I've done a lot of reading about habits that lead to wealth and success. Without a doubt, the number-one recommendation is to become proactive. Here's how.

This project will walk you through how to guide your students through the process of writing a monologue about something in their life and getting to perform it. Where it falls in the Year: I generally do this at the end of the year for a final project. I would recommend doing this project mid to end of the year. Make sure that your students fully understand what a monologue is before they attempt this assignment. You want them to have seen/heard examples of monologues before they begin this assignment. Length of Unit: This is completely up to you. You can make this a quick assignment or a longer assignment. With my end goal (public performance) it normally lasts 4 weeks. UPDATE: I presented this at a conference I attended and I attached the packet I used at the conference. This does include examples of student work for reference.

Photo Source: Finally in First Fractions can often be a difficult concept for students to grasp. Jenn over at Finally in First was finding that her kiddos needed a little reinforcment working with fourths/quarters and so she created this fun pizza fraction craftivity. Activity Prep Jenn prepared a brown crust cutout and yellow cheese cutout, as well as 1 1/2" x 12" strips of red, green, black, and light brown paper for each student. Completing the Activity Photo Source: Finally in First First, Jenn invited her students to cut out and assemble the crust and cheese. Next, she demonstrated how to cut the toppings from the strips of construction paper. [NOTE: In her FREE activity packet, Jenn details how she cut each of the toppings as well as how she describes the process for her kiddos!] Then, once the pizzas are fully assembled and dried, Jenn has her students cut their pizza into four equal pieces and paste them onto a piece on construction paper. Finally, they complete the writing prompt... "My pizza is divided into ___________ (fourths) which are also called ___________ (quarters)." ...and, once completed, the prompt paper is glued to the craft! [NOTE: The prompt paper is included in the FREE activity packet!] We think this is a great way to help reinforce some of those tricky concepts! To grab a copy of this great math craftivity freebie, be sure to visit Finally in First!

