activity. This is one your students will look forward to AND it's educational. How to Choose the Right Books Choosing the right books is CRUCIAL for First Chapter Fridays to be more than just a fun activity. If you want to really motivate your students, you must be purposeful with your choices. Choose relevant texts. The books you choose should speak to your students in some way. Do they need to connect with a certain character? Is there a social issue in your school you need to address? Are you studying a time period in Social Studies you can connect? Etc. Choose books that are AVAILABLE. It serves no purpose to excite your students about a book they can't access. How frustrating would that be for them? Make sure the book is at least available in your school library. But wait, I'm teaching virtually! How can I make this work? Virtual teaching makes everything more complicated. But that doesn't mean it's any less effective! First consider how you can present this to your students. If you have scheduled live meetings (via zoom, google meet, etc.) you can simply set aside time for this on Fridays. Consider making this a big, fun deal! Invite students to grab a snack, stuffed animal, etc. while you read. If you prerecord videos for your students, you can prerecord a special video for this as well! Last spring I used loom.com for FREE to record videos for my class. It was extremely user friendly! Next, consider how to get books into the hands of your students. Just like in the classroom, you wouldn't want to choose a book your students can't access. These are some of my favorite ways to access books remotely. I highly HIGHLY highly recommend contacting your local library. Many libraries can help you get library cards for your students. They will then have access to free apps and resources. I can't recommend this enough! My favorite apps through my local library are: Libby (my personal favorite) hoopla RBdigital These other resources I've personally used and love: Epic (An amazing selection of books and a fun interface.) Vooks (This one is especially great for younger students. It is subscription based, but I've had free or reduced access to them through the pandemic. Always check for deals for teachers!) Project Gutenberg (The first provider of free electronic books. These are all classics, but don't let that scare you! It's great to mix some of these into your library. Think Peter Pan, Anne of Green Gables, and the Secret Garden--still beloved!) Amazon through Kindle (Look for free books here!) Finally, these resources have not been personally used by me. I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching and the wonderful Amanda from Teaching Maddeness to share some highlights of my week. I apologize for being so MIA this week! I am missing all these great link ups during the week because well, life, has been getting in the way! Falling asleep on the couch every night while trying to get my schoolwork done is getting O.L.D.!! I can't wait to have a break from daily planning and grading (then, I can have more time for blogging! lol). My little girl turned SIX on Wednesday! We were thrilled because her checkup after her tonsil/adenoid surgery was the morning of her birthday and she was cleared to go back to school! Daddy brought her into school with her birthday treat and all her friends ran up to her and gave her lots of hugs and love. I wish I could have been there:( She had her family birthday party on Sunday. Her friend birthday party is tomorrow at a Little Diva Day Spa for girls ages 3-12. She is having seven little girlfriends join her for a couple hours of pampering fun with a fairy theme!! Here she is at the Memorial Day parade with her favorite present from Grandma (crutches for her doll!). My little buddy, Charlie, loved the parade and firetrucks too:) Wednesday was "K day" for "KITE DAY!" Our students are LOVING the ABC countdown calendar that I read about here at the amazing Amanda and Stacia's blog, Collaboration Cuties. It was the perfect day to fly a kite with a great breeze and some cloudy skies. I lost count of how many students told me that this was their first time EVER flying a kite! A student from my homeroom and ELA class won 2nd place in an essay contest for the county!! The American Legion sponsors an essay contest on the topic, "What the American Flag Means to Me." There were over 1,100 entries and representatives from the Legion made a special trip to our school to present our winner with his prize of $75 in front of his classmates! I videotaped the presentation as well as the student reading his essay to the entire 4th grade. I will give a copy of the video to his parents. Proud student moment right here! I FINALLY had my walkthrough observation on Thursday!! We had a formal observation back in the fall and the walkthrough is new this year. Good news? It's over and I have that weight lifted off my shoulders! Bad news? I now have to write a formal lesson plan and have all my artifacts ready for Monday. We have to keep 24 artifacts throughout the year (needed 12 at formal observation and 12 more after walkthrough) to address domains one and four of the Danielson Rubric evaluation system for teachers. They also cannot be just ANY artifacts. The artifacts must be one of the three "recommended artifacts" from our negotiated rubric. So, my principal walked in right before ELA was about to begin and we worked on our Book Clubs!! I think it went well (I hope!) and I had created these forms that the students already had. I will blog more about how Book Clubs went and the forms I created after the students finish their final meetings (June 11th). One thing is for sure about my book clubs...the learning is DEFINITELY student centered! Today we took the students on one of my favorite field trips! The 4th grade classes toured Chautauqua Institution (founded in 1874). This is the only one of the "Grand Hotels" with wood frames that have survived from the 1800's. This is a picture of the amphitheater where a bustle of activity takes place all day every day throughout the summer!! Although I still have three weeks of school left, I can't help but notice that many of my BBB's are on summer vacay! Bananagrams is a fun word game that will keep your child engaged. It helps build your child's thinking ability and vocabulary skills. To play, players must collect tiles face-down. When the timer starts, create words in the form of a crossword. If you have extra or unwanted tiles, you can swap them. The first player to complete their word grid wins! Bananagrams is a great way to have fun together as a family.
If you don't have this book, it's time to get it! This is a GREAT book to integrate math and language arts. We have been working with it this week. This is the story of a greedy snake who hunts mice for dinner. He counts and collects them in a jar. In the end, the mice trick the snake and escape. Here are some of our activities to go with the book. Click on each activity to grab your own copy. Here is a poem we put in our Poem and Song books. We highlighted rhyming words. Here's an activity for counting sets and number words. Our first word search of the year to practice number words. If anyone remembers the magazine, Copycat, that went out of publication a couple of years ago. I was sooo disappointed. One issue had a cute little unit on Mouse Count and Mouse Paint. I'm thinking since it is out of print I can share this activity. Students create the snake. Hot glue a clothespin to the back of the snake's mouth. Students color and cut out ten mice. Give students a large ziploc bag for a jar. While teacher reads story have the students act out using the props. Have students retell the story on their own using props. When finished with book, I have students take props home and retell the story to their parents for homework. We create our own little book.
