This is the fourth part of the Seasons Resources. LINK:https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Seasons-Theme-Resources-for-Elementary-ESL-1744981 It is also available here: https://www.bilingualmarketplace.com/products/seasons-unit-for-elementary-esl?variant=37168505684132 Start with the trees flashcards. Place each Season Flashcard on the board and have the students name them. Then, have the students sort the trees into each season. Have them notice how they change with each season. Teacher: What season is this ? Students: It’s Winter! Teacher: look at the tree. What happened with the leaves? Students: There are no leaves! And again the worksheet to sort the trees. Cut the trees from the worksheet and make a small craft. I cut the toilet paper tubes into smaller rolls. Then, cut two slits on each one and place the tree. Ask questions: Teacher: What season is this ? Students: It's Winter. Teacher: Dos the tree have leaves ? Students: No, it doesn't. Introduce the Nature vocabulary using the flashcards. Then, have the students sort them into each Season. Teacher: What is this ? Students: It’s a polar bear. Teacher: What season do you see a polar bear ? Students: In the Winter! And another worksheet to sort the nature vocabulary. Roll ,read and write (Spelling game). I saw this game on the mailbox.com. I gave it a twist. Distribute a die and the templates to each group. Hand in the nature cards template and the die template. Explain that each number represented on the die stands for the number of letters in a word. In each group, the students take turns to roll the die and choose a card from the template that has the corresponding number of letters that is on the die rolled. The student has to make a check mark on that word. The student reads the card to the group and they have to write the word under the corresponding column. Each word can be written only once. Watch the videos on how to play. This is an old game that I used to play 20 years ago. Yes, a very old game!! The aim is to review prepositions. I prepared a set of instructions for each team and some cutouts. Make 2 groups. When you say, "Go!" the students must read the slips of paper and get the necessary cutouts to complete the task. The first group who puts the proper number of things in the correct location wins. Here are the four trees that the four groups should end up with. I made a blank template for you to write the instructions or even better, the students can write the instructions for themselves or for another group to accomplish. The cutouts can be used to sort them into Seasons using the McDonalds french fres container. And there is still one last part for the Seasons Unit: Seasons and Verbs. Follow me! Please leave your comments.
Finish: 18k White Gold Beads: Teal Cheshire Glass Bead Size: 8mm Cord: Clear Elastic Cord Size: 7.8" Circumference Base: .925 Sterling Silver The .925 sterling silver Cheshire Glass bracelets are hand-crafted from 6mm Cheshire Glass beads hand-strung on a clear, stretchable elastic cord. The Cheshire Glass bracelets are available in a selection of hypnotic and colorful beads and a white gold finished sterling silver finished centerpiece and a matching logo charm. With their stretchable clear elastic cord, the bracelets are one-size-fits-most. Inspired by the otherworldly and fantastic character in Lewis Carrolls Alice in Wonderland, our Cheshire glass whimsically recreates his ubiquitous stripes with a cats eye effect that is nothing short of magical. Designed in genuine glass the bracelets exude a stunning Chatoyancy as bands of light are reflected from a series of thin inclusions parallel to each other. As the light moves, or the observers eye line moves, this magical line appears to move too, then disappears all together, just like the Cheshire cats pupils as he mischievously floats about. Experience the Cheshire effect, we guarantee it will leave you grinning.

