I went around and asked the students each individual question- did you notice that one of my froglets said "kids" don't need food??? Wow! was their an uproar!!! We read this book and then I called children up and they pointed to something and asked the other froglets if it was alive or not. I try to make boring items, a little less boring. So Instead of just making two lists, I had them outline something alive and something not. After the K-1 and I read the book, we sorted these in the pocket chart.

I added tongs if they want to use them. Works fine motor :) Trace, trace, (write) and erase here $ I like when things rhyme lol so we leave out the write part lol We chant "trace, trace, and erase" These ice cube trays are from Dollar Tree (old so not $1.25 lol) The number cube is those foam cubes and I added the Pips or dots. These have only numbers 1-3. Roll the cube. Add that many poms to the tray, when it is all full, they roll and take them out and when empty, roll and fill. No ending lol

I stored them but they were bent :( I am trying to straighten them out... I will update you next week on how they ended up. loving the spiders! I am a veteran teacher- like over 20+ years. These are life changing. I read the book about an area or the tool and then we practice. I have signs up all over the room that says Pip Certified. I write their names on the sheet with a dry erase marker. They also get a badge. I attach it with making tape and they wear it :) Read more about Pip the Pup here. I printed off the Pip catalog and cut them apart. Here are the books that I use during the first week of school. Let's Play is about dramatic play. Let's Read is about the library. Let's Build is about the blocks area. I split my class in half and another teacher teaches blocks and I teach about the library. Read about that here. Some I read during our group time, and other books are read during our social-emotional lessons too. The very first small group lesson is on dry-erase markers. We trace our names with them daily, so I have to use it the very first week. Lessons: *Pencil we literally read the book and use the pencil correctly. *Let's draw markers drawing and capping markers. *Connecting Cubes- we explore and then I give them some sort of mat to build with them.** *Let's Color- all about crayons so we use our brand new crayons. *Pattern Blocks~ we explore and then use mats to play on.** **These are also the very first things we have in our morning bins. *Mini counters- I use mini erasers and name printables to spell their names. For the cutting fun- it's about scissor skills. We practice cutting 1 inch paper strips. Then we attach those pieces to a body outline. For rainbow write, we read the book and then we practice on scrap paper. Here are my sand writing trays. The trays are from Target and held lacers. The sand came from Dollar Tree. Johnny Appleseed day is Sept 26th I use several books during our Social Emotional lessons. I also use her Tom and Tabby lessons. Find them here$ I will write more about those lessons soon :) October is fire safety month. Coming back to school in January is usually pretty difficult. Several choices here for re-freshing procedures. February brings the groundhogs, dental health, and Valentine's Day. The 100th and 101st days of school usually fall in this month as well. Spring starts, St Patty's day I usually do a small weather unit Earth Day is April 22nd, I usually do a garden theme in my science area. I wait all year to introduce glue bottles and glue sticks. We use glue sponges for the year. We do alphabet books $ in small groups- one of the pages we do watercoloring :) These could also guide your small groups :) More ideas for small groups. Shapes- I read one page per day along with our number board. Read more about that HERE. Why did I do this? We made our spider schematic chart. Our new learning came from Gail Gibbons Spiders: *There were 30,000 different kinds. *They lived 30,000 million years ago- even before the dinos! *Their official name is arachnid. I use Deanna Jump's Spider Unit as a starting point. I also used her Spider Bite from her Simple Science Vol. 1 At the end, we graphed who likes spiders and who doesn't. I got these spider webs from Kmart years ago when they were on clearance! I had every student write their names on a spider and we taped them to the webs. On the top half of the paper they drew a spider. On the bottom half, I taught them to draw a spider web. I taught K-5- most of them didn't know how to make one! So I had a brilliant idea for the 4th and 5th graders- instead of just drawing the parts of the web, all they started with was the " t and x"and for the other parts, they had to write facts. I think it turned out fab-u-lous!!!! So did the students! I often struggle with finding so many awesome ideas and with such a limited time (15 mins.) I can't get everything in. So I had a "lightbulb" moment. I had different groups do different things! I made this chart: Then the students created this: We discussed how spiders eat their prey. Each child used: Web (paper plate) Proboscis (straw) Insect (sugar cube) Venom (water) Never use more water than we can clean up! This one actually looked like a spider!! Here is our venom: We graphed who liked spiders and who did not. Here is a close up. I had each child write their name on a spider. I truly don't like spiders, but always pick to teach about them!

I love paper plate activities in the preschool classroom for multiple reasons: they are cheap, you can get them for tons of themes, they are so versatile, and they can be used across multiple subjects! I have rounded up my favorite paper plate activities and can't wait to share them with you. I grabbed most of these plates from Target, Walmart, or Dollar Tree.
I saw a pin on Pinterest, so I have been busy making them to share. Included is the spinner and recording sheet. Directions: Using a paper clip and pencil or brad in the middle, the child will spin and then write down the letter that they got on the recording sheet.