I love spending the final weeks of school working on projects with my students! While we complete a variety of projects throughout the year, my students become project-making machines after testing!! Sometimes, we're using project-based learning and other times, we're just doing projects. Here's a project based learning ideas checklist to help clarify.
I had heard “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” recommended by many homeschool friends before finally adding it to our read-aloud list. As soon as we dove deep into the first fairy tale within the story, I became enchanted. We took this book with us in the car, to the park, on hikes and brought it out at bedtime! Although I love nothing more than creating magical book guides, I had remembered that Karen Wright, a fellow homeschooling mom that admire, had recently led her children and their homeschool friends through the story, documenting their adventures. This past Winter, our family was privileged to test this guide out for ourselves and it was such a gift to our family. I have nudged Karen to share this guide with other homeschoolers for a couple of years, because I truly believe that this story is healing and because I know that Karen’s ideas can be such a blessing to busy homeschool parents! We are so pleased that Karen is allowing Hearth Magic to host the selling of this guide- we feel truly honored that she is trusting us to share her work with others. We hope that you are enchanted by the magical combination that is found in this guide: the storytelling gifts of Grace Lin and the creativity of Karen Wright. Happy Reading! This beautifully made book guide includes: 55 pages with: Tips on how to have an engaging and effective book club Crafts and learning activities that can be used as extensions to the book (long term project ideas, like studying silk worms) Ideas for how to bring the story to life as you read it (Silk painting and calligraphy activities that coordinate with the story) Delicious, kid-friendly Chinese recipes Themed planning pages for your lessons and meals
Last summer I attended a GT training and was introduced to choice boards! I LOVE THIS IDEA!!! I think that students are more engaged and even challenge themselves more when they are given choices. The great thing is....they aren't just for GT students. Choice boards work similar to tic-tac-toe; the student completes 3 activities in a row {up, down, diagonal} They can be adapted for ALL students and actually lend themselves well to differentiated instruction. On Tuesday, I will be attending another GT training specifically on choice boards and differentiated instruction {I'm super pumped about it!} I can't wait to learn more about these learning tools! {I promise to share what I learn!} Choice boards can be set up in many different ways. You can base them off of abilities, learning styles, intelligences, and even levels of questioning. I have found it easier, if I focus on just one of these types. When creating the board, you want to plan out what type of activity each square will focus on. {You don't want to have 2 of the same type of activities in a row} The goal of the CBs are to have equally acceptable activities that you want the students to complete that are similar end products, but have varying ways to accomplish the final product. {For example, you are studying the Alamo. Students could choose activities from writing a diary from the viewpoint of being in the battle, recreating a model of the Alamo, creating a movie, etc.}The wonderful thing about CBs though...students can choose an activity they are willing to complete {taking into consideration their own likes/learning style/intelligence}, but they will have 2 other activities they will need to complete that will focus on other skills that they possibly may need to strengthen {but at the very least they're practicing other skills}! It's a win-win situation! I recently put the choice boards I created for my homework reader's responses in my shop. My students are required to read 20 min nightly, however I found that many of them weren't really reading every night! These choice boards give student's different options to respond to their books, while focusing on varying skills. I've also included 4 blank {editable} choice boards so that you can create your own boards! .....And I used the adorable sneakers clipart to jazz them up from KPM Doodles {love her stuff!} Here is an example template of how to begin creating a choice board based on Multiple Intelligences: Source: Dare to Differentiate Here are some great resources: Dare to Differentiate (AWESOME site for resources!) This level commences with lessons in 'aqeedah about the implications of imitating others. It also includes a discussion about the signs of Allah (swt) which provide proof of His Oneness. In this grade, learners will recite the 28th Juz' and memorize Soorat Al-Qiyaamah and Soorat Al-Muddaththir. The Seerah lessons deal with the Hijrah and the life of 'Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab (ra). Students will learn about wiping over the socks and other materials such as bandages and plasters. The most significant aspects of Jumu'ah Salah, the status of Zakah, and the adhkaar said before going to sleep and upon awakening are discussed as well. The final lessons in this book cover the significance of good friends and the danger of bad ones. The material is presented, using a spiral approach, where students revisit each area and study it in greater depth each year. The Student's Textbook contains the subject text of the lessons, exercises as well as activities. The ICO project is a distinguished one because: Our curricula meet the needs of the target audience for integrated, coherent, and appropriate curricula. The end of the year is a great time for students to look back and reflect on things they have learned throughout the year. At the end of this year, I put together this simple project to use as a culminating activity for our studies of California and U.S. History!! This year I had 4/5 split class, and this project was very easy to adjust for each grade level. In social studies, my 4th graders studied California History and my 5th graders studies U.S. History. So, their assignment was to research different California and U.S. symbols and monuments. To prep, I enlarged and copied this iPad template onto 11x17 paper. {I had to trim 12x18 construction paper, and mess around with our copy machine, just a bit!!}. Download Here: POWERPOINT PDF I also copied three app pages for each student... Download Here: POWERPOINT PDF To begin the project, I provided my students with a list of California and American symbols and landmarks to choose from. Throughout the week, they researched each one and wrote a short paragraph to summarize. They edited and revised their paragraphs, and then copied each of them onto the apps. {I had to remind them to stay in the lines, since they would be cutting them out!!} After all of their paragraphs were copied, they cut them out and folded them in half. On the outside, they illustrated their symbols and included a title. {Again, they needed reminders to draw their pictures in the right direction, so that the app would flip up, not down, when glued!!} Finally, they arranged and glued each of their apps onto their iPads. They loved this project!! My kids love anything technology, they learned so much through their research, and they were so proud of how they turned out in the end!! While this worked great for my 4th and 5th graders as a culminating project in social studies, it could really be used for just about anything.... Reading Strategies Parts of Speech Text Features Geometric Figures Book Summaries (of different books read throughout the year) Short Biographies Biomes/Habitats Rocks and Minerals Solar System/Planets The possibilities are endless!!!