Use a real calendar to show the day and months of the year. The calendar helps understand numbers up to 31. Have the students identify the days of the week in the calendar and how many days in each month . Introduce the days of the week using the cards. Hand in the cards in random order to seven students that will come to the front. They have to arrange themselves in order. Ask questions. Teacher: What day is it ? Student: It’s Monday! Teacher: Tuesday, come to the front. Show your card. Teacher: Ursula,What is your favorite day of the week ? Ursula: It’s Wednesday. (the students with the card shows it to the class). I made cards to help ordering the days of the week. There are also abbreviation cards. The students order the days of the week and match the correct abbreviation. Introduce the Months of the Year using the cards. You can also use them for the Birthday unit. Game: Go to Month. Stick the cards on the wall in a random order. Bring a group of students to the middle of the room. Teacher: January! The students go to the January card and touch it and says the word. Continue with all the other months of the year, or days of the week. Here the abbreviations cards for the months. I resarched and there are two ways to abbreviate June and July. I placed both just in case. use the cards to order the months and match the abbreviations. Continue with the ordinals numbers. There are the numbers and the word cards. Students should learn the ordinal numbers for telling dates. Explain that the ordinal numbers are used to express order. Use the cards to play a game connecting the ordinal number and the written form . Question and answer cards. Prepare the question cards in one colored paper and the answer cards which are the days and months in other colored paper. Activity 1-You can place the question cards in a bag or facedown in a pile on your desk. Draw a question card and read it to the class. Have the children answer orally or write the answer on their notebooks. Activity 2- Divide the class into groups . Tell the class that you are thinking of a word , day or month. Star giving some clues. Teacher: the first letter is J and the last letter is Y. The students look through the cards and guess the word. The first team to say : JULY, is the winner of a point. Continue with more words. Also use the ordinal numbers cards to order the days and the month such as, 1st day of school is Monday, the first month is January. Explain how to write the date by writing the number of the month (8), followed by a slash and the number of the day 8/25. Write the date on the board every class. I made days of the week crowns for Preschool students, but I guess they might work well for older students. You can use them to help them line up in order as a warm up game. If you just want the crowns, get them here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Days-of-The-Week-Crowns-1722398 Pocket charts: I find them useful to review the calendar the whole school year. This post is going to seem a little choppy and all over the place, because that's pretty much how my time at school has been lately! The past two weeks I have only been at work on Monday and Tuesday of each week because of my little health scare. So, I'm going to show you the little that I got accomplished with my kiddos in the time that I did have with them! Last week we were comparing fiction/nonfiction stories using Frog and Toad Are Friends and nonfiction stories about frogs. My kids absolutely LOVED Frog and Toad! We made these cute little frogs and toads from Mrs. H that you can find {HERE}. The plan was to do some other fun and cute activities, but that just didn't happen! Sometimes, you just have to let things go :) Moving on to this week... We have been working on Plot Structure (Beginning, Middle, and End) while reading books by Kevin Henkes. I found this cute Wemberly craft {HERE} and I paired it with an activity from The Teacher Wife's Reading Comprehension Unit. This activity was actually completed with the sub there, so it's always interesting to see how things get put together :) I went up to the school one afternoon to get cleaned up and organized for my next few days off so I decided to go ahead and hang these up! We have been using our ELA spirals ALOT lately. After reading, "Julius, Baby of the World" we made this cute little BME booklet from the Teacher Wife, glued that into our spiral, and illustrated underneath! After Reading Lily's Big Day (which can be viewed online HERE), I gave each student 3 notecards. We glued those into our ELA spiral and wrote the BME of the story. Super simple and easy! In Science, my kids were learning about dental health/hygiene. So, my teaching partner had them make these little cuties that you can find {HERE} in English or Spanish! And, coming this weekend... I am *so* close to being finished with this unit, and I really LOVE it this far! I want to add a few more activities and then I'll be posting it to TpT! Hopefully I'll be back at work on Monday, refreshed and renewed to have some really great ideas!

WOW! To say I am a bad blogger would be quite the understatement. I have been TERRIBLE. And yes, I'm going to use the same ol' excuse I always do... I've been SO busy. You all understand. Between teaching, my husbands coaching schedule and a toddler, my poor blog has been put on the back burner. I really love blogging and reading other teaching blogs. I especially like *scrapbooking* the activities I do in my room. I will continue to blog, hopefully more frequently. So, over the past few weeks we have learned and done a LOT!!! Sadly, I haven't snapped pictures of everything, but here are a few recaps. Recap 1: Verbs A verb is a word, is an action word...If you can do it, then do it, you know it is a verb! Such a catchy song. I introduced verbs using BrainPop Jr. with a little bit of Annie and Moby. Who doesn't love them?!? Then with my students giving me verbs, I made this anchor chart. After singing, dancing and recording verbs for several days my students recorded and illustrated their own verbs. We started with simple I am... statements. *exercising* just adorable!!! Recap #2 Heart Maps (An idea from a dear friend of mine) After talking about nouns (before verbs) we talked about people, places and things we love. Together during writers workshop we created 3 heart maps. Things we love. People we love. Places we love. After making 3 class heart maps it was time for my kiddos to make their own. I wanted them to choose their favorite people, places and things and record them on their own heart maps. They keep them in their writers toolkits along with their journals, blends chart and spell checks with common sight words on them. I always tell my students to write from the heart because they tend to write more creative stories if it is about something they have experienced. Recap #3 Adjectives After verbs and nouns came adjectives. I introduced adjectives using this anchor chart. Using these clue words really seemed to my kiddos when thinking about describing words. Throughout the week were also happened to be learning about bats. Since our theme was bats, I decided to have my kiddos describe bats using one word. An adjective. We also completed a can.have.are chart to review nouns, verbs and adjectives while sticking with the bat theme. Then we made our little cuties using the template from Cara Carroll over at The First Grade Parade. Recap #4 Punctuation anchor charts. Recap #5 Seasons Introduced seasons using this anchor charts as well as a few seasonal books. Then we made these fun little craftivities. They traced their hand up to their elbow on brown paper. Then depending on what season they chose they used either fall or spring leaves, snow, or apples. (Sadly I didn't get pictures of the other 2 seasons) Recap #6 Pumpkins Pumpkin madness started October 1st! I absolutely love fall!! Everything about it. Our first field trip of the year was this past week... the pumpkin patch. Leading up to our trip we were knee deep in pumpkins. This little craftivity was inspired by Cara Carroll over at The First Grade Parade. We read the story The Fantastic Pumpkin and then retold the story using this little graphic organizer. Throughout the week we also learned the life cycle of a pumpkin so that we could be pumpkin experts when we got to the pumpkin patch. We wrote and illustrated each stage of the life cycle on this fun little graphic organizer. (It came from a teammate of mine... not sure where she found it.) Then we painted paper plates to look like pumpkins and attached the life cycle pictures in order on the vine (yarn). They loved it! Recap #7 Fact Families We started off the unit with addition and subtraction and part, part whole. We used paper plates with the food separates, dice, counters and dominoes all week making addition and subtraction problems with corresponding number sentences. After learning addition and subtraction, then I introduced fact families. We got the dominoes out again started making fact families. We got our 2 numbers from the domino, added them up to get our whole and then created our fact families. My trick for teaching fact families is the story of the "family". Daddy, Mommy and baby. And no one can live in the house that is not part of the family. To go along with our October activities we made these Frankenstein fact families. (I found this Frankenstein recording sheet on Pinterest... For the life of me I can't find the original site. I did NOT create this. I can not take credit for it. If I come across it...I will post it) Recap #8 Skip Counting All of this that I caught on camera is the anchor charts... minus 5. :( Recap #9 Parts of a Plant We just touched on this very briefly. We will hit this topic again in the spring time. We simply talked about each of the parts of a plant and what job they did to help the plant survive. They drew, labeled and described each part. Recap #10 Spiders Our theme last week was SPIDERS!!! Boy do first graders love spiders!! We started with a KWL chart with what they know and want to know. Some of mine already knew spiders were arachnids?!? Awww man! I love it when they find that out. Spoiler! We read, recorded and journaled about spiders all week. Then at the end of the week we record our 4 favorite spider fun facts and created our spiders. WHEW!!! That was a lot! I am going to *try* and blog more often so that I don't have to just do classroom recaps! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Another Ten Pinky Linky with Ashley from Just Reed. This week's theme is Writing. Now let's get right to it. I just love this linky party!!! I just love this. I think it provides a great visual for the little guys, using terminology that (most of them) understand. Source: What the Teacher Wants Acrostic poems are so much fun and when I saw this version, I knew I had to pin it so I could remember to do it one day. Source: That Artist Woman I love creative writing and I think these story sticks are such a great idea for students to randomly pick out the character, setting, problem, and one random thing that must be included in the story. I love reading what they come up with. Source: Sarcasm 101 I am definitely going to put this in a sub-tub and have it in my sub plans to have the sub do this if the kids didn't know I was going to be out. I think it would also be a great idea to carry around with you if you are a sub. Source: Teaching in Alabama Tpt Store Such a neat idea to provide a real life visual for the little guys. By using toys that they're familiar with and connecting them to the various steps in the writing process, such as Mr. Potato Head for adding detail. Source: Andrea Knight's Tpt Store A fun way to keep the kids writing throughout the summer. Source: Brassy Apple I have loved this writing center since the first time I saw it. As some of you may have seen I really like the portable center idea by using the tri-fold boards. Source: A Cupcake for the Teacher I've seen seasonal words before for writing like in the form of a word wall or folder, but I really like this idea. Bookmark size (roughly) cards, laminated, and on a ring. Portable, easy to store, and flip through. Source: Fantastic First Grade Froggies These "What Can I Write About" posters are so bright and include pictures, especially appropriate for the little guys. Source: Teaching with Love and Laughter I never thought of this idea until I saw this post, what a fantastic idea. I know I get tired of writing the same thing over and over and over again on student's papers. Source: I Love My Classroom If you're not already following me on Pinterest check out my boards, I have over 2,000 pins & some great ideas!!! I can't wait to see what writing ideas you've found.
